The South killed Reconstruction most by their resistance against the North. Reconstruction started after the Civil war between 1865-1876. During the Civil War, the North and South battled, (The North won) and the South laid in ruins. The United States was willing to let the South back in under some conditions, and that marked the day Reconstruction started. During the Reconstruction era, the South resisted the North’s help and Reconstruction died. Resistance means to oppose an offer or an offering. Southern resistance killed Reconstruction socially, economically, and politically. The South killed Reconstruction socially in the South by allowing a group called the KKK to take control and harm citizens. The Klu Klux Klan (KKK) was a group of white southerner men who publicly tortured or brutally harmed blacks and republicans for several reasons. They wanted an …show more content…
Northerners lost interest in the South and their problems. “Weary of the ‘Negro Question’ and sick of ‘Carpet-bag’ government, many Northern voters shifted their attention....” (Document C). The North was tired of being asked the Negro question (where blacks being protected in the South) and having to worry about the corrupt government in the south. This quote is explaining that the North decided to go elsewhere and deal with other problems. The South decided to continue to fight about the ‘Carpet-Bag’ government and resisted the North’s help when it was offered. Reconstruction slowly died when the South kept resisting the help from the North. In the South, people such as the KKK took control of the South and the North got sick of it. Southerners resisted help and decided to use an corrupt government and ideas in the South. The North was sick of being told that they were not protecting blacks in the South and neglected them. The South killed Reconstruction because of their resistance over the North’s help, and their corrupt ideas for reconstructing the
Reconstruction was in process because of the war. The Civil war destroyed much of the south. In many groups it was not wanted such as the KKK. The KKK was a group against equal rights throughout African Americans. Other groups supported the Reconstruction such as Freedmen, African Americans who were freed during the war, and Carpetbaggers, people who went south to help the reconstruction in the south.
Who Killed Reconstruction People arguing and Americans dying, what’s next? The death of the rebuilding of America happened next. Who killed the Reconstruction of the United States? I believe that Northern neglect killed Reconstruction because they were more worried towards their corrupt government and Blacks being in the government then they were on rebuilding their country.
Carpetbaggers were northerners that went South to help Reconstruction efforts and freedmen. The Scalawags were Southern whites who supported Reconstruction. Radical Republicans were congressmen that supported African-American citizenship and punishment for former confederates. The KKK (Ku Klux Klan) didn't like the former slaves freedom or Reconstruction. The North put the army in the South to hold elections for new state governments and protect the freedmen.
The Reconstruction was unsuccessfull because of some important reasons. First, the South was still aracist part of the United States because they created the Jim Crow Laws, what means that the people who lived and administratedthe South were not intelligent. The second example is that Abraham Lincoln, who started and incentivated the Reconstruction, was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, so it made the Reconstruction process to be less efective. Finally, the last problem was the Solid South, it is a name that the South recieved because it was a solid white, solid racist and solid Democrat, what means that they were not able to support black people. Concluding, all of these examples shows why the Reconstruction was unsuccessfull
The North believed it shouldn't. However, the South’s economy was agriculturally based and they needed slaves to work on plantations in order for their economy to thrive. Without the slaves the south would be in a major crisis. The South was debating leaving and becoming their own country, But the North has to convince them to stay and somehow get rid of slavery at the same time.
When the union won the civil war in 1865 it gave millions slaves their freedom but there was a bigger process in rebuilding the south. As Andrew Johnson in 1865 new southern state leaders passed “Blacks Codes” to control the behavior of former slaves and blacks. Many people in the north were very upset about these codes. since the North was very upset with this indecent that happened. It wore away their supporter known as the presidential reconstruction and led to victories of the radical parts of the republican party.
The north wanted to to abolish slavery they felt like it was wrong although the argument the south had was the north didn’t need to worry about slaves due to the profit they were making off factories and manufacturing. Slavery was the backbone of the South’s economy. Although, money wasn’t the only reason whites restricted blacks for equal opportunities. Enforcing Jim Crow laws and Black codes simply was a result of hate and animosity most whites in the south had towards blacks.
The south was starting to get tired of the north because of how different their political views were. The north wanted to abolish slavery for a multitude of reasons, which include moral obligations, job opportunities for immigrants, and religious obligations. The south wanted to keep slavery because on top of being the main industry in the south, owning slaves was also part of someone's reputation in that time. Without slaves you were basically nothing in the south. The first example of how polarized the political scene was is with the "Southern Chivalry" cartoon (Document E).
Who killed Reconstruction: The North or South? Following the civil war, the south killed the reconstruction of the United States. (Reconstruction was putting the country back together after the Civil War) There are many reasons why, the south slowed down the reconstruction of the United States, the main reason was freedmen were not seen as equals to the white.
While racial attitudes and “Reconstruction weariness” contributed to the collapse of Reconstruction efforts, the use of violence against whites and blacks combined with the belief in white supremacy played the
During the late 1800s, because the South had been decimated by the end of the Civil War, .the Reconstruction Period was initiated to aid the South’s recovery. Although the Civil War did abolish slavery and unify the North and the South, the war not resolve racial prejudice, the South’s damage, and the African Americans’ economic instability. The Reconstruction Period was initiated in order to prevent economic instability and the structural ruin, because since slavery was abolished, and the South was completely dependent on slaves, therefore slaves could not work for the South to maintain the economy, and slaves also could not fix up the damages done to the structures done to the South during the war. By starting the Freedmen’s Bureau and passing
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
Reconstruction caused prejudice and inequality. To elaborate, the creation of the Ku Klux Klan and the Black Codes were both in the time period of reconstruction, which caused chaos and violence throughout the Union. One of the goals of reconstruction was to repair the economy in the South, because it depended on slavery, which was now illegal, due to the thirteenth amendment. The South’s economic system now depended on Sharecropping, which caused former slaves to be in constant debt and was unjust to the black society. The reconstruction time period, was a time of dispute between the Union.
Southern resistance killed reconstruction by having the Ku Klux Klan murdering
Racism’s Impact on Reconstruction While the issue of slavery evidently contributed to the divide that resulted in the American Civil War, it is debated whether prevailing ideals of racism caused the failure of the era following the war known as Reconstruction. With the abolishment of slavery, many of the southern states had to reassemble the social, economic, and political systems instilled in their societies. The Reconstruction Era was originally led by a radical republican government that pushed to raise taxes, establish coalition governments, and deprive former confederates of superiority they might have once held. However, during this time common views were obtained that the South could recover independently and that African Americans
