But why did he, Al Capone, became the man as we know him today? As I said, Capone was from a respectable and professional family. His father, Gabriele, was one of the thousands of Italians who arrived in New York in 1894. He was a educated man, 30 years old and from Naples where he earned a living as a barber. His wife, Al Capone's mother, Teresa was bringing up two sons: 2-year old son Vincenzo and infant son Raffaele, but she was also pregnant.

He was extremely famous for bootlegging. He actually made 60 million dollars every year by selling illegal liquor. He caused a ruckus in the 1924 mayoral election in Cicero. Johnny Torrio and Al had moved to Cicero because of the election of a new mayor in Chicago who wanted to remove corruption from the city. Now, for the election in Cicero, Al and Johnny were going to do whatever was necessary to have their candidate elected.

From 1925 to 1930 Al Capone controlled Speakeasies, bookie joints, gambling houses, brothels, horse and race tracks, nightclubs, distilleries and breweries. He made approximately 100,000,000 a year from this. Although he was famous for his killings and crime he did many things for the poor.

Capone at the age of 14 dropped out and eventually met his partner and mentor the infamous Johnny Torrio. Giving him the greatest influence on what the gangster lifestyle was all about. Teaching Capone that he should remain respectable whilst running a illegal and dangerous business. Thus starting it all from his first murder for a friend that was assaulted in the street by a thug, shooting him dead in a bar. Another of Capone’s missions was bootlegging whiskey from the trail in Chicago.

There he moved in a house with his family. In Chicago, he became very close with a man named John Torrio in 1922. Torrio was highly ranked and was the boss of a mob. Capone and Torrio began working together and Capone became the manager of Four Deuces. This was a headquarters which served multiple purposes.
