In the historical fiction novel A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, a boy named Salva escaped from his village after the rebels attacked. Before the rebels took over Salva’s village he went to school everyday. Each day after school his mother would always be waiting for him at home with a bowl of warm milk. Salva had to run away from his village and he was separated from his immediate family. During Salva's journey he met his uncle. He also made a friend, Mariel. Tragically, a short time after Salva met him, Mariel got eaten by a lion. Salva’s luck just kept getting worse. His uncle was shot right in front of Salva’s eyes. After the death of Salva’s uncle, the men that Salva was traveling with started acting mean to Salva because they had looked up to his uncle, but now that his uncle was dead the men thought that Salva would just slow the group down. Finally, after a lot of walking, Salva made it to the Itang refugee camp, only to be chased out by an army six years later. The army brought everyone to a river and started shooting. Luckily, a boy grabbed Salva’s neck, which brought Salva under the water. If this boy wouldn’t have done this the bullet that hit the boy would have instead hit Salva and Salva would have died. Salva traveled with a group of boys to another refugee camp called Kakuma. Salva hated Kakuma. It was in the middle of a desert, there were fences of barbed wire enclosing the camp and people would often sneak into the camp and steal from the refugees. Since Salva hated this camp so much he decided, after two years, to go to another camp called Ifo. There, Salva made another friend named Michael who taught Salva English and, also, how to play …show more content…
One of the first substantial challenges that Parvana faced was that the Taliban arrested her father and took him away because he went to college in England. Because the Taliban didn’t let women go outside alone, Parvana's family had no way of buying and getting food, and they never got fresh air, so they were always grumpy. Since women also weren’t allowed to work, Parvana's family had no way of making money. Because of all of these challenges that Parvana's family faced, her mother was often depressed and sat facing the wall on her toshak for a long time. One day Parvana's family had an idea to send Parvana out into the market dressed up as a boy. Looking like a boy, Parvana was able to bring her family outside so they could get the fresh air that they needed, which put them all in an improved mood. After a few days of working in the market, Parvana met a girl who had been in her class, named Shauzia. She was also dressed up as a boy so she could work. Parvana and Shauzia wanted to make extra money so they could buy small items to sell off of a tray. The only way that Shauzia could think of that would give them a lot of extra money would be to dig up graves. Parvana really didn’t want to do that, but she and her family needed the money so she did it anyway. Their plan worked and Parvana earned a lot more money selling small items off a tray. One afternoon, Parvana came
In Deborah Ellis’s The Breadwinner, Parvana is a young woman who must become a boy to get food for the family and I have decided to compare and contrast her to the courageous Harriet Tubman. She lives in a bombed out apartment with her five other family members. Her father was taken away by the surrounding Taliban because of his foreign education. The family has no choice but to cut Parvana’s hair and turn her into a boy so she can be the breadwinner.

Year of Wonders is set in Eyam, an actual village which was located in Derbyshire, England. Also known as the "plague village" for an outbreak of the Bubonic Plague in 1665 and 1666, the story of Year of Wonders is based off of this event. At the beginning of the book, Anna Frith is introduced to the readers as a house maid, mother of two young sons, and the narrator. Although she isn't a historical figure, through her eyes, the readers get to get an insight on what it was like living in the midst of a plague. As the story starts out, Anna is faced with the struggle of watching her friends (Anys and Mem) being accused by mobs of being witches because they are midwives who deliver newborns and use charms and herbs to heal the sick.
Although often used interchangeably, disease and illness differ fundamentally in their meanings and implications. Disease is the commonly thought of concept in which a person suffers due to a physiological or psychological ailment, while illness refers to a culmination of physical, emotional and social suffering of a person. Disease is perceived as the phenomena that affects an organism, while illness affects not only the patient but also their loved ones and community. This distinction is vividly apparent in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, in which Anne Fadiman relays the approaches to a Hmong child named Lia’s epilepsy by her family and her doctors as well as the tumultuous interaction between these caregivers. It is interesting to understand how Hmong culture and a doctor’s
In the short story " My favorite Chaperone" by Jean Davies Okimoto ,the main characters are the members of a Russian immigrant family adjusting to their life in America. We learn about them through the eyes and thougths of Maya, the teenager daughter trying to cope with the new life and culture , while having to maintain the old life and culture at home with her parents and her little brother Nurzhan, who is the only one who understands her. Maya 's life is far from the one of a normal American teenager, when her brother gets in trouble for fighting in school, she has to take care of the situation, not only because of the language but because her parents see her as responsible for him. On the other hand she gets in big trouble when her
Parvana, the protagonist from The Breadwinner a book by Deborah Ellis, is courageous. First of all, she was made into a boy to make money. She had to cut her hair, wear her old brother’s clothes and go out into the market everyday, thinking someone would see past her scheme. If a Taliban had caught her she probably would’ve been tortured and sent to jail. Additionally, she has the problem of going to the bathroom as a boy.
Me and Parvana have some similarities, but not many. One thing that we have in common is that we will, both look out for our families no matter what. Like before in the book, Parvana decided that she was going to still work at the market dressed as a boy for some extra money. One other reason me and Parvana are similar is because, we are both hardworking. I remember back in the book
“Parvana was very different...” Parvana went through a whole lot of change in this novel because she went from being a young girl who was educated and had a good life to being a person who had to change their physical appearance just to provide her family with food. “Parvana was one of the lucky ones”. Parvana was lucky because her parents were educated and they supported school for girl but most Afghans were not like this. Parvana was never meant to be outside “The Taliban had ordered all the girls in Afghanistan to stay inside their homes”.

Wallence, David Foster, “This Is Water”. Kenyon College Commencement Speech, 2005. In “This is Water”, the author David Foster Wallance introduces the idea of people being concern of what is revolving around them, causing the individual to avoid the fact they are responsible of their own actions and thoughts. In the process, Wallance claims that people live their life the way they think they should, because it has come to a point that everything they do becomes a routine.
Poverty is a key part of their lives, many people like Parvana and her family have become a penurious family. Meaning that she is very poor, with no male escort, She chooses to go to the market and provide for her family, she could be beaten, despite that, she has no choice in the matter. Although she knows she’s risking her life, Parvana also realizes that her family depends on her. Many females of any age have to encounter this, having no male figure suitable to play the role of an escort, they are left with very little
A relationship between a father and a son is a sacred bond, one created at birth and strengthened over time. This paternal relationship is core to the value of family, a likewise bond of faith and trust. Such bonds are tested during times of hardship and pain, seen most clearly during times of war. During the events of World War II, and the gruesome events of the Holocaust, this truth was never more true. Through works such as the memoir Night, by survivor Elie Wiesel, and the artistry of the 1997 film Life is Beautiful, directed by Roberto Benigni, these times of hardships are kept alive in common memory.
She changed because she had lost her father due to the Taliban taking him away. He was the only male that can take a female outside. Since his gone, Parvana had decided to transform into a male, “All right,” she said. “I’ll do it.” pp 68.
