To Kill a Mockingbird Rough Draft
The State's Attorney has decided that Bob Ewell, of Maycomb County, Alabama, will be tried on the charge of first degree murder of Tom Robinson.
Although, Bob Ewell did not physically murder Tom Robinson, his actions lead to Tom Robinson's death. The definition of first degree murder is a willful and unlawful murder that is premeditated. Everyone would agree that first degree murder is unlawful and a threat to society, however; first degree murder does not have to be physical murder. A person can be charged with this degree of murder if they do something they know would lead to a person's murder, just as Bob Ewell did.
One of the reasons why Bob Ewell is being charged with first degree

During the court case, Bob Ewell was asked by Mr. Gilmer if he saw Mayella being raped by Tom Robinson, and he replied "yes, sir, I did." Mr. Gilmer also asked Mr. Ewell what he did when she saw her being raped, and he said that " I immediately ran to the sheriff, Mr. Heck Tate", yet again, another lie made up by Bob Ewell. By him lying like this, he was successful in covering up the fact that he was the one who beat up Mayella. Also, by his deceptiveness, he figured that he would be successful in getting Tom Robinson killed, whether him being in prison or the death. One other lie that Bob Ewell told during the court case that covered up his crime was lying about being able to write with both of his hands. Atticus asked Mr. Ewell to write his name down on a piece of paper, and he ended up using his left hand. This made Atticus more deceptive of Mr. Ewell because he was suspicious of him having a dominant left hand, much like the hand that was used to beat up Mayella. But of course, Bob Ewell being his usual self, said that "I can write with my right hand just as good as my left", which yet again, was another lie that led to the death of Tom
In addition, Atticus had also proven that Bob Ewell was left-handed. But, the jury concluded that Tom was guilty.
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 10 people have been executed for being responsible for a murder they did not commit. Five of those people, like Wood, were executed in Texas. This does not mean the state has not commuted punishments for defendants like Wood in the past. In 2007, then-Governor Rick Perry granted clemency to Kenneth Foster, who was originally sentenced to death for his role as the driver of a getaway car in a robbery that ended in the death of a law student.
In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He is well known for being a Christian man, but Mr. Ewell claims he saw him raping his daughter. I believe Tom Robinson is innocent because of the Ewell family history, lack of evidence, and he has a disability that causes a problem with the testimony. The Ewell family is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Bob Ewell is known for his violent actions and words.
Horace Gilmer's actions against Tom Robinson on the day of August 26, 1936. The reason he was on the prosecuting party was to represent Mayella Ewell on her accusations against Tom Robinson, her allegations played out as so, she claims she asked tom to come inside and help her destroy a cabinet, when he did she said she caught her off guard and raped her, and when he was in the middle of said act, he father Bob Ewell saw this through a window and ran to check on her then called the shariff Heck Tate, then in Toms claim he said that Mayella invited him in to fix a door and while he was looking for it she hugged him from behind and kissed him, this is when Bob Ewell had seen them through the window and he ran to Mayella and Tom and when he got there Tom had ran away. This left the jury confused and in need of a meeting, so they went out and met with each other and decided Tom Robinson was guilty, he was put into prison where he was shot trying to escape and
Tom Robinson’s Innocence In Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Robinson’s innocence is proven by Mayella’s injuries, Bob Ewell’s history, and lack of physical evidence. First of all, Mayella’s injuries are not consistent with Bob Ewell and Heck Tate’s testimonies. Bob and Heck both claim that Tom Robinson beat Mayella and her right eye was bruised.
Bob Ewell entered the office excited saying Heck needed to get out to the Ewells house quick, because some black person raped his daughter. Mr. Tate then drove to the Ewells estate and found Mayella Ewell lying in the middle of the floor in the front room beat up. Heck then helped Mayella up and asked her who had beat her up. Mayella told Sheriff Heck Tate that it was Tom Robinson who beat her up. Then Mr. Tate asked if Tom had taken advantage of her
In court Atticus disgraces Bob Ewell, by proving him a liar. Tom was found guilty and was shot trying to escape. Bob launches a personal vendetta onto anyone connected to the case. He attacks the children, injuring Jem, and inadvertently killing himself. 2.
Integrity is defined as the quality of having, living by, keeping, and defending one’s firm moral principles in all circumstances. Men throughout history have exhibited this trait. Martin Luther King, Jr., portrayed this quality when he led the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Integrity was also ubiquitous throughout the Bible. Joseph, a Biblical character, displayed this quality throughout his life of slavery in Egypt.
(Lee, pg. 177). Mr. Ewell did and when he grabbed the pencil and wrote with his left hand it showed everyone exactly what Atticus wanted it to show. With most of the injures obtained by Mr. Ewell’s daughter Mayella being on the left side of her body it showed that it was possible that Mr. Ewell beat his daughter and not Tom. It made even more sense when Tom was asked to stand and everyone saw that his left arm was nothing but a nub; which was from when he got it caught in Mr. Dolphus Raymond’s cotton gin when he was a boy. This section really shows how wise Atticus is because he brought up points about the case that no one even thought about but in the end were major points about the
Atticus Finch Strengths and Faults Atticus Finch is an excellent father to two amiable kids known as Jem and Scout. He is a lawyer in a small town called Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus has a lot of strengths but, he also has some faults.
In the argument between Mr.Gilmer and Atticus In to kill a mockingbird about Tom Robinson being found guilty for raping Mayella. There was impressive work of rhetorical analysis (Logos, Pathos, and Ethos). This argument takes place in a courthouse in Maycomb which if packed with the people of Maycomb. The argument between Atticus and Mr.Gilmer was about Tom Robinson to find out if he truly raped and abused Mayella. In the argument between them both used Logos, Ethos, and Pathos.
I believe Mr. Heck Tate’s Testimony because he does not have a reason that he should lie, and it does not conflict with evidence presented later. He told the truth because there were no reasons to lie in his case. Bob Ewell says that he heard Mayella screaming from the Ewell house and ran inside. When he did he saw Tom Robinson on Mayella, and Tom fled the scene.
Everyone in the courthouse on the night of the trial knew that Tom Robinson was innocent. But at the end of the trial, that didn’t matter. Tom Robinson was a black man, and because of this difference that should not make a difference, he had no say over the family of whites, the Ewells. Tom Robinson was wrongly convicted of raping and beating Mayella Ewell. The evidence of the case leads to the conclusion that Bob Ewell, Mayella’s father was responsible for this misfortune.
For instance, determination in Bob Ewell is involved in a variety of situations throughout the story. Bob Ewell is determined to be victorious in the case between his daughter, Mayella, and Tom Robinson. He is there for her to guide her through it alongside their lawyer, Mr. Gilmer. It is thought to be that Tom Robinson rapes Mayella Ewell one day. Bob Ewell arrives to the scene and sees Tom raping Mayella which leads to where Tom panics and runs off into the distance.
In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Lee took the minor character of Mayella Ewell and made her into a sympathetic role to her readers in a latent way. Mayella's life at home is told through the story's background and foreshadowing references. This is how Lee made Mayella memorable enough to the reader to know who she is and her family situation without needing her point of view of her side of the story. Once Mayella enters the storyline, her actions will become understandable to the reader and generate sympathy. One way Lee makes Mayella a sympathetic character is how before entering her into the story, one of Mayella's younger siblings was introduced.
