The professional culture helps shape the Soldier into the individual that they are destined to be. Also, the professional culture creates an atmosphere that enables Soldiers to become accustomed to their professional identity within the workplace as well as in their community. As a Human Resource Sergeant, the professional culture that we establish within the S1/G1 shop sets the tone for how we operate on a daily basis. The Army Values and Warrior Ethos is the base that we stand on as a foundation for what we hold true to. The Human Resource Sergeant’s role in the Army profession is to provide administrative support, provide command guidance, and assist with the Army Command programs. The HR Sergeant can balance multiple tasks and identify the strength and weaknesses within their unit's metrics. Secondly, as an HR profession, the individual must be able to be trusted to the handling of sensitive information such as personal and medical background to include personally identifiable information. Thirdly, the HR Sergeant's role is to provide excellent customer service to the Soldiers within their command. A Commander sustains an ethical command climate in war by establishing clear intent and purpose for their organization, accentuated through his vision. The Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and the Law of War are the military guidelines and penalties for soldiers to act accordingly. Distinctively, the majority of people know the difference between right and wrong. Command team (i.e. Commander and NCOs) are role models for the organization and set the example for their subordinates, which led to sustaining an ethical climate. Many seem to over emphasize the many privileges gained as an officer and seem to completely overlook the ever more important duties that should be the true motivators. I must ensure to maintain this mindset. I must also remember to put “people first”. (Department of Defense, 1988) This will be a cornerstone in every decision I make.
When a squad leader listens and shows interest in soldiers’ performance, they are likely to appreciate and put effort in their work. Accountability saves time and finances. When soldiers in an organization are answerable and responsible for their actions, utilization of time and funds is adequately spent in among others, identifying solutions towards a challenge as opposed to trying to determine the problem. In this situation, accountability means that every soldier conducts their roles competently, and if a problem occurs, they raise it up instead of keeping quiet and letting it eventually create a bigger consequence. In conclusion, the building of accountability in an organization is crucial.

Among these five characteristics; military expertise, honorable service, trust, esprit de corps, and stewardship of the profession, I believe that military expertise and stewardship of the profession are the two characteristics that make a leader excel in the presence of their peers. ADRP 1 defines military expertise as, “Military expertise is the design, generation, support, and ethical application of land power, primarily in unified land operations, and all supporting capabilities essential to accomplish the mission in defense of the American people”. In order to gain trust from your subordinates for them to follow your guidance, a leader must have military expertise. Without being an expert in your field, subordinates will not trust your guidance provided unto them. The Human Resource Sergeant A Human Resource Sergeant first and foremost is a Soldier. Soldiers have an obligation to uphold the Profession of Arms. The Army defines itself as a Profession of Arms because it serves and provides protection of the Constitution by lethal force sought by the American public (Dempsey, 2010). A Human Resource Sergeant in the Army provides the administrative support that affects Soldiers’ overall welfare and well-being, while assisting leaders with keeping Soldiers combat-ready and effective (Guard, 2017). In order for a Human Resource Sergeant to be a professional in their military occupational specialty they must live by the Army core values especially integrity and selfless service.
Many things make the US Army a successful organization. In effort to describe what makes the Army successful one might see discipline, trust, honor, comradery, voluntary, trained, professionalism, or a plethora of other terms equated to that of a US Soldier. One thing that stands out as unique about the US Army is its distinct roles throughout the ranks. A military officer is held to a much higher standard and conducts him or herself as dignified and professional as possible.
