Why Was The South Seceded To The Civil War Essay

Crittenden Compromise was an unsuccessful proposal created by Kentucky senator John. J. Crittenden on December 18th, 1860. It was the first proposal submitted to prevent the Civil War. This proposal was made for two reasons.

Southerners were willing to go above and beyond for the sake of their state, beliefs, and neighbors, and Lincoln’s elections pushed their resentment for the North over the edge. Another division between Southerners was the issue of secession. This issue was a monumental division among Southerners in South Carolina. The majority of South Carolinians wanted to secede, but some wholeheartedly opposed the idea. “At Fernandina I saw young men running up a Palmetto flag, and shouting a little prematurely, ‘South Carolina has seceded!’ ”

Some may say that Also, there were many northerners had slaves too. Slavery had been a State right for the southerners to have and they felt their right was violated. Slavery may have divided America but some may say slavery was not what caused the division and led to the Civil War. The South wanted power over their federal government so they could have the power to abolish federal laws they did not support. Southernern states’ rights struggle between federal government and individual stats over political power.

American history noted that the secession of the southern states was a reason for the Civil War. The Civil War had many men to die during the cause, less men died in the world war comparing them to the Civil War. Slavery was a cause for the southern states to secede and it could be considered as one of the major factors. Along with state sovereignty, economic, and political difference are amongst the list that caused the south to secede. Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina were the southern states that seceded and form a southern Confederacy.

From November 1860 to May 1861 we have had 11 of our Southern states secede from the United States of America. They threatened to secede if our current president Abraham Lincoln was elected into office. The reason all 11 states seceded is because they believe that the government was becoming too strong, and they didn’t want them to tell them how they could live and how they couldn’t. In other words they didn’t want the government to tell them if they could have slaves and if they couldn’t. The Southerners felt that if they stayed with the United states that the Northern states would begin to control them.

The South wanted to attain slavery and keep it alive this is why it was so traumatic to them. The Fights and leaders who were on different sides were coming up with new ways to defeat their opponent. The new tactics were hiding and ambushing instead of going face to face with the enemy. At fort sumter the Civil War.

The Civil War broke out due to southern slave states declaring their independence from the United States to form the Confederacy and states that did not was known as the Union. The main reason the Civil War occurred was over the issue of slavery. The debate about the future of slavery led to the south’s secession which led to war between the north and the south. Slavery became an important issue between the North and the South.

The south was starting to get tired of the north because of how different their political views were. The north wanted to abolish slavery for a multitude of reasons, which include moral obligations, job opportunities for immigrants, and religious obligations. The south wanted to keep slavery because on top of being the main industry in the south, owning slaves was also part of someone's reputation in that time. Without slaves you were basically nothing in the south. The first example of how polarized the political scene was is with the "Southern Chivalry" cartoon (Document E).

‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .

Many to this day ponder what was the main cause of the civil war. Secession from the Union was the primary cause of the Civil War because the south felt their only option was to secede in order to preserve slavery, making them feel their only option to protect themselves was War. One of the main reasons why the South decided to secede and go to war, was to preserve slavery, as they were afraid that the Union would exempt it. As defined, a civil war needs 2 sides in order to even define it as that, both obviously disagreeing on a topic that they felt they needed to threaten their countries' unity for.

This one was without a doubt the most important reason. The South had a huge success with selling cotton and people often owned huge plantations. The people who owned the farms hired slaves to farm and collect the cotton, that way they could make their cash. (Document A.)The North however wanted to abolish, or get rid of slavery. Fearful of losing their businesses, Texans decided to fight.

There were a few events preceding the South’s secession that were not directly related to the South’s secession. One of these events is the Adams-Onis treaty. This treaty gave Florida to the United States and changed the borders of the United States. Another event is the tariff of abominations. The events I believe were most responsible for the South’s secession were the Crittenden Compromise and the Charles Sumner speech and results.

The American Civil War was the war that ended slavery. The civil war was known as one of the bloodiest and deadliest conflicts the United States had ever seen. The loss of life was an estimated amount of 620,000 men. It lasted four years, from April 12, 1861, through May 9, 1865. However, while slavery was a major cause of the American Civil War, there were several other major factors.

There were three main causes of the civil war including slavery, sectionalism and secession. Slavery was a huge part of it and it led to the Missouri Compromise where any states below the border would be slave states and the anything north of that was free states.
