9. PROFESSIONAL AUTONOMY IN NURSING Nursing has come a long way from being the hand maidens of the physician to having control over nursing knowledge and practice. It now has two essential ingredients of accountability and autonomy. There is more demand from the nurses now than in the past when all they were expected to do was just to provide comfort and care.
In 1870, nursing had been learnt from the mothers to the daughters. Now it has been changed to the school education that the students learn the nursing skill from the nursing professionals and the education programs of nursing keep developing from the 1900s to now that the diploma school has been changed to BSN, AND, and the postgraduate school has also been replaced by Master degree, CNL, PhD, DNSc, ND and DNP (Martha, n.d.). Therefore, the people have more chance to learn and be the nurse. Education programs also produce more and more professional nurses for the world to develop the nursing profession. Nursing education provides the nursing theories and practical training for the students to help them learn the knowledge of nursing and their duties, in order to protect patient safety and the safety of the public.
Today’s nurses are viewed as very academic and respected individuals; however this was not always the case. Looking back in time, it is able to be seen how nurses were not always as revered until after they were seen in combat. It is also important to know that the nurse was easily able to be distinguished through her uniform until the 1960’s and from then on, a slight variety is added in until the uniform is completely changed universally. It is important for nurses to look back and see how far the profession has come and to see the differences in the image of the nurse throughout the years. In nursing practice, a nurse shoulders the responsibility of making decisions that affect their patient's life. In order to effectively make the best decision, they must be able to use critical thinking. Critical Thinking is important because it is the difference between simply believing what is given and being able to make one's own educated decisions based upon evidence provided in the field. Task 1 So many influences throughout time has impacted Nursing in so many ways in which has also shaped this professional sector. There are several historical and contemporary influences that has made Nursing such diverse and versatile career. I will be looking at Florence Nightingale, a well-known historical figure that has influenced modern healthcare and fabricated nursing into a noble profession for women. I will be comparing Florence Nightingale’s influences on the Economic cost of Nursing in this modern age and the issues in this workforce have changed over time.

The experimental model for reflective decision making is mainly grounded and matched from holistic clinical contexts and holistic patient centered care where it is delivered. This needs nurses to apply wide range of practical, observational, emotional and interpersonal skills, that is not restricted to scientific research and theory whereas applicable to patient care. Such holistic observation of reflective decision making is often supported from multiple intelligence theory (Gardner, 1987), that mainly identified spatial-visual, linguistic, logical-mathematical, intrapersonal and interpersonal forms, bodily-kinesthetic and musical-auditory intelligence forms completing wide range of skills.
