With the year-round pressure pertaining to college applications on high school seniors follows the impending decision of choosing an appropriate college major. Generally, the decision-making process involves prioritizing one field of interest over another, however, due to globalization and constant innovation in technology determining a college major has increasingly become the modern day equivalent of the metaphorical line between life and death. Even so, the obvious choice would be the prestigious STEM fields over liberal arts due to the instant job opportunities which are seemingly ludicrous to a recent graduate. A key feature being the creative abilities taught to liberal art students which is due to the wide variety of liberal art courses teaching and enhancing observational, critical and problem-solving skills a liberal arts degree is not only deemed practical but also beneficial. “Liberal-arts colleges are now engaging with the ‘digital humanities’ Simply put, that means we are producing history and music majors who are as good at working with technology as they are at developing research projects and performing on stage” (Pannapacker, 2013). The subjects taught in the arts and history section of liberal arts programs across the universities in America revolve around the importance of culture and an ethical understanding of how the world works. This not only helps in self-development but also in the growing job industry where an understanding of ethics and communication plays an equally important role as the skills involving the job.
