As an example, while Santiago goes to look for the Englishman, he finds that he has built a furnace outside his tent, and the Englishman tells Santiago that he is starting the first stage of Master Work and that he must overcome the fear of failure; "' It was my fear of failure that first kept me from attempting Master Work. Now, I’m beginning what I could have started ten years ago. But I’m happy at least that I didn't wait twenty years’”(102). For example, after Santiago travels back to Andalusia and digs inside the abandoned church, he finds a chest full of treasure. He thinks about how he was able to reach his treasure and achieve his Personal Legend; “It's true; life really is generous to those who pursue their Personal Legend, the boy thought" (170). Santiago decided to follow his dream and never gave up, even when he was robbed in Tangier. As a result, he met many people, including Fatima, the love of his life, and learned many important lessons from them. Finally, he found his treasure. To conclude, Santiago is very happy about his journey and his life is good because he worked hard to reach his
These hurdles did not stop him from continuing his mission; on the contrary, they were all, for Santiago, life lessons and experiences. Along his journey, Santiago meets many mentors, teachers and helpers. Each emerges into his life for a cause, whether it is
Fear of failure is the second greatest barrier that Santiago has confronted while trying to fulfill his personal legend. “My heart is afraid that it will have suffer,” (134). In different parts of the novel, Santiago is confronted with his own fear, He was concern that things will not go according to how he had intended them to happen. In the first place, there is no indecision when it comes to pursuing a personal legend, instead the one must be bravery enough to overcome all the difficulties they might have to deal with along the path. “If a person is living out his personal Legend, he knows everything he needs to know.
He is willing to take changes and is not afraid of those who try to hold him back from his dream, when he began to communicate with the Soul of the World and he stood firm in the powerful wind or when the men beat him up for his treasure. He did not waver. He become stronger from it. You can see how his personality changes when hie is put in certain situations, but you can see a change from when he started his journey to where he finished. When people see santiago, I want them to see his growth and how he overcame his
The Importance of Perseverance At many times in people’s lives, they consider giving up. This is also true for Santiago, the protagonist in Paulo Coelho's fantasy novel The Alchemist. Santiago is on a journey to find a hidden treasure he saw in a dream. Along this journey he continues to contemplate whether he should just give up, or continue his adventure.
Santiago realizes that he finally has a place and that he is supposed to be following his Personal
During Santiago's journey in The Alchemist, he is told where his treasure is and encouraged to go find it. Many people are telling him to follow his dreams and find his treasure by saying things like, “...people are capable at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of” (Coelho 23). Coelho is saying that people can, at any time, follow their dreams. This is presented through Santiago’s discoveries. The epic hero is just an ordinary boy, which shows that anyone is capable of following their dreams at any time through the lessons a regular person is being taught.
The decision was difficult as both options don’t provide him a steady choice. As being a shepherd does not promise him to be with the merchant daughter and for finding a treasure he need to give up his well settled life. But at the end he chose to find treasure as it allows him to purse his personal legend or dram of travelling throughout the world. He always considers his choice before taking a decision this can be seen through this conversation of Santiago with himself, “Here, I am between my flock and my treasure, the boy thought. He had to choose between something he had become accustomed to and something he wanted to have.
… The boy was shaking with fear, but the alchemist helped him out of the tent. … the alchemist continued, “usually the threat of death makes people a lot more aware of their lives.”” (Coelho 140 6 8, Coelho 142 2) Just like before Santiago is afraid and doesn't know what to do in a situation of adversity. But he does not give up he perseveres and developes
This is illuminated when the Alchemist says, “‘There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure’” (141). This particular moment shows that even though Santiago has both the ability and the knowledge to achieve his dream, it is impossible to attain it if he fears even attempting to reach it. Consequently, this fear acts as his enemy and a barrier that stands in the way of the meaningful and happy life he is destined to accomplish. Furthermore, another one of his fears is the fear of losing what he believes he has already earned. ” He reminded himself that he had been a shepherd and that he could be a shepherd again.
I felt my future brightening and I started living with hopes. The alchemist sayings on achieving one’s dream stayed in my head fresh. “(…) when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too” (pg. 150). Dear Diary, I spent the past few days lying in bed and thinking about my pursuit towards my dream.
A personal legend is not just the result found at the end of Santiago's life. It’s more than simply reaching final destination. Santiago personal legend is achieved when he completes what he is doing. “It’s true that everything has it’s personal legend ,but one day that personal legend will be realized ,so each thing has to transform itself into something better ,and to acquire a new personal legend, until someday, the soul of the world becomes one only thing.”
Santiago is a young boy who yearns for adventure and purpose in his life.from a young age he knows he wants to see the world and becomes a shepherd to experience new places. Santiago still struggles to find meaning and purpose throughout his many years of travel though. It's not until he goes on the journey to follow his personal legend that he truly develops as a character. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, challenges readers to acknowledge their self-worth and realize they are strongest when they love themselves.
He thought it’s waste of time and money. Later in the novel, the man who beats Santiago does not believe his own dream, but when he describes his dream to Santiago, Santiago recognizes it as an omen telling him where to find the treasure (Coelho 167). Thus, it’s the person loss as he ignored dream. The importance of actual, sleeping dreams parallels the importance of personal, symbolic dreams as embodied by Personal Legends. Thus, dreams require backbreaking work and determination to sacrifice anything to make it come true.
At the start of summer, my parents bought a copy of Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist. I never knew how much this book would change me. That’s unsurprising since, Paulo Coelho themed this book after wisdom. The book has many wise teachings and quotes that influenced how I behaved during the summer and in these first few days of high school. About midway into summer, I went on a 3 hour road trip to Las Vegas for two consecutive basketball tournaments.
Santiago never gives up on his quest and does everything he can to see it through. No matter how tired he is or how injured his hands and body are, he has a commitment to complete his task. He even goes as far as promising to God that he will pray 500 hail mary’s if he survives the full duration of his expedition, which is especially significant due to the fact that Santiago is not a man of faith. Not only is this theme reflected in the old man, but in both the marlin and Manolin as well.
