I had begun college the summer after I had graduated high school. I decided that it would be beneficial for me to attend a community college briefly to earn a higher grade point average. My motivation to attend college that summer was to start somewhere and improve myself. I am the first in my family to attend college, and I am glad to say so. After reading and analyzing, “Is College Worth It?” by David Leonhart and “Why College Isn’t for Everyone” by Chris Matthews, I have concluded that it is important and beneficial to attend college. Although, Chris Matthew made a compelling argument on why college is not for everyone such as, “ Up to 25% of college grads would probably be better off not pursuing a degree, yet nobody actually thinks they are going to be the ones for whom the investment doesn’t pay off.” Unfortunately, he previously had contradicted himself saying, “First, we don’t know for sure how much money this bottom quarter of degree holding earners would have made without their college education.” I disagree with Chris Matthews because although 25% of people who attend college do not become more “successful” than those who chose not to attend college, there a lingering prominent 75% that is out in the world being positively affected by the decision of attending college.
What Has Influenced Me To Attend A Post-Secondary Education Institution? As long as I can remember, I knew that college was going to be part of my future. That is because I always knew what my family expected out of me. College is not only important to me for the reason of making my parents proud, but for making sure that I create more out of myself, as well. With a higher education, I will have more job opportunities available, potentially be able to earn higher income, and obtain more useful life skills than somebody who does not have a college education. To begin, having a college education under my belt is important to me because I will have more opportunities for a job, after I complete my four years.
The reason I chose criminal justice as my major in college is, because when I was a kid I always wanted to solve crimes be an Investigator. Which led me into to the criminal justice field of study. I did not pursue a college education in til I was 26 year of age because I felt as if I was not ready for that challenge of a full time job and an full time student. Which resulted in me not going to school till my mid 20. I want to lay the foundation down for my family to grow and to let everyone know that i am the standard and our family that's where my motivation comes from.
College means alot to me and my family because my family's generation did not go to school because they had to stay home and help my grandparents. It's mostly important to me because my parents doubt me a lot that i won't make it far because the school only tells the the bad part of my attendance not the good part. It also means alot to us because not very many people in my family go to college so it makes us as a family proud of my success. As time goes on people you grow so fond of and look up to eventually pass away. Maya Angelou was as an amazing writer and influential civil rights activist in the 60’s before her death last year in 2014. However, she was so much more than just a writer to not only myself but to so many others around the world who she inspired with her controversial poetry, mesmerizing autobiographies, and impeccable charm. This is why if I could meet any person in the world and hold a 30-minute conversation with them, it would be with her. One of her most famous quotes is “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
I attended college right after college because I wanted to add to what I’ve already learned in high school. Also I knew what I wanted to do and be in life. The things that was taught in high school was still be fresh to me. I was one of the fortune students who qualified for TOPS and federal grants to pay for my pricy tuition. I think if I would have had to pay out of pocket for tuition, I would have been one of those who would have set out for a while before attending.
