Many labels were used to characterize the Middle Ages, however the best were The Dark Ages, The Age of Feudalism, and The Age of Faith. The Dark Ages accurately identifies the Middle Ages because of all the death, destruction, and plague throughout. The Middle Ages followed the decline of the Roman Empire, which causes very harsh times across Europe. Also this time period consists of the plague which virtually slaughters one-third of Europe.

Europe in Dark Age Before you say “Europe was never in a dark age.” think of the middle ages right after the fall of Rome, in The Crusades or The Black Death. These are just examples of why Europe was in a dark age. The phrase dark age means unsightly and dreadful, the term comes from Francesco Petrarch, he was an Italian scholar who compared Europe to Asia. The dark ages lasted 500 AD to 1500 AD.

The Middle ages was the period of time after the Roman Empire fell, and when the Europeans rebuilt themselves. The Middle ages, or Medieval Period, spanned from about years 500 to 1500. During this time, a new society began to appear. This new society had roots in the classical heritage of Rome, the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, and the customs of Germanic tribes. Many things were involved in the rebuilding of this society, such as religion, culture and most importantly, geographical location, government, and economics.

We call the middle ages the middle ages because they were in the middle. The middle ages is the period of 400-1401ad, but most people know them as the dark ages. The dark ages fall in between the middle of the renaissance and the reformation. Now let’s get one thing straight, the dark ages, are not actually dark.

Many people believe the world is a disaster right now. However, one of the worst times in history was the Middle Ages: learning was lost, most were struggling to survive, and law was almost obsolete. At this time, the people of Europe were horribly facing the effects of the Black Death, which was the worst pandemics in human history. The Catholic church began to have bad reputation as the priests did not help the people during the Black Death and angered people because of their wealth. After the High Middle Ages, there were many social and economic reasons that led to the decline of the Catholic Church in Western Europe. There were many social changes that had taken place in Europe that caused the Catholic Church to lose power and popularity.

The Middle Ages in Europe were characterized to be more of hope than despair. The scenes throughout the Middle Ages were horrific as Jewish people were attacked, the Black Plague was developed, Serfs had to endure much pain in order to gain freedom, the Hanseatic League was provoked by robbers, and the scene of the establishment of the Magna Carta was a risk since a king could become a dictator. Described scenes above about the Middle Ages surely leaves one to think the era was characterized by disparity, but not really! The scenes above created an outcome which gave hope for the majority of the people in Europe, the hit(s) from such horrific scenes proved to show a sign of hope as the end of the Middle Ages began the introduction of a Renaissance
