This research was conducted by Morey, Peterson, Pieper, Sloane, Crowley, Cowper, McConnell, Bosworth, Ekelund, and Pearson in a year of 2009. This study took a different perspective and measured the effect of multi-component physical activity counseling (PAC) while promoting physical activity functions on older veterans over the age of 70. The population of the study lived at the Veterans’ Affairs Medical Center of Durham. This center provided physical activity exercises for the veterans who lived too far away to participate in a facility based program on their own. This study is important to include in my research interest because it focuses on a different type of disability. Elderly veterans who are physically unable to work have a hard time …show more content…
Paralympic Military Sport CAMP in order to increase an understanding of community-based sports, recreation and physical activity services. The majority of participants reported that physical activity resulted in a positive change in their mood and quality of life. Physically disabled veterans reported that physical activity promoted a sense of empowerment, sense of freedom, and the ability to feel equal to others. This article connects with Hawkin’s research using the concept of empowerment in rehabilitative sports which supports the idea of sport providing the feeling of power and an ability to build-on self-confidence through physical challenges faced in sport activities. This study used in-depth interviews to examine service members who currently or have in the past participated in the recreational sports during and after a U.S. Paralympic Camp. Paralympic events contain about twenty-five different sporting events in which military and non-military Paralympians participated. Most importantly, results showed the participant’s involvement in recreation sports and their ability to see beyond their physical injuries which shows significant improvement in their self-acceptance and expansion of what they value in life. Also, motivational sources were discussed as veterans admitted that sports give them a motivational burst through participating in recreation sports, and motivation through involving themselves with other injured service members and their physical abilities and skills. It is so significant to understand that physical activity is not just being active and physically capable of participating. It is much more valuable for veterans with disabilities as they discover their new purpose in life and relate their challenges to those who already dealt with them. Hawkins, Cory, and Crowe supported the finding of the study that
Having a job in society is essential for the veterans to set them up to a successful
How are the people of Ancient Greece similar to the people of modern day? Modern day people actually have more in common with the ancient greeks than one would think. In the articles “ Psychiatrist Who Counsels Vets Wins Genius Grant” by Joseph Shapiro and “Back From War but Not Really Home” by Caroline Alexander, talks about veterans who have post traumatic stress disorder, and how the epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey help treat them. The Epic poems expose the struggles of Modern day veterans by revealing what kind of trauma they experienced, yet it also helps them for proving how they are not the only ones to feel this way. Veterans connect with the poems, because they understand what war is like.
Being able to relate to one another in the community the text provides an example of a personal experience, “... without the ability to play, my passion is stronger than ever. I think once you mature and understand the blessing of being an athlete and having something like that to believe in and work for, the love for the game is at its peak. There’s nothing worse than being incapable of channeling that love and adoration for something I once didn’t appreciate. That’s what kills me most”(Davis 3). The importance of this text is to share the experience within the community that allows members of the Discourse community to compare both their perspective.
It’s the sad relativity and an unpleasant fact that even today, there are tons of veterans who are living in poverty. The word poverty could be defined as an extremely bad state of being poor, but there is so much more to the word poor. Our veterans know the real meaning of poor and understand the real concept of the sacrifice. They sacrifice their youth for the service of the country and in expense they allow their nation to keep the freedom that they rightfully deserve. There are administrations out there that are supposed to help our veterans, for example the Veterans Administration Hospitals
You keep walking and then look away as if there is nothing you can do, hoping that someone else will be able to help. It is time to give back and make a difference in the lives of Veterans. Leaving something different can be a scary experience. One of the hardest situations ever occurred to me is not doing what was expected of me. Always afraid to move against the tide, though I decided that was a valuable skill that I should leave.
Many veterans that have served this country have ended up homeless or in poverty. This nation has struggled with getting a handle of this problem and putting adequate supports in place to resolve the problem. Veterans need to have the right supports in place to prevent this. The veterans’ services need to be comprehensive supports, and in place as soon as a soldier transitions to civilian life.
America’s favorite excuse for homeless people is that they’re lazy. But even higher ranked veterans end up on the cold, hard streets. They are constantly turned away from jobs when they return home from being out the country doing tours around the world. In an interview with to veterans that fought in Vietnam, they were injured and dropped off. Once they were seen as unfit to fight they were sent back with nothing but PTSD and terrible memories of the war they fought in.
Physical and mental injuries affect a veteran's chance of getting a job drastically. These veterans have serious injuries that they suffered from defending and fighting for our country. Now when they return, they find that their injuries are causing them to be put at a disadvantage in the job market. The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans says that “47,725 veterans are homeless on any given night”. That is around 9% of all homeless people and more than half of that 9% is between 18 and 30(Faq About Homeless Veterans).
Gaining these benefits from the VA are difficult enough to receive without them not being very effective. A lot of these jobless veterans also show signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that is left untreated because they have limited access to VA
In the article a world without work it is shown just how important labor is for not just veterans but all americans across the country, “According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the U.S. veteran population was more than 21 million strong as of 2014.”, that 's 7% of the entire American population in 2014. This may not seem like a very large number but about 360,000 military members leave the service each year creating the need for more jobs. The problem with a lack of jobs for veterans is rooted at the lack of awareness of just how valuable these people are in the workforce. It has been found that veterans can bring leadership skills, technical expertise, and the ability to learn new skills more quickly than the average job
Veteran’s Benefits Veteran’s pay a heavy price for our freedom, but do we in turn repay them back? Once veteran’s return home they receive several benefits, such as education, disability compensation, and low-cost medical care. Each are specific due to how they benefit each veteran, but not all are capable of fully providing the veteran. Veterans receive benefits based on discharge from active military service other than dishonorable conditions. Active service must be serving full time as a member under several branches, Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, or as a commissioned officer of the Public Health Service, Environmental Services Administration or the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Congress of 1776 encouraged enlistments by authorizing pensions for soldiers who were disabled. Later, individual states and even communities provided medical and hospital care to veterans. There is an increased need for extensive medical and disability benefits for veterans as medical technology is better able to save the lives of the soldiers. The increase in women veterans is also an issue at hand because
You feel relaxed when you're with your friends, and when you're doing something that you enjoy doing. However, one side reasons why sports bring many together and connect is maybe they might want the same goal at the end to win a event or make a meaningful memory with others. By participating in a sport, or multiple sports, it can have a positive impact on one’s
This will help me in my future in therapeutic recreation (TR), because as a therapeutic recreational therapist, it is my job to assess and develop the leisure experience and encourage: perceived freedom, positive emotions, meaningful activities, intrinsically motivation, a sense of identity, and self-determination. Stumbo, indicated that it is important, “To engage in leisure to express talents, demonstrate capabilities, achieve one’s potential, and experience a variety of positive emotions associated with participating in enjoyable and meaningful activities” (Stumbo 2012, fig 2.1, pg 26). This experience taught me that sports can be adapted using different equipment, and motivation is important when practicing TR. I am glad I had this experience, as it was a very valuable teaching tool in
The Paralympics Committee states that ‘Para,’ in Greek, means besides, which alludes the event running parallel to the Olympic games. In contention, para, in Greek, also means irregular, or amiss, describing a negative connotation, although not one the Paralympic Committee chooses to express. In 2001, the Paralympics and Olympic Committees signed a contract to further promote and sponsor the Paralympics. By signing the contract, it changed the Paralympics from a place where disabled athletes would come together to showcase their athletic abilities in order to stop the negative stigmas to an event that would educate others about their disabilities. However, as the Paralympics have grown in popularity over the years, the Paralympic goals have shifted from education, empowerment, and achievement to money, commercialization and networking.
