At its height, the Roman empire included much of Western Europe. Rome unified the region and spread classical ideas, the Latin language, and Christianity to the tribal peoples of Western Europe. The Germanic peoples who settled in Europe and conquered Rome would later build on these traditions. After the collapse of Rome (476), Western Europe entered a period of political, social, and economic decline. From about 500 to 1000, it was politically divided, rural, and largely cut off from advanced civilization in the Middle East, China, and India.
