In the historical fiction novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, a boy named Salva escaped from his village after the rebels attacked. Before the rebels took over Salva’s village he went to school everyday. Each day after school his mother would always be waiting for him at home with a bowl of warm milk. Before the Taliban took over Parvana’s town, it was a very beautiful city with restaurants, movie theaters, and shops.

Linda Sue Park guides us through the book A Long Walk to Water about a Sudanese refugee named Salva one of the only Lost Boys of Sudan that survived. Salva fled from his school when the war came to his part of the country. In A Long Walk to Water there were a few factors that made survival possible for Salva, support from loved ones, hope and perseverance, and opportunity. One factor that Salva survive was help and support from loved ones. In the novel Salva was scared and alone without his family after fleeing from school and into the bush.

About 120 people a day die from starvation in Southern Sudan. In A Long Walk To Water by Linda Sue Park Salva traveled across all over Southern Sudan. Also Salva had to walk that whole way with only one gourd on his back holding water that had to be saved and used with great care. The book “A Long Walk To Water”, features the main characters Salva and Nya. Salva had to escape South Sudan’s dangerous environment (1983 Sudanese civil war) and follow a group to one of Ethiopia's refugee camps. On the way, Salva experienced multiple deaths of people he was close to (his uncle and friend), so when he got to the refugee camp he had nobody. After moving through many refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, there was a program that picked groups of these refugees to live in America, and Salva was picked. In America, he lived with a host family in New York City but then finds out his biological family is still alive.

Then in 2003, the Sudan Government responded to an ongoing rebellion by starting a genocidal campaign that ended with 300,000 deaths and over 3 million Darfuris displaced. The United Nations were watching and sent 9,000 of the 26,000 needed troops and have also donated $500 million to the Darfur peacekeeping efforts. Wiesel said “It is so much easier to look away from victims” and “It is so much easier to avoid such rude interruptions to our work, our dreams, our hopes” (par. 8).

In 1983 a war began between northern and southern Sudan and about 2 million civilians were killed and more than 4 million people were forced to flee their homes, those people were called the Lost Boys of Sudan and were fleeing violence and afraid of being forced into. The Lost Boys of Sudan had to walk great distances with limited resources and by the time they all reached a refugee camp in Kenya only about 10,000 out of the original 26,000 survived. Despite the harsh environment of Southern Sudan, Nya is able to survive due to her hard work and her family working together.
