Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leapt far out into the sea. Once his body smacked the ocean, the waves rumbled as they viciously crashed against the rocks. Thunder crackled violently in the air. Tides swished and swirled around in a whirlpool motion, beating the air as if starting a tornado. Rainford’s world became pitch-black. The only color he saw was darkness, and the only thing he heard was stillness. It seemed death was the only option. General Zaroff is a King in a Monarchy; what he says goes. Rainsford could not take it anymore and just like that, he felt absolutely nothing and fell into a deep sleep of unconsciousness. “Oh my,” exclaimed General Zaroff, “What is this I see?” General Zaroff towered over the cliff and
General Zaroff challenged Rainsford by saying, “I’ll cheerfully acknowledge myself defeated if I do not find you by the third day.” So, Rainsford accepted the challenge, and on the third day, he fooled the General by swimming back to the house and hiding behind the bed curtain. When General Zaroff went to his room, to sleep, Rainsford surprised him and
Survive for three days with only a hunting knife and a supply of food while being hunted by General Zaroff. In the ending, Connell suddenly states that Rainsford had never slept in a better bed, cutting General Zaroff’s statement short. Rainsford
He then wondered what to do from there and decided to jump into the sea and swim along the shore to Zaroff’s house. He had been swimming away from the hounds and soon made it to Zaroff’s bedroom to hide and waiting for him to arrive. Zaroff then finished eating and came upstairs. He went to the window then found Rainsford in the curtains and he was shocked to see him there. Zaroff then congratulated Rainsford and “Zaroff said with a deep bow, One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds.
Twas the night after General Zaroff was killed during insane battle between Zaroff and Rainsford. General Zaroff was killed late at night, the battle between them was insanely tough to beat each other because the two great opponents were going against one on one. They had both walked in on that battle last night, and that's when everything turned the wrong way. Zaroff was testing Rainsford to see if he was strong enough and tough enough to go threw the obstacles that Zaroff was preparing for him. Rainsford went into that battle knowing pretty much nothing at all, he just knew he had to go into that battle and fight with everything he had.
When an unfortunate accident throws Rainsford overboard, he stays calm (Connell 28). In this sudden event, he needs to stay calm, and he does that very well. From this point, he immediately looks around and surveys to find a place to go that isn’t stranded in the ocean. “General, I wish to leave this island at once” (Connell 36). Hearing all about the island and General Zaroff makes Rainsford decide he needs to leave.
Rainsford knew that he was unable to retreat and forced to face danger. Rainsford realized that animals felt and how they had to face the danger just like how he did.
Instead of being fearful and wanting to give up, Rainsford became zealous; a fearless survivor. “ Twenty feet below him the sea rumbled and hissed. Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leapt far out into the sea.”
No matter what he did, those on the yacht could not her him. He continued to yell until his voice was only a whisper. After what seemed like hours of being half drowned in the ocean, a quite, accented voice whispered in his ear. The pounding rain and thrashing sea should’ve drowned out his words, but Rainsford could hear them as if they were his own thoughts. “Who shall feed the hounds tonight, Rainsford?”
(1.255). In The Most Dangerous Game “But the hope that was in Rainsford’s brain when he climbed died, he saw in the shallow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet.”
As he continued on his trail, he heard the cry of a bird nearby from where he was standing. He knew Rainsford would know he was coming. Rainsford was a smart one he thought to himself. But that wasn't a problem for General Zaroff, he always liked a good challenge.
Then Rainsford came and surprised General Zaroff while he was in bed, Rainsford killed General Zaroff. The text states, “Rainsford! How in god’s name did you get here?” (Connell 20). In addition it states, “I’m still a beast at bay, he said in a low, hoarse voice.
“After swimming for what seemed like forever, I heard an ear piercing sound off in the distance. I decided to swim in the direction of what I knew was a gun-shot, knowing that where there is men, there is food.” Rainsford explained. He later went on to tell about how he weakly pulled himself onto a rocky shore, knowing that he had now escaped from the tortuous waters, he went into a deep sleep.
When placed in this situation, Rainsford has transformed from being the hunter to becoming the huntee, and is now in the position of all the animals he has carelessly killed before. Towards the end of the story, while Rainsford is being hunted by Zaroff and his pack of dogs, the narrator describes how Rainsford feels by saying that: “Rainsford now knew how an animal at bay feels” (22). The sensation of extreme fear and worry had finally gotten to him, and he can relate to how the animals he hunt may
The narrator says, “Rainsford held his breath. The general’s eye had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring”(13). Rainsford is scared to death when the general is hunting him because this is a real life or death situation. General Zaroff is pulling tricks on Rainsford to try to get him to come down from the tree.
“Rainsford hesitated. He heard the hounds. Then he leaped far out into the sea…” (235). Again, Rainsford had to reason with himself. When he heard the pounding paws of the pack and the heavy breathing of the general, he knew that he would have to jump.
