Life Changing or Life Taking? In today’s society Greek life is looked upon as a harmful and detrimental thing in and around college campuses all throughout the United States; is this what they really are or is this just what others perceive them to be? Greek life is constantly receiving bad publicity in the media, “A string of ugly incidents has reinforced the image of entitled white men egging each other on to behave badly: chanting racist songs, sharing pictures of incapacitated women, hazing their pledges” so often times the majority of the population looks down on and frowns upon it (Berrett). Some may say it’s unhealthy due to hazing the members associated with it receive. Others say that if done right it can be an uplifting …show more content…
When you hear about an event that’s taken place in and around a sorority or fraternity it’s never about the philanthropy work they do or the scholarships an individual has received, but about the harmful effects surrounding Greek life usually caused by hazing. The definition of hazing is the imposition of strenuous, often humiliating, tasks as part of a program of rigorous physical training and initiation; usually when we think of hazing that’s exactly what comes to mind. We think of the older initiated brothers and sisters putting the pledges through gruesome obstacles to make them earn their place in the organization. Examples of this can be something as small as making the pledges call the older initiated members “ma’am” or “sir” or as large as making the pledges do harmful things to one …show more content…
Each chapter has their own organization that they are devoted to giving their time and money to so that they can help better the community that they live in. President Eva Kirschbaum, a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha said, “’Our main thing is sisterhood through service’” this is a very commendable thing and only someone who is truly interested in bettering the lives of others would be a part of an organization such as this (RSO: to Know). This is an aspect of Greek life that many are unaware of. A lot of people only see the news headlines when something has terribly gone wrong in the Greek community, not when they do something worthy of praise. “Since ESA (Epsilon Sigma Alpha) partnered with St. Jude, the teams have raised a total of $80,000”, anyone who reads that would be blown out of the water. That is an outstanding amount of money and the hard work that had to have gone into that is strenuous (RSO: to
The founders, who were three young African American students wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholarship, and service (About Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity,2016). The Phi Beta Sigma brothers were not judged based on their backgrounds, race, nationality, skin tone, and hair texture. What matter the most was their heart and strong commitment
During the eighteenth century and up until the nineteenth century, Greeks were under the control of the Ottoman Empire. It was during this time that nationalism and the idea that your people should have the best became really popular. Greeks in the Balkans and in Asia Minor decided to revolt against their rulers in March 1821, starting a nine-year war in search for their independence. When other European countries siding with them intervened, the Greeks finally gain their freedom. During the war, people formed opinions on the Greeks: some praised and sympathized with them while others didn’t.
Flanagan is working to reveal the hidden aspects of college and Greek life by using strong diction and personal interviews to describe the attempts at preventing hazing and the college and fraternity members’ lack of responsibility for hazing incidents. First, Flanagan describes the many attempts to prevent hazing in order to better serve college students and fraternity members. One interview with a man named Jud Horras, a former member of Beta Theta Pi, acknowledged the problems within fraternities and assured Flanagan that “changes were coming.” However, Horras avoided the main problem: students are being killed. It seems that hazing is “the norm,” and many people are turning a blind eye to these terrible incidents.
Carone attempts to inform readers on the realities of life as a student actively involved in a fraternity. Through strong language, it is evident that Carone is passionate about the issues of sexual assault. In the article, Carone mentions a typical fraternity environment which can cause cases of sexual assault to go unreported. Casual sex, drugs, and alcohol are common in fraternities, and those who do report are often shut down by other members. Carone talks about several cases to show that many assault cases happen in a similar fashion, usually when the subject is intoxicated.
“Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise, I rise, I rise.,” to become a Delta Woman. When asked to express why I should be awarded the honor & pleasure of being apart this great sorority; I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed but also very humbled. However, I am reminded of the great women Delta Sigma Theta has helped mold some of the most influential women in the world. I want to be apart of the most illustrious sorority organization.
The Ancient Olympics evolved from one of only men and one champion to one of unisex competitors and many champions. The Olympics changed greatly over the years. Some are impressive changes, while others are not. The Olympics is widely known and has been a tradition for countless years. Ancient Greece’s Olympics has endured through many changes into the Modern Olympics such as traditions and many little things.
“The chief significance of Alpha Phi Alpha lies in its purpose to stimulate, develop, and cement an intelligent, trained leadership in the unending fight for freedom, equality, and fraternity. Our task is endless.” Jewel Henry Arthur Callis. Since its founding Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has remained loyal to its ideal of providing advocacy for its community.
Within any particular system, there is present an underlying motive for success in every sense of the word. While in some scenarios, that motive can be hidden beneath the desire to fit in, above all this, the idea of prosperity is the main factor in motivating individuals toward their goals. Susan Faludi, the author of “The Naked Citadel”, explores how at the all-boys college, students are pressured into conforming to the “Whole Man” standard where they develop brotherhood, a sense of structure, and belonging. When these men are able to develop such strong bonds with one another, several flaws come about. The majors issues at The Citadel, lie in their denial of women into the school, and the traumatic hazing new students endure.
When joining a sorority, it is made very clear that whichever sorority you are trying to pledge that there will be no hazing allowed. It depends on the school and chapter you are associated in whether they will make you participate in hazing. Hazing is humiliating and sometimes dangerous initiation rituals, which are usually performed on college students seeking to be in a fraternity or sorority. If you really are passionate about being a part of a DST, you will get through it! Delta Sigma Theta traditions include: secrets, passwords, signs and grips are never written but are transmitted by word of mouth from one Delta to another.
Another great aspect of joining Greek life and finding an appropriate group to be a part of is the numerous amount of networking opportunities that are available. David Marmaros and Bruce Sacerdote, authors of ‘Peer and Social Networks in Job Search’, conducted research on Dartmouth College seniors who would use social networks to find a job. After conducting their research, it was shown that “Students networking with fraternity and sorority members and alumni are most likely to obtain high paying jobs”, depending on how strong the connection was between the employment company and the organization, (Marmaros, Sacerdote. Of course, it is Brenelus 4 possible for an individual outside of a sorority to gain the same amount of opportunities, but
I understand that not all brotherhoods are especially positive and have approbatory aims. For instance being part of a gang may mean you have a support system and are part of a brotherhood, but it does not mean you are bettering yourself. One other main reason why I have a desire to become a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity is because I want to have positive impact on the community around me, whether it be Temple University’s community or the general Philadelphia area. It would bring me great joy to be a part of an Alpha Phi Alpha project that would include reaching out to the youth of Philadelphia.
Ancient Greek culture is majorly influential in Western culture. Major works of literature, art, and political structure from ancient Greece remain relevant to modern Western society. However one can contrast these two societies by observing and valuing the art of ancient Greece. One can differentiate ancient Greek culture and modern Western culture by analyzing the treatment of religious figures, attitude towards emotion, and reaction towards nudity in each society. Ancient Greece was a polytheistic society.
There are many greek influences on our culture today. However, these impacts are not very widely known in our modern society. The Greek culture affects our everyday way of life. They created democracy, the alphabet, libraries, the Olympics, math, science, architecture, and even lighthouses. Greecians created systems that would not be imagined in a person’s wildest dreams.
But, as Phi Theta Kappans, we are expected to support and aid our fellow members. For some strange reason, society looks at us and expects us to be our own person, yet wants us to
Hi this is Anna Mudry & welcome to another edition of Campus Updates where we will look at the newest issues around college campuses from the perspective of students. In this podcast, I will be looking at hazing specifically in college fraternities and how it affects all communities from college students themselves to their families at home. In today’s society, there is a growing number of reported cases in college fraternities of hazing in the pledging process from the higher level members.
