STRESS, SELF-DETERMINATION AND MOTIVATION TO WORK:
HOW PERSONALITY TRAITS AND STRESS AFFECTS SELF-DETERMINATION AND MOTIVATION TO WORK
MARIE CECILIA SANTOS
ABSTRACT:
Motivation is the force that naturally drives people to act. This can be motivation coming from external factors such as grades, reputation, parent’s opinions and the like. On the other hand, it can also be motivation coming from within. These may be principles, interests and values. Also, rewards and feedback play a role in an individual’s motivation. Opportunities for self-direction such as the recognition of feelings and choices are said to create a greater feeling of autonomy or self-determination. It has been found that in students, they tend to have greater intrinsic motivation

It may come from within, such as from people’s curiosity, interests, abiding values or care. On the other hand, it may also come from external factors such as grades, rewards, opinions, and the like. Individuals who are intrinsically motivated have high chances of being able to sustain their creativity and their passion for anything that they are doing, and being able to sustain their effort in doing a task. Effort in doing a task will lead to performance and performance will lead to rewards (Vroom, 1964). These rewards that they will get may be intrinsic or extrinsic, and may be either positive or negative. The more positive the reward is, the more that the individual will be highly motivated. Conversely, the more negative the reward is, the less likely the individual will be motivated (Vroom, 1964). Also, Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan suggested in their self-determination theory that events and experiences that give a person a feeling of autonomy, relatedness and competence lead to high motivation and engagement in activities. Self-determination theory suggests that the main factors that affect and determine the level of an individual’s self-determination is the environment. It also suggests that people have the tendency to desire and work towards achieving growth, having mastery of ambient challenges and being able to use new experiences to improve self. In this paper, I discussed my proposed theory
Intrinsic motivation refers to performing an activity for it own sake and the joy received from it. Extrinsic motivation refers to performing an activity for some external reward, such as money or food. Between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation, there are five levels of motivation, differing by their level of self-determination. First is amotivation, in which an athlete has no extrinsic or intrinsic reasons for continuing their sport or activity. Next, external regulation refers to an athlete performing an activity to fulfil an external demand or for an external reward, such as a paycheck.
People are intrinsically motivated when they find the activity itself enjoyable, interesting, or personally rewarding. The motivation to participate in the activity comes from within, driven by a sense of a desire for personal growth. All three factors from RSA (2010) were intrinsic. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is driven by external factors or incentives that are separate from the activity itself.
The depth and complexity of the human drive is something that has been studied by scholars for a long time. What makes us do what we do? What makes people get up every morning? What makes people work through pain, through trials? Motivation, as defined by Webster, is “a force of influence that causes someone to do something”.
The concept of Motivation has many different factors that can define it. Because there are different factors, Motivation can mean a lot of different things. In this paper, I have conducted 5 interviews with people of different backgrounds and ages. No names will be used at their request but they all come from close friends or family. Only important background information will be referenced so accurate conclusions or assumptions can be made.
If people can’t do something, for sure they will tell you can’t do it too. And if you want something, go and get it. (Will Smith Movie Quotes That Will Motivate You Through Adversity, n.d.). Motivation can further divided into two subtypes which are intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the motivation that comes from inner side of one self and urges him in doing something no matter what is the external reward given.
My motivation is intrinsic because I hold myself to a high standard and I expect a lot of myself. The motivation is also extrinsic because I know my parents do as well and I don’t want to let them down. However, I learned long ago you have to want it for yourself no matter how bad someone else wants it for me if I don’t want it for myself odds are I won't stick with it. That’s why I've chosen this career path because this is all I want and I know that’s all the motivation I need to see me
INTRODUCTION Self-Determination Theory (SDT) was conceived by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan. This theory is concerned with human motivation, personality, and optimal functioning. For the purpose of SDT and work motivation, motivation is considered the core of biological, cognitive, and social regulation. Instead of just looking at the amount of motivation, self-determination theory focuses on different types of motivation.
Motivation at workplace There are two dimensions of motivation; internal and external. Internal motivation refers to personal interest in doing something and external motivation refers to be persuaded by someone’s activity. The characteristics of motives are identified as: individualistic, changing, may be unconscious, often inferred, and hierarchical (Reece, 2014). Most important fact to understand motivation is the theories. Many motivational theories have been developed over time to study human behavior at the workplace.
In fact, individual emotional and motivational aspects should be considered [17]. Motivation is defined as a desire to make an attempt in order to perform duties and responsibilities and to use individual skills [18]. Academic motivation refers to behaviors that lead to learning and improvement [19]. It includes the tendency to perform well and to spontaneously evaluate one's own performance. Experts have devided motivation into two main groups, namely intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.
You have been asked to plan a continuing educational (CEU) program for the RN staff at a not-for-profit community hospital. Schweitzer & Krassa (2010) discuss the roles of intrinsic versus extrinsic motivation in relation to nurses’ attending CEU offerings. Identify what extrinsic and intrinsic factors that might influence nurses’ participation in the educational program. Nurse educator needs adequate potentials and capacities through participation in the educational program. Nurses need to have the intention through CEU so that they can make well job.
Context Motivation is regarded to be an important tool that can be utilized in accomplishing a given task. However, lack of motivation could result in inability to accomplish the task of poor performance. In this regard, it is worth noting that there are various factors that contribute to lack of motivation among individuals. Additionally, while an individual can be motivated at other times, some circumstances can make him or her to lack motivation. This reminds me of the time when we were doing group work that I realized that most of my group members were not motivated to do the assignment.
introduction Motivation has been defined as some driving force within an individual by which they attempts to achieve some goal in order to fulfill some needs or expectations (Mullins, 1996). Beside Mullins, some scholar also define motivation as the psychological process that gives behavior purpose and direction (Kreitner, 1995) ; A predisposition to behave in a purposive manner to achieve specific unmet needs (Buford, Bedeian, and Linder, 1995); An internal drive to satisfy an unsatisfied need (Higgins, 1994); and the will to achieve (Bedeian, 1993); All those inner-striving conditions described as wishes, desires, drives, etc. (Donnelly, Gibson, and Ivancevich 1995); and the way urges, aspirations, drives and needs of human beings direct
However according K Ranga Krishnan, dean and professor at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, although some people may start out being motivated by external factors, their source of motivation could change to being intrinsic in nature, halfway through their journey for success. For instance, a child could first be motivated to do well in school, by fear of his or her parents, but while the child is studying, he or she could end up having an interest in the subject. The child’s motivations would then change to be individulistic in nature as he or she would want to learn more his or her own satisfaction. Therefore, although one may be inspired by external factors initially, they could shift to being self-motivated.
Intrinsic motivation being employees are interested on the work because it is personally interesting, rewarding, challenging. Job satisfaction and the achievement of your personal goals are some examples of intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation being employees work solely for the reason to receive a reward or the outcome. Extrinsic motivated employees are more concerned about the end results (pay raise, benefits, and promotions) than
