The American Revolution was a major turning point in American society due to the political, social and economic reforms instigated after they gained their independence. After breaking away from their mother country, Britain, the Americans formed their ideal society in which the people held more power than the government. During this time women and slaves experienced more freedom within society. Women were allowed to serve in war and many slaves were set free. Because the United States was a new nation who just gained independence, they were still struggling to pay back the war debt thus there were less economic reforms than social and political. When America gained independence from Britain, they wanted to establish a government unlike Britain’s. …show more content…
The role of a woman was changed immensely. This was the beginning of gender equality. In Document A, a woodcut of a patriot women is displayed. The woman is wearing a male hat that is worn while fighting in war and holding a gun. In the background there is also a flag which shows women were allowed to partake in wars to fight for their nation. This woodcut represents equality and how women could play a more significant role in society than previously. Molly Wallace also supports the idea of gender equality in her valedictory address (Document J). While she addressed the young ladies’ academy of Philadelphia she says “ no one will deny, that we should be taught to read in the best manner. And if to read, why not speak ?” Wallace uses rhetorical questions to challenge the idea of not allowing women to speak. She defends female oratory and encourages educational reforms in order to prove men and women should be equal. There were drastic changes for slaves as well. Slaves began to be freed and some states in the north even banned slavery. The northwest ordinance was passed in 1787 which forbid neither slavery nor involuntary servitude in the northwest. If a slave escaped its original state, they were sent back. The government encouraged anti slavery in the north. The loyalist also experienced a significant change in society. After the American revolution, loyalist were disliked by the Americans. In the Pennsylvania packet of 1779 (Document B) it states “never let them return to this happy land - never let them taste the sweets of that independence which they strove to prevent. Banishment, perpetual banishment should be their lot”, which shows the American’s hatred toward the Tories who remained loyal to the king before and after the revolution. The Tories were forced to leave America because they fought so hardly against the idea of freedom and independence and America started
The moment American colonies declare independence in 1776, they became outlaws and disconnected from the British Empire no longer could a text Sam no longer could a profit for them no longer with the forces send their product products across the sea. The British heavily taxed their colony of America with ridiculous taxation of their people , since they declare independence they had a voice within their government stating how much should they be taxed as a people with interstate.
“Don't fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.” This quote was written by Captain John Parker in 1775 about the American Revolution. The American Revolution had a lot of causes leading up to writing the Declaration of Independence. There were many causes leading up to this but some important ones are taxes, the battles, and the 1st and 2nd Continental Congress. Taxes were a big cause in the American Revolution.
Soon the Americans stopped obeying by Great Britain’s laws all together. The Americans never imagined breaking free from the British government until the repeal of the Stamp Act. With this being said, the British political objectives
In 1775 to 1800, American revolution essentially transformed American society overall in politically, socially and economically. When the U.S earned its independence from Great Britain. people started wondering how, what, who should run it new unified country. It’s first form of government was the Articles of confederation that was ineffective. Just after the constitution was put in place in 1787 that was brought by the wealthy, powerful at the time.
The Americans stood their ground against the British loyalists, granted religious freedoms to citizens, and took a stand against the abusement of the government. The Americans were still at war with Britain for independence, but there were still loyalists among them. The Americans wanted the British loyalists out because they didn’t want them corrupting their freedom. “- Send them to the island of Britain; there let them drink the cup of slavery and eat the bread of bitterness all the days of their existence-”(Doc B). They took their stand against Britain by leaving, and did not allow any of them to remain in their independent society.
Once the American people realized that the true religious power resided in their own hands, rather than in the hands of the Church of England, they applied the same concept to the political power and decided it no longer belonged to the English monarch. The people now had a will for self-governance and wanted to get out from under the control of the British. Which they successfully did on July 4,
After the revolutionary war, the Americans believed in the system that was created by the country’s founders which was influenced by the pre-existing British government. However, the British constitution violated rights and it was clear that there was an abundance of abuse of power, therefore a war broke out. In addition, colonists were taxed heavily. This is when the American colonists decided they were going to diverge from the British government. The First Continental Congress was assembled, which resulted in the creation of the Declaration of Independence.
Since the late 1760s colonists living in America had been struggling with Britains new restrictions placed on them. They tried to fix the relationship with Britain but it was to no avail. More than half of the colonies just wanted to break away and make their own government rather than continue to struggle with the mother country. The colonies couldn't do as they pleased because the couldn't get to a definite answer as to what people wanted. Some colonies apposed to the thought of splitting away from Britain because they would need to build a brand new government that would work well enough to protect them.
The American Revolution in 1775-1783, was a fight for independence between the 13 colonies and the British. Events such as the Boston Tea Party, Stamp Act, and the Tea Act led to the increased tensions amongst the British and the Americans. In order to persuade the free blacks and slaves to fight for the American freedom, they offered them freedom from their masters’. However, it did not always have the slaves best interest at heart. The American Revolution served the interests of the American people to a great extent more so than the free blacks and slaves because they gained or retained freedom without joining the services.
Prior to the Declaration of Independence our country was made up of colonists living under the rule of the British Empire. These colonists were tired of living under
America’s Right to Independence The British set up and maintained full control over the colonies by the mid to late 1700s. Colonists weren 't happy with the way they were being ruled and therefore they felt they had the right to declare independence. A multitude of events led to the desire of being separate from Britain. Many argue that the colonists were in the right for splitting from Britain since they weren 't treated properly.
The American Revolution was a major conflict in the new world in which people fought for self-government, constitutional rights and independence from the British. Throughout the revolution, the 13 colonies that existed in that period were able to change their social, political and ideology approaches. However, the American colonists began to feel betrayed by the English government based on the multiple acts that were passed during the revolution. In order to comprehend why colonists were taking sides, we have to look back at the events that lead to their current beliefs. After their victory in the seven years war, the British government had to pay back a huge war debt.
The British government was not looking for the best of the people. They were only thinking about what they wanted; the government was not interested in what the people wanted so they decided to make decisions on their own, which resulted in changes that form the United States today. Because of this, they were justified in rebelling and declaring independence. One reason why the colonists decided to rebel and declare independence was because of taxation.
Others had business interests in England and knew that English trade was important to their economy, and some government officials and Anglican clergy in American remained loyal to British after the war. Still many American didn’t want independence until 1776 but rather they longed for Salutary Neglect. Famous Loyalist includes Benedict Arnold a general in the Continental Army who went to fight for the British and Thomas Hutchinson, a governor of Massachusetts colony. However, British taxation, as well as the restriction expanding into the western land, leads the colonist to cut any economic, political and financial tie with Great Britain. The Enlightenment ideas, Natural rights movements, and other factors show the colonist it is a common sense for the colonist to have Revolution against Britain.
Although this was a big step towards emancipation, the Northwest Ordinance also stated that any slave that escaped to the Ohio territory was to be returned to their master (Doc. H). The Revolution also brought social change. The Loyalists
