TO: Dr. McConachie FROM: Jongsu Kim RE: GUN CONTROL DATE: 10/28/2015 I chose gun control for my policy advocate paper because I wanted to learn more about gun control issues that the United States is facing and perspectives from the president and the Congress who agree and disagree on gun control, since I was born in Korea, which barely has any gun-related issues due to the strict law against owning guns. In the United States, the gun control issues are a serious problem. There have been many gun violence incidents, such as shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, Umpqua Community College, and so on. As the gun violence has kept happening, some people want stronger regulations for selling and carrying guns. However, some people are against gun control, arguing for self defense and the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Currently, not only people but also Congress and the president are working on gun control issues. In Congress, opinions about gun control are different depending on the political parties. Most Republicans usually vote against gun control laws. However, Senate Democrats recently unveiled plan for gun control reforms and planned to block other bills until their measures get a vote. Senate Democrats proposed to close background check loopholes, expand the background check database, and tighten regulations on …show more content…
Also, more money for the Justice Department will give more financial options to prevent illegal gun ownership. Consequently, the possible gun violence can be reduced. However, more severe punishment for illegal gun sales will not help much, because, according to American Journal of Economics and Sociology, “while such systems of control are necessary, a positive approach to motivating people toward desired ends tends to be much more effective than punishment” (Kwon, Scott, Safranski, and Bae
In America, the issue of gun control has become an extremely controversial topic. Ever since the formation of this great nation, guns have been key tools and restricting them any further would present incomprehensible consequences. Placing stricter gun laws on the current situation or banning assault weapons will not decrease the death or crime rate but in fact quite the opposite. The republican party believes that with fewer gun restrictions and revision of current standards, we can make America a safer place. The right to bear arms is a fundamental right of any American citizen and this right needs to be protected as the fundamental freedom it is.
The debate surrounding gun control and gun violence has been an ongoing controversy in many communities and America as a whole. As gun violence increase each year, views and opinions are rising, which not only have created tension in communities, but also has become a major debate in society. Although some critics argue that guns bring an overall negative impact to the country, others comment that guns are crucial to the beliefs and views of people today as well as important to their culture. In the context of today's society, many people in America are viewing gun control as an infringement of their rights and its threat towards their ability to protect, thus questioning: To what extent should gun use and possession should be controlled?
Cameron Coletta Mrs. Cummings English III A.P. 3 March, 2016 Gun Containment Policy There is much controversy over whether or not to make the owning of guns illegal. While some think that doing this would bring an end to monstrous events, previously taken place, many others believe that this law would make the country more dangerous. My claim that making guns illegal would bring more chaos to the country, causing underground transactions including weapons to take place, and criminals who plan to commit such horrible crimes will find a way to get gun even if it is made illegal, is supported by logical evidence. The claim that making guns illegal would make the country more dangerous, is supported by logical evidence.
Have you ever felt frightened and defenseless? You recognize, that feeling you get when you 're walking through a tough division of the town entirely and you realize that your phone just went bad and there 's no one around to hear you yell if something went on? Now imagine feeling that way everywhere you live, all of the time. This is the reality that we United States citizens would be living in if our government were to implement total gun control.
Implementing gun control policies in a nation with a large number of gun ownership is difficult because these policies are bound to be opposed by some citizens. Striking a balance between protecting the right of Americans to own guns and controlling gun ownership
It is estimated that billions of dollars are earned every year in the gun business through firearms, revolvers shotguns that are manufactured each year and the millions of jobs that the industry creates each year is very beneficial for the economy. What most people do not see, however, is the negative economic impact of guns and gun violence and what little has been done since the Brady Bill to change any of the circumstances. Webster et. al. (2002)
One of the most controversial issues our nation faces today is gun control laws. This controversy has been created due to the different interpretations of the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution which states the right of citizens to bear arms; “a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Cornell Law School). Anti-gun control laws believe that the amendment guarantees the right to bear any kind of firearms. On the other hand, we have does that believe that more controls laws should be implemented since the 2nd amendment was for the right of States to have an armed militia during wartime. Both sides have strong point, however, the safety of our children comes first, and a firearm means death in the wrong hands.
Strict regulations and limitations have been pursued already and clearly do not suffice. Statics brought to attention by gun control opponents, show that gun control laws have done little to reduce crime rates. Several restrictions have been made on certain guns, considered as overly dangerous, though in the hands of an unstable criminal even a legal hunting gun can be deadly. Countless restrictions have been made, however people have still found ways around them. If people are unstable and determined enough, they will find a gun, regardless of the restrictions or regulations.
By allowing citizens to bear arms, there have been thousands of deaths in the United States. On average, there are nearly twelve thousand gun homicides a year in the U.S. Following that, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that on an average day, ninety-three Americans die by guns. A simple solution to America 's unique gun dilemma would be sensible gun regulation. The Democratic party 's views are reasonable enough to grasp, although the proposition offends Republican citizens.
Within each of these issues there are those who want more gun control legislation and those who want less. More people are pushing to have more strict laws to protect us. but around every corner is a conflict or a situation that arise on the matter of how safe we really are if we had these rules and laws congress are trying to pass. Guns are not for everyone. Certain individuals cannot handle a firearm safely, and some individuals choose to use firearms inappropriately.
There is support and opposition to gun control. President Barack Obama would like to introduce laws that are newer and stricter for the owners of guns and those wishing to own guns. The faction of republicans that split from the others suggested that the frequent shootings spread their roots in laxer law enforcement environments, so the key is to be step up law enforcement. The government proposed to establish better limitations on guns, instead of banning them
26 Oct. 2015. This article talks about the supporters and non-supporters of gun control and what all of it could lead too. It talks about our Second Amendment rights and how the Democrats as well as The Republicans wanted to make it harder for the mentally ill to get firearms in their hands. They would increase the funding for the prosecutions and they would even get more strict on the control of gun trafficking. This article also states that The Democrats were very quick to blame The Republicans for the broken gun laws.
Gun Control Gun control has become a polarizing and controversial issue around the globe. There have been many reported issues of mass shootings both in schools and in the public, making it a hot button issue. Proponents argue that, if the government strictly controls the ownership of guns, such tragedies can be prevented. Most Americans have an obsession with guns because the law allows them to do so. Therefore, they are always ready to scoff at anyone trying to control gun ownership.
Instead of banning or limiting guns, the evidence will show that removing the current restrictions and targeting individuals instead of guns will be a more effective process. The topic of gun control has two polarized opinions. One such opinion targets the individuals responsible for the crime, instead of just the weapons. John Moorhouse and Brent Wanner tackle the issue of gun control in their article “Does Gun Control Reduce Crime Or Does Crime Increase Gun Control”, which was published in 2006 in the twenty-sixth volume of the Cato Journal. These researchers looked at the effects gun control laws had on violent crime and gun violence in the individual states.
Gun Control Gun control is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as the regulation of selling, owning, and use of guns. Gun control has been a very controversial topic on Capitol Hill for a long time. Although, within more recent decades gun control has been a more heated topic of discussion. This is due to higher gun related death rates and an uprise of mass killings such as the Columbine highschool massacre which left 23 injured and 15 killed (CNN Library) and the recent Las Vegas shooting which left 58 killed and nearly 500 injured (Gomez and White). Gun control activist heavily support the controlling of firearms while Gun rights activist oppose heavy regulation.
