The industrial revolution began in the 18th century. Industrialization marked a shift to powered, multi-purpose machinery, factories and mass production of many goods. Many more people were aloud jobs that weren’t available prior to this period in time. However, the industrial revolution brought along many negative circumstances: pollution, child labor, and unequal pay. The overseer tells me that he never had a girl get along better than I do … I have a very good boarding place, have enough to eat … The girls are all kind and obliging … I think that the factory is the best place for me and if any girl wants employment, I advise them to come to Lowell” (Document 1) Girls are paid much less than men when they work at factories and employers believe that they are less skilled than men. Unequal pay was a huge factor back in the industrial revolution; Employers chose to have young children work for them because labor was cheaper. Child labor was a big issue involved with the Industrial Revolution. Families in the lower classes had jobs working the machines in factories. Usually, each worker got payed about $4-5 a week. Document 1 is a conversation that took place and it was kind of like a job interview and William Cooper, the worker, described how harsh life was in the factories. He began to work in factories when he was about ten years old and he worked from 5 am to 9pm.

With the increase in industrialization and technology, life expectancy and quality of life are expected to go up. The Industrial Revolution shaped the growing economy at the time in many positive and negative aspects. The Industrial Revolution took place during the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s and was considered to be the “New Industrial.” Many things were brought to the economy at the time due to this occurring; some in which being machinery, technology, production of goods, and even performance. The economy was not the only thing greatly affected by this revolution but the farmers, the working-class, and the middle-class were also affected to a deep extent.
Many parents needed their wages to make ends meet. In Document C from The Spirit of Youth and the City Streets by Jane Adams 1909, Jane states how children enter factory life when the law allows them to, and children end up not having childhoods. She writes that people are so caught up with the marvelous achievements of their industry and end up forgetting the children who have to work to help out as well. In Document G, a court case Hammer v. Dagenhart 1918, the father of two sons one under fourteen years old and another one between fourteen and sixteen explains his concern about the exploitation of his children in a cotton mill. He says its concerning that children are allowed to work more than eight hours a day and six days a week.
The Industrial Revolution, lasting from the late 1700s until the early 1900s, was possibly one of the greatest time periods in this world’s history. The first example that shows it was positive is that the children were happy and had never been beaten in work. According to the 3rd document it says “They seemed to always be cheerful and alert” this tells me that it was positive because the children never got beat and they were always happy and cheerful to be at work which could cause better work ethic. Another positive thing is that in the village they were given more places to stay and they were fed and clothed.
