Greek Language Essay

During the eighteenth century and up until the nineteenth century, Greeks were under the control of the Ottoman Empire. It was during this time that nationalism and the idea that your people should have the best became really popular. Greeks in the Balkans and in Asia Minor decided to revolt against their rulers in March 1821, starting a nine-year war in search for their independence. When other European countries siding with them intervened, the Greeks finally gain their freedom. During the war, people formed opinions on the Greeks: some praised and sympathized with them while others didn’t.

You sit on the couch of your living room when you decide that you want to watch some television. You flip through all of the channels and cannot seem to find anything that sparks an interest. When, suddenly you see going across the screen in bold print “Local Fraternity/Sorority in trouble”. Trouble is what most of America sees Greek Life as. To say that they have not earned the reputation of being troublesome is an understatement.

Louis Pasteur A chemist, innovator, and microbiologist, Louis Pasteur brought forth a wide number of accomplishments; large and small. A list of the most renowned achievements includes the discovery and invention of pasteurization, vaccines for both rabies and anthrax, and germ theory; all significant advances in the world of science. Beginning his life in the commune of Dole, located in France, Louis was now a part of the Pasteur family. He was described as an average student by his teachers in his early times, although having an artistic talent.

Language is often seen as relatively stable; like a pillar of stone it stands the test of time. However, language is like a sapling bending and swaying under wind and the rain. Words often transform over time transforming meaning. Since the first word was uttered thousands of years ago to now, countless words have been lost and thousands have changed their meaning. The word “treadmill” is an example of a word that once stood for something completely different than what it now does.

The Greeks contributed to American culture by opening parlors, candy shops, and most known for their restaurants. Greek restaurants started as food stands on the streets of cities, but after city council's banned food sold on streets, Greeks made the switch to permanent shops. Restaurants were the first steady income for Greeks, making them very popular. The Greeks also made a contribution by opening over 130 Greek Orthodox Churches.

When considering how a person should act in order to gain the most honor or respect, there are varying opinions. Some may say that you simply must be a good person, but how does one constitute what a good person looks like? The Greek word arete represents what the ideal person in Greek society was. Sometimes arete is loosely translated to mean virtue, however this can be misconstrued in the English language. “Virtue, at least in modern english, is almost entirely a moral word; arete on the other hand is used indifferently in all the categories and means simply ‘excellence’”

From the moment they step onto their college campuses for freshman orientation, undergraduate students are encouraged to get involved and make the most of their college experience. Joining Greek life by way of social sororities and social fraternities is a well-known way for undergrads to do this both on their college campuses and within the community. Despite the opportunities that these organizations offer, some colleges and universities are considering whether or not to continue offering their students the opportunity to join such Greek organizations on their campuses due to many recent incidents within the last decade. The New Jersey Institute of Technology has shared statistics on members of fraternities and sororities on their website such as there being 9 million Greeks nationally, 43 of the nation’s 50 largest corporations being headed by fraternity men, along with 85% of Fortune 500 executives and 40 of the 47 U.S. Supreme Court Justices since 1910 and that over 70% of Greeks graduate while under 50% of non-Greek students graduate, among other

Dear Whom it may concern at Alberta Education ??? Intro I am writing this letter to show all the benefits of keeping greek mythological in the grade ten curcicull. I would like you to consider all the the points that will be further made before making any decision that could change the course of how we, the students, view the world. This one decision will impact not only our grade but all the future grade 10s therefore change the future generations thinking and that may not be for the best.

Life Changing or Life Taking? In today’s society Greek life is looked upon as a harmful and detrimental thing in and around college campuses all throughout the United States; is this what they really are or is this just what others perceive them to be? Greek life is constantly receiving bad publicity in the media, “A string of ugly incidents has reinforced the image of entitled white men egging each other on to behave badly: chanting racist songs, sharing pictures of incapacitated women, hazing their pledges” so often times the majority of the population looks down on and frowns upon it (Berrett). Some may say it’s unhealthy due to hazing the members associated with it receive.

Ancient Greece was devided in two periods: Hellenistic and Classical Greece. The Hellenistic period covers the time of ancient Greek (Hellenic) history and Mediterranean history between the passing of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and the rise of the Roman Empire as connoted by the Battle of Actium in 31 BC and the consequent triumph of Ptolemaic Egypt the next year. Classical Greece was a time of around 200 years ( 5th and 4th centuries BC) in Greek culture. This Classical period saw the addition of quite a bit of cutting edge Greece by the Persian Empire and its resulting autonomy. Classical Greece affected the Roman Empire and on the establishments of western human advancement.

The Greek language began with the alphabet. According to Simon Price and Peter Thonemann, the Greeks were the first civilization to use the alphabet. The Greek alphabet influenced our language in many ways. For example, “alphabet” is from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet “alpha” and “beta”. Also, many letters of our modern day alphabet originate from the Greek alphabet such as the letters A,B,E, and O. The Greek alphabet evolved over several centuries, and by the 5th century BC, it used 24 letters - 17 consonants, and 7 vowels.

Greek and Slavic mythology and culture have influenced each other over the years. In both cultures, the people used myths and gods/goddesses to explain how the seasons changed. The god/goddess that embodied spring was reluctant to leave the world of the living to go to the Underworld. * Violence plays a big part in these myths, representing the harsh change to the colder seasons. The differences and similarities in the myths Persephone and Jarilo represent the differences and similarities between Ancient Greek and Ancient Slavic culture.
