Imagine a confederate flag as our country’s flag and slavery still being present in society. This could have been the result of a Southern victory in the Civil War. However, the North defeated the South and shaped today’s government. The North won the Civil War due to the advancements and production of weapons. The Civil War was fought between the Northern States, known as the Union Army, and the Southern States, known as the Confederate Army. The Civil War started on April 12, 1861 and lasted until mid-1865. The Civil War arose out of deep disagreements regarding everything from State’s rights, but the primary cause was the contrasting views regarding slavery. While the Southern States supported continued slavery, the Northern States wanted to end this practice. Many scholars believe the Civil War was due to the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860, who supported the North, causing the Southern States to split from the United States. During this period, the Southern States considered Jefferson Davis to be their President. Although the Northern Army had advantages in terms of financing and size of the army, it was their superior weapons advancements that won the war. The Southern States were mostly an agricultural economy, which limited their ability to produce weapons on a large scale. The Northern …show more content…
Other forms of weapons such as swords, ammunition and explosives also played a significant role in the Civil War. The Northern Army used advanced explosives like land mines and hand grenades to gain an advantage on the Confederate Army. The factories in the North, many of which were converted from food and other textiles, were resourceful in producing grenades out of materials like used artillery shells and glass. The Civil War also saw the development and use of the Minie Ball. The ball-shaped bullet expanded once expelled from the chamber, helping to increase both range and
The North had many advantages one of these was Abraham Lincoln, the north also had a larger population, and a large advantage at 5-to-two in military power. Not only were they large in population the Union was also very wealthy and controlled shipping. The North also had industrial power, more railroads, and more land. As you can see the United States had many more advantages than the Rebels, but they also have quite a few disadvantages. One disadvantage was that the Northern armies had little motivation because they weren't fighting for a cause.
The North also produced 17 times more cotton than the South, 30 times more leather goods, and more essentials to the war. All and all, the South was seriously out supplied by their counterparts, and still nearly pulled off the upset. This is the first reason why Robert E. Lee is the greatest general of the Civil War. Reason 2: The Confederates had much less men than the Union and Lee nearly still won Going into the war, the Union were the
During the Civil War there were many differences besides slavery. This war had the most American deaths than all of the wars the U.S. has been in combined! The south seceded from the north for slavery and other less important reasons. The North had more of nearly everything like navy, soldiers, horses, and food, while the south had slaves, cotton, and donkeys/mules. Throughout the war many great leaders rose and fell, battles fought, and great and terrible outcomes.
One of the primary reasons why the North gained victory during the Civil War was mainly due to the presence of many industries as well as factories. These industries provided not only funds but also the weapons which include guns. However, unlike the Northern states, the Confederates lacked industries for they primarily dealt with cotton growing, as a result, during the war they lacked advanced ammunition supplies. According to statistics, the Northern states enjoyed approximately 81% of America’s industrial capacity as well as 80% of the capital and bank. Presence of both capital and bank aided in providing the required finances for funding the war; hence, the Northern states were sufficiently well-off to engage in the war and also maintain its troops, war weapons, and food.
The Civil War was a battle of great importance to our history of the United States. On April 12th, 1861 this battle broke out between the Union States, North, and the Confederate States, such as the South. The Civil War took place all throughout the United states, and did not come to an end until the Union won the war on May 9, 1856. So, our question of “What caused the Civil War”, comes with three important answers. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were Economic, Social, and Political differences.
Historian, George Frederickson addresses the blue over the gray and sources of success and failure in the Civil War. He emphasizes the North’s advantages providing many plausible explanations of why the North won. He mentions the North’s advantages in manpower, resources, and industrial capacity. The North had an excess of three to one readily available manpower. For every southern industrial worker, the North had a factory or workshop.
The North had many advantages. They beat the South in population they could draw soldiers from. The North had 22 million citizens where the South only had 5.5 million citizens. The North could transport supplies and people faster because of their roads, canals, and railroads. However the South disconnected from itself with barely any railroads and hard to move soldiers and goods from place to place.
Uncompromising differences between the South (Confederacy) and the North (Union) created a civil war that lasted five years. During this war, Abraham Lincoln was president. His election led to the secession of many Southern states. After refusing to recognize the Confederacy as its own nation, the American Civil War commenced in 1861. The three main causes of the Civil War between the North and the South were industrial and agricultural economies, politics, and slavery.
Civil War The Civil War was from 1861-1865 . During the Civil War Abraham Lincoin was the president of the United States of America . In the South the president was Jefferson Davis not of the U.S.A but of the Confederate States of America . The North won the Civil War because they had more guns , men , and more ammo .
Keeping troops supplied with their ammunition and food rations was of great concern to the North while fighting in the Southern territory. Railroads were the second most important factor next to waterways for supplies to support the Northern troops. Not only food but weapons including rifled artillery, guns, and even submarines came in these train trips. The South had great plans on how to win the Civil War, but the strengths and weaknesses had an impact on how they fiercely fought. The largest advantage for the South is that they were fighting in their homeland which meant they were familiar with the land better than the North.
The final reason the Union won the war over the confederacy is they had much more advanced techology and better thansportation. Since railroads became such an important new technology in the war the Union having a massive railroad to transport troops, medical supplies, and food made it a huge advantage compared to the small railroad the confederacy had. The North also had the telegraph, which was another technological advantage over the South. Some ways the Union used this was that military leaders were able to communicate in real time using the telegraph. They had updated information on enemy troop strengths and
As the antebellum Americans made several advancements in technological innovations, this helped the North overcome the South agriculturally. With the new inventions such as the cotton gin, the reaper, the steel tipped plow, and new ways to revive unfertile soil, the North had many advantages to aid them while they were gone to war. As these new inventions were created each had an impact on how and why the differences between the North and South came to be. Although the creation of the cotton gin by Eli Whitney improved the South’s economy it also made the South more dependent on slaves.
Raining bullets, charging enemies, fear, hunger, and impending doom. Who would put themselves under so much pressure? Why would Texans fight in the Civil War? After President Abraham Lincoln’s election in 1860, many Southern states saw trouble brewing.
The North had many advantages over the South the helped them win the civil war. These reasons included a central leadership, more resources, and recruiting black men for their armies. These reasons helped the North win the civil war and play a big part in how successful they would be. With having advantages, better tactics when fighting, and also a higher population, the North would use strategic planning to fight the South and ultimately win the civil war.
One, in particular, would be the North’s abundance of soldiers. Edwin C. Bearss claims, “The South lost the Civil War because of a number of factors. It was inherently weaker in the various essentials to win a military victory in the North. The north had a population of more than twenty-two million people to the South’s nine and a half million of whom four and a half million were slaves”. With the North having more people to go to war with, it was clear their army would be able to defeat the South.
