College education has become a necessity in the United States. For many years college level education was nowhere near as important as it is in today’s society. Before you could earn your high school diploma and go find a job making decent money, however the higher someone went in their education the more money they made. Now, with so many job opportunities and a lot of people wanting jobs, it has required employers to want their applicants to have an education past high school. Many have talked and noticed how expensive it is to go to college. Almost everyone can see that the price of a college education will only continue to rise. “An important pathway to the middle class now runs through higher education, but rising costs are making it harder and harder for ordinary Americans to get the education they want and need” ( Sanders). Many student who’s families can not easily afford the cost of college often do not further their education after high school. Students that know that their family struggles with money already don’t want to ask for more so that they can go to college. As the cost of college has been on the rise many have talked about wanting to provide students with a free college education. Many bring up that the states grant their students with free public education till they complete the twelfth grade. After that, they have to pay tuition ( Gonchar). But few bring up the fact that Germany, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and a few other countries have free college for their students and how well they have succeeded in doing so. However, there are a couple of states such as Oregon, Mississippi, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Massachusetts that have proposals for free college education. “It may seem hard to believe, but there was a time when higher education was pretty close to free in this country, at least for many Americans. After World War II, the GI Bill gave free education to more than 2 million veterans, many of whom would otherwise never have been able to go to college. Many no longer go to college, not because they don’t want to but, because they can’t afford to. A countless number of people in the United States would like to provide the future generations with free college. People are starting to realize that students do not pursue secondary education because they are to overwhelmed with trying to figure out how they are going to pay for it. The public recognizes that high school student end their education with a high school diploma because they see how much debt college students rack up. With this knowledge it has lead to proposals for free college. If free college was offered in the United States like it is in other countries it would allow student to go to college and not have to worry about how to pay for it (The Odyssey). In order to qualify for free college you would have to maintain a 2.5 GPA, graduate within the normal time frame, and stay in-state. The proposal for free education not only a perk for students but also to the country. A college level education has many perks. “Education is essential for personal and national well-being. We live in a highly competitive, global economy, and if our economy is to be strong, we need the best-educated workforce in the world. We won’t achieve that if, every year, hundreds of thousands of bright young people cannot afford to go to college while millions more leave school deeply in debt” ( Sanders).
