Shakespeare’s famous play, Romeo and Juliet, has characters that range from the care-free Mercutio, the love-stricken Romeo, and several other personalities that fall in between. Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, is a vicious fighter who will duel anyone to release some of the unexplained rage that he keeps inside. The Montagues are the family that pushes his hatred over the top and when they cross his path, he is always quick to challenge them to a fight. Other than where the Montagues are concerned, the source of his hot-headed temper remains a mystery to those that know him. If closely examined, however, Tybalt’s character could be explained through a few key observations.

From the beginning of the play it is evident that Tybalt is a strong willed and anxious character. This does not play a key role in the play until the party at Capulet’s house. Tybalt notices Romeo and his friends at the party and becomes extremely angered because they are Montagues at a Capulet party. Instantly Tybalt says to his Page, “Fetch me my rapier, boy” (1.5.54). Tybalt has such an infuriating personality that he intends to kill poor Romeo, who is just trying to have a good time.

Furthermore, Tybalt's deep loathe towards Romeo leads to a street fight, which resulted in Mercutio and Tybalt's tragic deaths. Tybalt says, "Boy, this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me./ Therefore turn and draw.” (3.1.67-68). Tybalt's actions subsequently led to Romeo's banishment from Verona which led to the long distance from Juliet therefore, ending the young lover’s relationship. Romeo and Juliet In the play “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare, Tybalt is responsible for most of the violence and death. This is mainly because of his rage about the family fued between the Montagues and the Capulets. He is a Capulet and he wants to fight or kill Montagues anytime he sees or hears one of them.

He was the one that started most fights with the Montagues, he wouldn’t back down when things were getting too out of hand (when sword fights started), and his despisement of the Montague 's was out of control- even worse than Lord and Lady Capulet’s resentment. As it be said, Tybalt is most definitely one of the most violent people in the Capulet family. Between the bickering of the two families, Tybalt’s fights with the younger of the Montague’s stood strong. He was usually the one to start a fight with a snarky comment, or just outright demand that they go against him, while it seemed the Montague 's tried to stay out of his way, but at the same time, they felt they had to try to hold their ground.

Later in the play Tybalt's recklessness reaches its peak when he challenges Romeo to a fight on the streets of Verona. Romeo, who has just married Juliet, is refusing to fight and tries to de-escalate the situation by saying, "I do protest I never injured thee, But love thee better than thou canst devise, Till thou shalt know the reason of my love" (Rom 3.1.64-66). Tybalt hates Romeo with his whole heart and does not care about the consequences that will happen by doing so. Tybalt is hot headed and rash. In the first act of Romeo and Juliet he is already starting fights as stated by him “What, drawn, and talk of peace? I hate the word / As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.”(1.1.63-64). Tybalt’s hate of peace is the most blatant example of his hot headed and rash actions. He is trying to get the Montagues riled up so that he can have a fight.

Tybalt does not want believe in having peace and keeping everything calm. Moreover, he talks about how much he hates the Montague since they are enemies. Tybalt is a violent person. When Tybalt is at the Capulets feats,

Emotions are what propel you forward to reach your goal, but what also stop you from breaking your limits. They are what weigh into our decisions and help lead us to the choices we forever live with. Not only can they determine what we do, but also when and how we do it. At times they are stronger than others, pulling us forward or throwing us back as if we have absolutely no control. Tybalt instigates Romeo when he said, “Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford no better term than this: thou art a villain” (3.1.31-32). Tybalt is insulting Romeo by calling him a villain, thus adding more tension to the situation. By doing so, this made Romeo more willing to fight. Romeo tried to avoid the fight more than once. Tybalt was determined to fight someone, which is supported by the fact that he went through with fighting Mercutio even after Romeo rejected the initial altercation.

Though the Montagues try to make peace to cause no harm to the people around them and cause trouble Tybalt decides to say he hates peace and starts a fight. This shows how emotional Tybalt is and how he gets angry very easily, because the Montagues were not even trying to start any problems and Tybalt made the fight. Another example how angry and emotional Tybalt can get is when he tries to fight Romeo at the ball and quotes “ It Fits when such a villain is a guest, i’ll not endure him.” This shows that Tybalt’s anger overwhelms him very easily and automatically when he sees something he doesn’t like, because in the situation he was in Romeo was trying to have fun and not doing anything wrong Tybalt still tries to fight him because he’s a montague, even after Lord Capulet says himself to “leave Romeo alone and worry not of

(1.5.80) Any man or child would not wish to undermine his or her elders authority especially when at their house so for Tybalt to say this is a very bold statement of his character. Not only is he hateful and bold but Tybalt is also very demanding to the people around him. He orders his servant to fetch his sword and in the olden days people were very mean and demanding of their servants. He also orders his uncle to get rid of Romeo at his uncles party.

Secondly Tybalt has too much rage and hate within him. Tybalt is filled with hatred. An example is that in the beginning he states: "What, drawn, and talk of peace! I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee" This proves that tybalt has too much hatred. Tybalt will never like the Montagues.

Tybalt pressed on with aggression, which would lead to his own death, with only himself to blame. Grudges don’t lead to anyone's well being, especially
