When I first started researching Fisher vs. Texas, I believed discrimination in college applications was very wrong and unlawful. I believed everyone should have a fair opportunity to go to the school of their choice. As I researched the issue more, it became apparent to me that diversity is truly important to our learning experiences while in college. In college, diversity has taught me many different viewpoints and has helped me understand different cultures. The learning aspect is important but I also believe that students that come from poorer communities and challenging childhoods should have an opportunity to attend top universities.

Thompson illustrated what kind of world we would live in if work were to diminish. This world included excessive amounts of dominating robots, contentious politics, and leisure time. For the past couple of years people have said that robots will take over and dominate humans. This has always been a myth, or rather a topic that is brushed off of the shoulders. However, this fantasy is quickly becoming a reality due to current trends in technology.

Chris McCandless was in his early 20’s, he was the kind of that guy that wanted to learn and experience life without all of the material things. He wanted to be independent from his parents and friends so Chris did something that would be insane for most of us humans but to him, it wasn’t. He went into the wild of Alaska for months, in fact, McCandless even thought he could make it out alive at the end of his journey. As a matter of fact, he was known as being a risk taker and enjoyed being out and about in the nature side of the world. Many would believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild to purposely kill himself; however, I myself believe that McCandless did not do it purposely.

With the year-round pressure pertaining to college applications on high school seniors follows the impending decision of choosing an appropriate college major. Generally, the decision-making process involves prioritizing one field of interest over another, however, due to globalization and constant innovation in technology determining a college major has increasingly become the modern day equivalent of the metaphorical line between life and death. Even so, the obvious choice would be the prestigious STEM fields over liberal arts due to the instant job opportunities which are seemingly ludicrous to a recent graduate. Society’s values influence people to construct their personal mores around them, and those who do not are not accepted by society. In our society, those who have well-paying careers are valued above those who do not. So when McCandless decided against following the path society expects him to, his parents were upset. “Chris informed his parents that he had no intention of going to college. When Walt and Billie suggested that he needed a college degree to attain a fulfilling career, Chris answered that careers were demeaning ‘twentieth-century inventions,’ more of a liability than an asset, and that he would do fine without one, thank you” (114).

Patrick lin makes the reader think and analyze the possible outcome of the robotic industry. In “Better than Human”, Kelly mentions that it will be a trend for robots to replace humans on most, or even every working position in the near future as a outcome of the development of automaton-related technology. “We need to let robots take over”, Kelly assures, “they will do jobs we have been doing, and do them much better than we can (Kelly 311)”. With his observation of the invention of Baxter, he is persuaded in a great extent that humans will acquire new jobs as their old jobs get replaced by automatons. This newly invented robot surprisingly contains several epochal features, disregarding its extremely low price compared to its predecessors. With its benefits, Baxter can be promoted easily and applied to many industries, decreasing the costs of production and even re-generating the market eventually.

Throughout history, the human has always envisioned living a lifestyle where chores were considered as a part of the past. With the development of humanoids and androids robots in the 1950’s, chores were really becoming part of the past. Therefore, because robots were able to adapt and meet the needs and wants of humans. As a result, we started to see an increase in both the use and production of robots in factories and households. In the article “The Robot Invasion” the author Charlie Gills, is really able to convey the relevance and effectiveness of a robot through the use of the tone, purpose, and credibility.

Isaac Asimov’s Reason, shows us how the field of robotics is still a working-progress, Philip K. Dick’s Second Variety introduces the idea of superior, conscious machines who were created by advanced technology, and Kenneth Chang’s “Can Robots Become Conscious?” shares different views on the advancement of machines and robots. I believe machines and robots are not glorified adding-up machines and I think it is possible that they will become capable of original thought the more we advance in the field of robotics. Similar to the iPhone updates, new technology and new studies could lead to intelligent, conscious machines. Technology has come a long way, with the introduction of the Siri of the iPhone, Window 10 2-in-1 computers, flying military drones, and many more.

In order to achieve this future, I believe we need to be aware not only of what we’re up against but also how to work with what we’ve been afforded. As a society and as a government we should embrace automation and support its continual evolution while finding the best way for humanity to flourish as a result.
