Black History Month: The African-American Civil Rights Movement

From 1954 - 1968 the United States faced an essential event in its history called the African-American civil rights movement which occured to have equal rights for the african americans. When these events occurred there were leaders chosen for the african americans. A voice that spoke out in favor for them, and not only was there one but there was two. There names were Martin Luther King Jr (MLK) and Malcolm X.

Many people believe that racism finished or disappeared after the Civil Rights Movement in 1960 but its signs are seen in the society around us even nowadays. Even though people have fought so much for the equality of the races it seems like the white supremacy always finds a way to show itself and suppress the wanted equality in one way or another. But going back in time, remembering one of the most important movements in the history of the US and of the world which has been the African-American Civil Rights Movement, whose leader was Martin Luther King Jr. “Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

Throughout history, civil rights have been a persistent issue, as far back as enslavement in the First Civilizations, such as Mesopotamia. With the issues however, a great many people have stood up for the rights of themselves and others. None of these people have been more prominent than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King was the person who most impacted civil right because of the sheer number of people he captivated, as well as his calls for change being carried out in a nonviolent manner. Not many people have the power of persuasion, and even fewer possess it to the degree held by Dr. King. "

The leadership style of Martin Luther King Jr. earned him to be recognized as the face of the Civil Rights movement. Therefore, Malcolm X should have changed his leadership style to work with Martin Luther King Jr. because his way of fighting for civil rights was strategically thought out and ultimately effective. Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights movement. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Reverend Martin Luther King Sr. and Alberta Williams King. Martin Luther King Jr. came from a line of pastors in his family, and from the beginning, he was on his way to becoming one himself (Martin Luther King Jr.).

Black history month is a yearly commemoration dedicated to the accomplishments made by African Americans. As an African American female, I am persistently faced with discrimination, stereotyping and sexism. I am aware that the racism and discrimination we face today is not nearly as atrocious as what my ancestors experienced, but it is still exceedingly difficult being black in America. I give thanks to the great deal of African Americans before my time who fought for our freedom. There are countless blacks who inspire and motivate me everyday.

MLK Changes the World "The time is always right to do what's right" Martin Luther King Jr followed this advice as he was fighting for equal rights for African Americans around the world. Martin Luther King Jr positively benefitted modern society by writing a speech and changing the viewpoint on how people think about African American and using nonviolent disobedience to change his rights. Martin Luther King Jr has significantly benefitted modern society by changing the viewpoints on African Americans make them more equal to whites. In the month of April 1963 Martin Luther King Jr was arrested for conducting a civil rights march. This year’s observance of Black History Month has caused controversy for excluding non African-American blacks. With this year’s increased racial progress, it is time for all blacks to be included in this celebration. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's most recent statistics, there are around 4 million Caribbean-Americans and an estimated 1.9 million African immigrants in the US. Very little of their history is mentioned and president Obama even deemed the celebration “African-American Month.”

Martin Luther King Jr., a minister and social activist, led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. He was an advocate for equality between all races and a civil and economic rights Activist. Because of his leadership, bravery and sacrifice to make the world a better place, Martin Luther King was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize. His incredible public speaking skills and ability to properly get his message across can clearly be scene throughout the speech. Martin Luther King Jr is the most iconic civil rights leader in history. If anyone is unsure of his significance, they could simply take a trip to Washington, D.C to view his magnificent monument. Dr. King in the 1950s and 1960s, led protests and spoke on numerous occasions about injustice and segregation within the African American community. Although he had many Anti- Racism protest, his most legendary took place in Birmingham, Alabama. While in Birmingham, Dr. King was arrested which led to him writing a detailed letter to the city clerk.

Years later, President Ford extended the week into an entire month. It began as an infrastructure to help eradicate the neglection of African American history; nonetheless, over the years, there has been much debate concerning the annual celebration. Although Black History Month has received backlash from both African Americans and Caucasians, it is still a necessity in today’s life because it provides historical information that the youth cannot find in textbooks and recognizes neglected people who have fulfilled great actions. Historically, African American history has been deemed as an unimportant subject.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil right activist who fought for the right and equality of African American citizens. In his speech, he stressed that nonviolence was a more effective way to success. One of the rhetorical devices that was key was his persona. His persona showed his followers that with patience and persistence change will come. In his speech, King spoke about the march in Birmingham, Alabama, where he and his friend Bull Connor lead.

Black History Month highlights the accomplishments and contributions of African Americans throughout history. The Multicultural Student Center reflected that goal. In a Feb. 16 event called Past and Present Heroes, MSC honored African Americans from the 1800s to present day. It was a timeline that attendees walked through, with posters displayed on the walls and videos about historic African American figures.

Martin Luther King Jr. helped us realize that segregation and poverty are wrong. He also helped us realize that we should treat people the same. No matter race, color, or gender. He has impacted our everyday lives with the Civil Rights Act and his “I Have a Dream…” speech. He is an important man with an important history.
