Human Resources Sergeant in the Profession of Arms Commanding General, General Martin Dempsey asked a central question that frames the major challenges the Army’s leaders’ face. He asked, “How do we create the specific conditions for, and achieve those key attributes that ensure that the Army is a profession – one in which all Army professionals recommit to a culture of service and the responsibilities and behaviors of our profession as articulated in the Army Ethic?”. As Professional Soldiers, we exhibit traits that reflect that of what it means to be a Profession of Arms. It wasn’t until post-Vietnam when the Noncommissioned Officer Corps was truly recognized as professionals. Throughout the years with post-wars, the traits of being a professional has exhibited more so in today’s operating forces after nine years of war. As a Human Resources Sergeant, we are looked at by all aspects of a professional as well as how we perform in our profession. The importance of our role is vital to ensuring Soldiers, Civilians and their families are paid, housed, fed, physically and mentally fit during wartime as well as peacetime. We do this all behind the curtain and without hesitation because our job is to ensure our warfighters and operators don’t have to worry about anything except their mission. The United States Army is a profession that is built on trust. All military personnel, both Civilian and Soldiers, are tasked upholding the military professionalism of the Army. Professions develop members in their organizations over years in order to cultivate their expertise. A profession’s ethic shapes the values of the organization. These principals are the beliefs and rules the profession abides.
A Profession of Arms is an experience a person can’t truly understand if they never served in any type of militarize organization. Those who served must understand the culture, the history and they always have a reason why they volunteered. They must follow a certain code of conduct and discipline which often make them look or behave differently among others. I joined the Army for the transformation and to do something different comparing the friends that I grew up with. When I graduated from Basic and AIT my friends noticed the changes that occurred in my life when I returned home.
The areas covered by the AG Corps are identified in its common core (man the force to the morale and welfare of the profession of Arms. The AG Corps’ effectiveness lies on its fully competent HR professionals. The vast variety of roles, missions, and responsibilities demands for fully capable HR Sergeants. They must be resilient and able to adapt to the always changing environment of the Profession of Arms. The HR Sergeants must become experts on their fields in order to be able to advise their command when needed and to provide assistance to any service member to include their Families when necessary.
When it comes to the profession of arms, the human resources sergeant plays a very important role. One expects a profession to produce experts in the field and the profession of arms is no exception. The HR Sergeant is in many ways the blood to keep the person alive. The Human Resource Sergeant keeps everything flowing straight for the rest of the Soldiers so the mission continues with focus. The army has its own Professional Culture and refers to it as a system where all Soldiers share the same meaning.
Many seem to over emphasize the many privileges gained as an officer and seem to completely overlook the ever more important duties that should be the true motivators. I must ensure to maintain this mindset. I must also remember to put “people first”. (Department of Defense, 1988) This will be a cornerstone in every decision I make.
Many service members have dedicated majority of their lives to the military service. The transition back into the civilian population can be in itself, overwhelming. Veterans transitioning me be unprepared when searching for employment. The military structure is a disciplined and unyielding environment with a relatively clear salary structure and authority chain of command. Being accustomed to a military work environment diminishes veterans’ job preparedness in unexpected ways.
There is no doubt that military service can and will alter the mental stability of service members. While they are away, servicemen know nothing other than how to ill and survive. This transition in behavioral qualities undoubtedly leaves a lasting influence on the individuals when they are finally brought out of the warzone and into civilized society. Having been so habituated with violence and chaos, returning home to normal civilian life imposes a sense of alienation on the soldiers. They feel as if they cannot fit in with the rest of society, as they do not know how to live like normal human beings; it is impossible for the average everyday person to relate to anything that soldiers had gone through serving their term at war.

The Human Resource Sergeant A Human Resource Sergeant first and foremost is a Soldier. Soldiers have an obligation to uphold the Profession of Arms. The Army defines itself as a Profession of Arms because it serves and provides protection of the Constitution by lethal force sought by the American public (Dempsey, 2010). A Human Resource Sergeant in the Army provides the administrative support that affects Soldiers’ overall welfare and well-being, while assisting leaders with keeping Soldiers combat-ready and effective (Guard, 2017). In order for a Human Resource Sergeant to be a professional in their military occupational specialty they must live by the Army core values especially integrity and selfless service.
After assuming this position, I began to implement systems and ideas that would motivate an entire platoon to give their best effort. I quickly came to understand the role and responsibilities of this position. I was responsible for all matters related to the safety, welfare of Soldiers,
