SCI411 Academic and personal development Portfolio: Part 1 From not being in education for a few years, being able to recognise my own academic skills, strengths and weaknesses was quite difficult. However, over these first couple of weeks in lectures my learning strengths and weaknesses have made themselves apparent. It’s very likely that you usually pay more attention to your shortcomings than your strong points. You customarily devote yourself to overcoming your limitations.” (Gallup, n.d., p. 5). This statement is very true; I am a very motivated individual, and I am always trying to better myself. I am a person that does not focus on my strengths, but on my weaknesses that I need to improve.
One of my strengths is in creativity. I am person who excels greatly when I am able to be creative and have freedom to think outside the box. However, that can also become a weakness because for assignments that are more limited and structured I to find to be challenging. Another strength I have is being able to learn quickly from my previous mistakes. There are times where I mess up or do something wrong, but my plan is to put those failures to good use.
In “Strengths Finder 2.0,” Tom Rath informs us that, “You cannot be anything you want to be- but you can be a lot more of who you already are” (Rath p9). I agree with him in the fact that we must focus on our strengths rather than trying to better our weaknesses in order to become successful. So many people today put their attention towards improving their weaknesses that they are surpass by others who focus on their strengths. After learning my own personal strengths, I have a better understanding of who I am and how to focus on these both in school and in the workforce.
As a student I have many Weaknesses however I also have strengths which can help me overcome my weaknesses. One of my weaknesses is time management I tend to waste time watching my favorite Tv shows or spend time on social media. Another weakness I have is I tend to loose focus and get bored. those are some weaknesses I have which make me a bad student. In order to overcome those weaknesses I have started being more organized than I ever was, I use things like calendars and planners to mark important dates so I wont forget.
These characteristics help define who we are and our individuality. Our strengths are often what we are known best for. These are the abilities of people to perform something, using much mental or physical effort (Cambridge Dictionary, 2022). On the other hand, our weaknesses are things we can improve on. My strengths and weaknesses have had a direct impact on my role as a future counselor and it is my job to use and improve my strengths and weaknesses to ensure that I am helping individuals as best as

After reviewing my Future Me letter, it was encouraging to see how much I grew in general. From my work in essays and responses and how I felt mentally from where I was when I wrote this letter. I have felt a growth in these past few months. I came into the semester unsure of my critical thinking and unable to get deeper into the subject feeling like I hit a wall with my chisel that is dull and unable to chip away the wall. After the feedback from Cynthia for my responses and essays, I have more confidence in skills as I convinced myself that I was a better storyteller than an essay writer.
