The mid 1800s began what is now known as the Industrial Revolution. Business and cities boomed with life as thins seemed to be improving in life. But were they really changing for the better? The bright side of the Industrialization is shown, yet the dark side isn't. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of urbanization, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were little to no education, poor and/or unsafe working conditions, and pollution. Children working in factories had no time for school or to learn. Elizabeth Bentley of document seven had answered the question, “What time did you begin work at the factory?” (Document 7)with“When …show more content…
The image of the industrial plant is how most of those dangerous factories looked like while running (Document 3). Large, menacing building were the places of employment for many common folk. Inside, they housed the precarious machines that employees would work on for hours upon hours. These machines moved quickly and mistakes could not be afforded in these conditions. Lewis Hine's popular photo shows children working on dangerous machines with their hair, pants, and shirts tucked away for safety (Document 8). Fingers, hands, hair, and various other body parts could be lost or injured on the job with the factories' dangerous conditions. Safety precautions were a necessity if you wanted a chance of staying uninjured in these scenes. This lead to the masses realizing how unsafe factory work was, yet there was no other job available to work. Ms. Bentley from a previous document not only had worked since she was six, but she was also crippled from her job (Document 7). Her fast work took its toll on her legs at the age of thirteen and she is now in a poorhouse for she cannot work anymore. Events like these were common and expected from the work in most factories. Factories were not only dangerous to the people inside, but the people outside and the environment as
The age range of the women workers were from age fifteen to age twenty-four and very few male workers worked in this factory. The reasoning for these women workers to work long, hard hours helped them by “sending brothers to high school, to art school, to dental college, to engineering courses” (p. 96). Most of the work was as simple as “cutting threads, which can be done by an unpracticed girl of fourteen” (p. 44). Despite the harsh conditions of this factory, they only paid their workers six dollars a week and extra money could be made if they worked the whole week. These workers would hunch over hefty and risky sewing machines that only worked by foot pedaling.
Factory Working Working in the 1800’s was hard and was very dangerous, by the mid 1800’s America was using machines to produce most things such as clothing, shoes, watches, , guns, and farming machines. The workers would work an average of 11.4 hours a day. The workers were very tired. The factories were very rugged and dangerous, there were fast rapidly moving parts exposed and that cuased many accidents with adults and children.
Everyone knows about the industrial revolution and how it had a significant impact on the world, but the question is, was it positive or negative? So many things happened during the industrial era that led to our world now, that’s why this essay is going to be talking about the specific impact that industrial revolution had on the world. Industrialization has changed the world for better for several reasons: firstly, it has improved children’s working conditions by creating new laws, secondly, new machinery made quicker production of resources, and thirdly, created clean living conditions for people. The opposition may argue that industrialization was awful because of how people suffered. However, industrialisation had more advantages than
Industrialization had a massive toll on America and Europe. Industrialization is the period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agrarian society into an industrial one, involving the extensive re-organization of an economy for the purpose of manufacturing. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because there were many job opportunities, although it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were that the children were forced to work so they could help out their families, air and water pollution, and horrible working/living conditions.
Environmental damage, exploitation of workers, and overpopulation in cities are all negative effects of American Industrialization. American Industrialization had many effects come out of it, both positive effects and negative effects. The positive effects of Industrialization are that it made work cheaper, employed thousands of workers, and improved people’s daily lives.
History has seen many changes throughout its history. Two of these were the Industrial Revolution and New Imperialism, which both heavily impacted the modern world. The changes brought about the modern world some positive than negative situations. During the imperial there were situation that help build the modern world and things that didn’t quit work such ads working on their feet for hours and not taking a break, worker her beaten, however there were positive such as growth in cities and created faster transportation, and created resourceful invention car and or plan. There were positive and negative effect on the new modern world which help create the new government and society.
While some may argue that the Industrial Revolution had a primarily positive effect on society because of the job increase and large advancements in technology, it actually had more of a negative effect. Some of the negative effects of industrialization
Including, child labor and how they worked for next to nothing, and had no education. The Industrial Revolution had a negative impact because of the disgusting living conditions, poor working conditions, and abusive child labor. First, the living conditions in slum areas are poor, not maintained, and underfunded by the factory
While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because there were many new job opportunities , it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were little or no education, over competition for jobs and child labor laws weren’t enforced. First of all I would like to start off by pointing out that “In the Picture of “an Urban Tenement” you can see that there are kids around the house which is kind of implying that there not in school learning but instead you see them at home with women who which we can imply are their mothers”(document 6).
Although the United States of America has progressed because of this revolution, it also affected many people in the most negative way possible. These three reasons have affected families’ ancestors for centuries, and America. While considering there were many helpful, positive effects to industrialization, sadly, in the end, the negative reasons out-weighs the positive. With that, while some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of the advancements in technology, it was actually a negative thing for society.
The Industrial Revolution had many positive and negative effects of how the people felt and did with the Great depression happening in the early 1900’s. Many of the positives were because of the big booms in large cities with supply and demand. There was a huge boom in Pittsburgh due to the large steel production. There were negative effects because of all of the low working wages, the economy dropping, and the desperate needs of everyone needing money. Other negative effects were also horrible conditions in factories, really low pay, unfair working hours and some of the workers were kids between the ages of 10-16.
Before industrialism life moved slowly and there was little change. However, during the early 1800s, things started to change quickly. New businesses formed and there were new inventions. Also, The period of rapid industrial growth during the 1800s and into the early 1900s was more harmful because there is poor health care, unsafe working conditions, and lots of pollution. Working conditions were bad result of industrialism.
The industrial revolution had a lot of positives as well as negatives. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative consequences for society because the long work hours but, it was actually a positive thing for society. Industrialization’s positive effects were that it actually created jobs, and creations of machines made easier for people to work. Having long work hours is fun for no one.
The workers were often subjected to sweltering heat in the summer and frigid conditions in the winter. But, that was not it, at the time there were no laws in place that required businesses to ensure their employees' safety, and this regularly lead to many injuries and fatalities in the workplace on a daily basis. There was not a single work place that did not have injured or mutilated employees, and this was due to the unsafe working conditions of the factories, “Let a man so much as scrape his finger pushing a truck in the pickle-rooms, and he might have a sore that would put him out of the world; all the joints in his fingers might be eaten by the acid, one by one… There were men who worked in the cooking rooms… in these rooms the germs of tuberculosis might live for two years, but the supply was renewed every hour.” (109).
Child labor during the 18th and 19th century did not only rapidly develop an industrial revolution, but it also created a situation of difficulty and abuse by depriving children of edjucation, good physical health, and the proper emotional wellness and stability. In the late 1700 's and early 1800 's, power-driven machines replaced hand labor for making most manufactured items. Many of America 's factories needed a numerous amount of workers for a cheap salary. Because of this, the amount of child laborers have been growing rapidly over the early 1800s.
