When the north won the civil war, the knew that there was going to be some changes being made. But that doesn’t mean they were going to be all good. There were going to be people that disagree with the union. There is going to be a really bad president that's going to makes really dumb decisions like Andrew Johnson. But the reconstruction era did not go as well as planned. Black codes were passed, people were loyal to the union, and the people who started the civil war come back into power like nothing happen. This time was not one of America's brightest moments Lincoln's 10% plan for reconstruction was a very valuable idea. When he was murdered, Johnson would only allow full pardon if the high ranked official came to him personally and ask for full pardon. Now that the people who were head of south were …show more content…
But when Johnson allowed Black codes to be passed, they weren't really free at all anymore. The rights they had compared to white men and women were not equal. Blacks could not meet after dark. Blacks were not allowed to carry any type of gun. Blacks were not allowed to marry anyone that was white. Blacks were not allowed to own or rent a house with in city limits. Blacks couldn't even enter town without their boss's permission. These black codes did not help reconstruction in anyway. The North won the war, they should get what they wished. Black men and women were not free when the 13th amendment was passed. They did not know what it would be like to be free, to live normal like every other white men and women. They didn’t know what normal was, most of they didn’t know how to read or write yet. Now they are expected to take care of themselves, your money, get jobs. How are they going to do this without a basic education. From the whites that would whip them if they were caught reading or writing? They won’t even let them into town. How is this going to work without their
In 1865, the Confederate Armies were defeated by the Union Armies, before the civil war the country was divided North and South. Issues included taxes, states rights, and war but the biggest issue was Slavery. This was an issue for the south but had yet been banned by Abraham lincoln in 1863. Although these problems were significant Jefferson believed that in order to have a normal society you must have struggle, '' The tree of liberty must be refreshed by the blood of the patriots''. Also taxes were a problem for farmers because, farmers were payed very little money and when the Government raised the taxes it forced them to fall into debt.
Reconstruction is during which the United States began to rebuild the Southern society after they lost to the civil war. It lasted from 1865 to 1877, and it was initiated by President Lincoln until his assassination in 1865. President Johnson continued Lincoln’s agenda to continue the Reconstruction. Throughout the process of Reconstruction, one of its main purpose was to guarantees for equal rights for all people, especially for the African Americans. Even though slavery was abolished after the civil war, many Southerners were still against the idea of equal rights for all black people, such as the Republicans.
Reconstruction had many faces during and after the Civil War. First, there was Lincoln’s plan, and then Johnson’s plan, but the Military Reconstruction Act affected the country the most. Because of the effects, this act is viewed in many ways. Some viewed it as a failure while others viewed it as a success. Many view Reconstruction as a failure, but it should be viewed as a success because the educational system was improved, colored received their basic rights, and
Differences of Opinions between President Andrew Johnson, the so called Radical Republicans, and the Southern State’s resentment provided the country with a difficult challenge for Reconstruction after the Civil War. Without the leadership of Abraham Lincoln, who believed in pardoning the South, bringing the Confederates states back into the Union became a rocky and short-lived process. Many Historians call the reconstruction of the South a failure. Lincoln’s plan for reuniting the Union consisted of factors that ensured a full pardon for war crimes and a restoration of property with the exception of slaves for members of the individual Southern States as long as ten percent of the population of each state took an oath of loyalty to the Constitution
In the process of the rebuilding the South, there was an introduction of a new set of challenges. In 1865 and 1866, President Andrew Johnson administration passed some restrictive state legislatures called “black codes” so they could control the labor and some of the behavior of the former slaves and the other African Americans. The North was outraged about these codes. Radical Reconstruction
The North's neglect was a huge end to reconstruction. According to document C there was a panic in 1873 from corruption in Ulysses Grant's administration. In the end the North became less invested in the South and started focusing in their own political affairs (document C). “The tide of public opinions in the North began to turn against Reconstruction policies.(document C)” The Northerner also did not show respect to the free blacks.
The Reconstruction, in my opinion, was a failure for it did not freed every man of color even though the Thirteen amendment formally abolished slavery; in the antebellum years and with the assassination of President Lincoln, the road to Reconstruction took a different road. Moreover, the Southern states were required to take a bow of loyalty to the Nation and abolish slavery before being readmitted to the Union. However, in the mid-west states black codes were stablished to regulate the migration of free African-Americans, while the black codes established in Southern States were an attempt to suppress the freedmen and force them into labor for low to no wages. Also, African- Americans were restricted on property ownership, business management
The period right after the civil war can be characterized as an active period, fraught with policy and action with the purpose to consolidate the nation. Congress and the president of the united states approached this reconstruction era differently. New definitions for the status of African Americans arose from the ashes of the war, quantified by the ratification of the 13th 14th and 15th amendments. Consequently, there was a adverse southern reaction to this change that led to several antiblack protocols, especially exemplified by the Jim Crow system Considering this historical information, one can see that the nation was in fact not successful in rebuilding the relationship between Americans of African and European ancestry.
Although many attempts were made to prioritize freedom and equality for all, these values were undermined by racist Southerners who wouldn’t accept equality. In the end, Reconstruction had failed and former slaves endured another hardship akin to slavery. However, Reconstruction still could have prospered. There are multiple events that, if they had occurred, Reconstruction would not have failed. For example, had the government continued to fund the Freedmen’s Bureau, then the South would have legislated their discriminatory laws much later, if not at all.
The North was sick of being told that they were not protecting blacks in the South and neglected them. The South killed Reconstruction because of their resistance over the North’s help, and their corrupt ideas for reconstructing the
The Reconstruction period, one of the most controversial periods in American history, During the Reconstruction majority of the blacks were defenseless given the new state constitutions were incorporated by different challenges such as prejudiced literacy tests and poll taxes. At the end of the Civil War, the South beaten and there land destroyed, the destruction was tremendous, and the old social and economic order that was established on slavery depleted completely. The Confederate states had to be reformed to their positions in the Union. The free slaves in the south had to be well-defined.
In the period of reconstruction, there was a lack of racial equality and racism towards blacks. The 13th amendment abolished slavery, with the exception of allowing it as a punishment for a crime (“Thirteenth Amendment” 19). Although it abolished slavery, there was still a lack of equality towards blacks. The Black Codes were state laws in the south, that were implemented in 1866. These laws limited the rights of African Americans and were
The reconstruction period was a failure because African Americans, mainly males, were not treated with equality although the constitution said that the they were free and had the right to vote, be educated and had the right to liberty, life and the pursuit to happiness. Organizations, like the KKK, were created to harm freed slaves and their families. Laws were created such as the Black Codes restricting former slaves from their rights. African Americans endured a lot of violence over the years. “In Grayson, Texas, a white man and two friends murdered three former slaves because the wanted to ‘ thin the niggers out and drive them to their hole’”.
President Johnson gave a pardon to all ex-confederates. He also gave all land the government had taken over back to its previous owners. Which turned the north against Johnston. Congressional reconstruction is when the radical republicans basically took over President Johnsons reconstruction plan because they were appalled about the black codes. They wrote and passed the 14th amendment that gave African Americans the right to vote.
It all depends how you look at it. Laws that were set up weren’t always followed correctly, but laws were still being set up to protect African Americans rights. It must have been a success because now today, they are known as citizens and have the right to vote. But then again, the rise of the Klu Klux Klan and other white supremacy groups, in combination with the Black Codes, began to intimidate freed slaves and push back their civil liberties. For me, the Reconstruction was a
