For the past 232 years, Americans have had the right to defend themselves against crime, tyranny, and victimization through the rights given to us by our founding fathers. If these rights were restricted or even taken away from Americans, the crime rate would soar, and the safety of the people and families of America would be put in jeopardy. If these rights were restricted, the generations to come would be brought into an environment of violence and crime. (Purpose Statement) While many think that gun control can fix the rate of gun homicides and crimes and mass shootings, it will most likely have the opposite effect and will restrict our right to defend ourselves.

Mass shootings have become a commonality for Americans, and we as a country have become used to the high death toll associated with these tragedies. Killers armed to the teeth seek a highly dense hunting ground to rake in as many kills during their bloodbath. Mass shootings are not uniquely an American problem, but they are uniquely common here. Federal bans, public safety campaigns, and state laws have attempted to attack the mass shooting dilemma. As shootings continue, the issue remains a prevalent debated topic in politics and leaving many dumbfounded on what course of action needs to be taken to save us from the plight we’re in.

TO: Dr. McConachie FROM: Jongsu Kim RE: GUN CONTROL DATE: 10/28/2015 I chose gun control for my policy advocate paper because I wanted to learn more about gun control issues that the United States is facing and perspectives from the president and the Congress who agree and disagree on gun control, since I was born in Korea, which barely has any gun-related issues due to the strict law against owning guns. In the United States, the gun control issues are a serious problem. There have been many gun violence incidents, such as shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, Umpqua Community College, and so on. As the gun violence has kept happening, some people want stronger regulations for selling and carrying guns.

Gun control is and will be beneficial to America’s security and safety. The US has been seen to be drastically more unsafe than other countries with stronger gun laws. “Gun violence is a crisis. 117,000 Americans are shot every year, a rate that outpaces our peer by order of magnitude” (Gun Laws Matter).

This is an important topic in America, this decides whether the citizens are in control of the government or if the government is in control of us. Gun control is the problem in the United States.

On December 15, 1791, the second amendment was officially ratified (“What is the second amendment and how is it defined?”). Nearly 240 years have passed since then and more than 200 Americans are shot and wounded every day, including more than 110 that are killed. (“Gun Violence in America”). Though these injuries and deaths are very significant, the effects of gun violence extend far beyond them and shape the millions of lives who have witnessed it or had a loved one killed from it. Many of these deaths and injuries stem from three major weak points in gun control.

Terrorism, public shootings, and suicides have sparked the fuse that is gun control. Our government has persistently tried to pass laws and regulations to restrict gun ownership, but not all have succeeded. Looking at the history

Some might argue that the US is one of the greatest countries in the world, but compared to others, it's one of the worst when it comes to gun control. It has become apparent that the gun control policies aren't as strict as they should be, as everyday in the US, an average of 36 people are killed at the hands of guns and more than 32,000 people are killed annually. Guns violence impacts society in many ways. Statistics show more people have been killed by guns than all the American wars since 1968 and it's estimated that 280 million people currently own a gun in the US. A country where 280 million people running around with firearms that cause fatal harm is incredibly alarming.

A weapon in the wrongs hands is the maximum danger humanity can face. Nowadays, violence and delinquency in society are viewed as the maximum problem solver. Humanity is full of chaos; hate and envy seize our souls. Guns are the ultimate security for some citizens but for others, these add to a feeling of defenselessness. Throughout history, any topic related to guns means a plethora of problems.

Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.

Since the Second Amendments’ ratification in 1791, Americans still debate with one another, because of its many controversy views. The amendment allows every citizen of the United States the right to own guns and to defend themselves when in danger. The problem arises when the laws being set are restricting people from their rights. There are so many gun control laws, varying from state to state. The development of arguments surrounding gun control correlates to the increased violence and altercations related to the use of fire weapons.

The use of and the owning of guns is a very hot and debated topic in society today. For many, this is a life and death debate due to the recent and numerous school shootings. These school shootings have caused an outcry for more gun control, specifically in relation to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Despite these calls, increased gun control is not the answer. Most gun owners’ use their guns responsibly and for good purposes.

Everyday in the United States, ninety families are changed forever; guns claim an average of ninety lives every day in the United States, 33,000 lives in a single year. Gun control has been a debate in the United States for many years and is constantly thrusted back into the public’s attention by horrific shootings. These shootings constantly cause individuals to petition the government to place stricter and stricter regulations of guns. However, these policies cannot be the solution to this problem. To determine a solution that will be both effective and constitutional, we must look at statistics and research that has been conducted to determine the best course of action.
