Mr. Heck Tate was the first witness to testify at the trial. He says that Bob Ewell told him that Mayella was being raped, so he rushed to the scene. When he arrived at the Ewell property, Mayella was badly injured, with bruises on her arms and face, and there were finger marks on her throat. He notes that most of injuries were on the right side of her face, meaning that the beater was likely left handed. He also notes that no doctors brought to examine Mayella despite her injuries.
I believe Mr. Heck Tate’s Testimony because he does not have a reason that he should lie, and it does not conflict with evidence presented later. He told the truth because there were no reasons to lie in his case.
Bob Ewell says that he heard Mayella screaming from the Ewell house and ran inside. When he did he saw Tom Robinson on Mayella, and Tom fled the scene. He said the room was all slung about like there was a fight, and that Mayella was beat up. The contacted Heck and said that Tom raped Mayella. When Heck arrived Mayella was beaten, but the doctors were not contacted as Bob did not think there was a need to.

First, Tom is later shown in trial to be trustworthy and not have anything to hide. Second, Bob is well known to be an alcoholic and abusive person, meaning that he likely beat Mayella himself out of anger. It would explain why he does not call for a doctor, and this cemented by the fact that he does not take enough care of his kids. Third, Bob claims that Tom beat Mayella face on the right side, but Tom's left arm was unusable from when it was caught in a cotton
When it is time for the trial to take place, Atticus forbids the kids from coming to it. This does not stop the children, however, as they show up and sit in the colored balcony with Calpurnia's, (the maid) pastor, Reverend Sykes. During the trial, Atticus demines the Ewell's credibility by proving that they are lying. During Tom's testimony, Atticus shows that Mayella was the one that advanced on Tom, and when Bob Ewell found this, he beat her. Atticus shows this through a few ways: First, he asks Tom Robinson to stand up and it is obvious that he could not have done it to Mayella; his left arm is a lot shorter than his right arm.
Heck Tate, Maycomb’s sheriff, is a good guy, who’s job is to maintain law and order inside the town. Being the sheriff, it is his job to follow the evidence and trace it back. When Miss Mayella Ewell is “abused” by a strong black man, she says that the attacker was Tom Robinson. “So I went down to Robinson’s house and brought him back. She identified him as the one, so I took him in.
The main characters aren’t the only ones who contribute to the innocent perspective of Maycomb. Dill, the best friend of both Scout and Jem uses his emotions and past experiences to relate to the hatred black people like Tom Robinson face on a daily basis. During the Tom Robinson trial, Dill gets upset over the way Tom is treated by Mr. Gilmer: “This was as much as I heard of Mr. Gilmer’s cross examination, because Jem made me take DIll out. For some reason DIll had started crying and couldn’t stop; quietly at first, then his sobs were heard by several people in the balcony” (Lee 265). Dill later tells us that he didn’t appreciate Mr. Gilmer’s attitude toward Tom Robinson.
Atticus proves that Bob Ewell is left-handed by having him sign his name, while there is no way for Tom to be left-handed due to his crippled left arm. “His left hand was fully twelve inches shorter than his right, and hung dead at his side”(211) Therefore, there is no way that Tom Robinson could have struck Mayella with his left hand. Second, Mayella’s and Bob's stories don’t match up.
Bob Ewell intimidated Mayella to lie on the witness stand, which led the jury to believe that she was telling the truth. You could tell that Mayella is under the intimidation of her father when she is testifying: “Mayella looked at her father, who was sitting with his chair tipped against the railing He sat up straight and waited for her to answer.” (Lee 245). As they were interrogating Mayella, she would constantly look at her father, as if she was waiting for approval. This implies that her father told her what to do and what to say.
The sheriff 's testimony said that Mrs. Ewell had a bruise under her right
Even though the jury found Tom Robinson guilty of raping Mayella Ewell, in that matter Atticus Finch, lawyer defending Tom Robinson, said that Tom Robinson was not guilty because he only has one arm and there is no way that Tom Robinson was able to hurt her while Bob Ewell is perfectly fine and
”Lee 238 this is saying that he could be left handed and could be the one the abused Mayella. This might cause the unbiased audience to feel and think that Bob could have done it. Another reason is that Bob did not call the doctor when he found Mayella the evidence is that in the book it says “It wouldn’t dress any, Mr. Finch.
During trial, it is revealed that Mayella is verbally, physically, and sexually abused by her father. Mr. Ewell intimates Mayella by tipping his chair against the railing when she tries to give them an honest answer to what he really does [Doc B]. In addition, according to Tom Robinsons testimony, Mr. Ewell called his daughter a “Whore”, Threatened to kill her, which is clear verbal Abuse , Also Mayella says “What her papa do to her don’t count”, this means the actions she tried to do with Tom Robinson is the same actions Mr. Ewell does on Mayella, intimating sexual abuse[Doc B]. Finally Atticus closing statement says Mayella has been beaten “Savagely”. This means that her father beats her [Doc B].
So Atticus knows that Bob Ewell is the one who hits Mayella and not Tom. Mr. Finch asks Mayella if Bob has ever hit her and she responds with, “No, I don’t recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me” The next act of revenge shown is about Jem. Jem passes through Mrs. Dubose house from being downtown with Scout.
I am reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and I am on page 304. The book is about Scout, her brother Jem, and their friend Dill who are growing up learning about segregation, as in Tom Robinson’s court case. In this journal I will be questioning and evaluating. Why would Bob and Mayella lie? The first reason the Ewells lie is to protect themselves.
Bob Ewell feels that Atticus have made him look bad in front of the town, and he wants revenge. Ewell follows Atticus to Tom house and spits in his face. Days later someone takes Scout’s shoes and her dress, now she has to walk home dressed like a ham from a Halloween party. Jem hears something following them, and then Scout hears the same noise. Its Bob Ewell, he grabs Jem and hurts his left arm, then knocks Scout to the ground.
Naael Naqvi Ms. Harding English I - 1st Period 12/4/17 Dishonest Indictment Raised in a toxic environment, Mayella Ewell is faced with numerous challenges such as her father, Bob Ewell, and an absence of self-worth. With this stress upon her, she wrongfully accused Tom Robinson of rape. Throughout the trial of she, it is proven to be evident after all the witness have spoken, that Mayella is more so a victim, than the perpetrator in the novel. It can be proven that Mayella is the victim, as she is placed in a tough situation with many different types of pressure. The most prominent of her issues is that her father coerces her and supposedly abuses her.
Mayella Ewell is a victim. Mayella is a victim of her father, Bob Ewell, because he is an alcoholic that abuses her. During the Tom Robinson trial, Atticus proved Bob Ewell to be left-handed. Based on Bob and Heck Tate’s testimonies, Mayella’s right eye was blackened
When Tom went inside Mayella attacked him. Mayella 's father, Bob Ewell, came home, saw what was going on, and got really aggressive. Tom ran while Bob beat Mayella for what she
