The reason why we communicate, is to transfer information and gather a greater understanding through conversation, issues or particular areas of interest. The best level of communication is when an individual is able to competently respond to what the other individual is saying.

It is good to have effective communication within the adult social care setting as communication is used every day. It is used to encourage our services users to perform tasks, either verbally or physically. It is used to document what has been done ready for the next worker to take over. It allows us to work as a team. It allows us to provide a good service to the best of our ability.

Viswanathan (2010) says communication can take many forms of verbal and non-verbal methods which may include speaking, writing, gestures, expressions, listening and body language to name a few. All of these things should be taken into consideration to ensure an effective means of sending and receiving information. How and what information is sent may not be received in the same manner intended.
By planning what we want to say, it is much easier to deliver clear and direct messages, whether it be speaking one-to-one with a parent or attending a governors meeting. However, written communication comes with the disadvantage of lacking any sort of body language. Non verbal communication such as emails to colleagues or written student assessments are easily miscommunicated if not carefully worded and easy to comprehend. It will make it much easier for both the student and their parents if there is a clear and consistent system for marking work - something as simple as tick boxes of ‘can do’ statements for lower primary students.
