"Whenever I hear anyone arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally" (Abraham Lincoln). The American Civil War was a war between the Northern (Union) and Southern (Confederates) parts of the United States. The war was a fight for slavery, the South pro-slavery, and the North against slavery. Most people know that the Union had succeeded in their battle with the Confederates which explains why slavery has ceased to exist in the United States, but do they know how and why the Union had triumphed over the Confederates? Even though the Confederates had a much greater area of land making it hard to invade, the north won the civil war because of the sheer number of resources, weapons, and men that they had.
Part of the reason that the Union won the American Civil War was their advantage in resources such as weapons, railroads, and other supplies that are essential to winning a war. The Northern United States held more than 70% of the nation's rail lines, making for easier transport. Easier transport during war usually translates to success when such an advantage like this is present. Furthermore, the Union had an excellent navy and a large

Lee). Robert E. Lee, the Commander of the Confederate States Army surrendered to the Union in 1865. Even though many people believe the Confederacy had better leaders, the South lost the war because of a lack of resources, weapons, and men. The South had very little factories to produce weapons, railroads, and other supplies causing the Confederates to have a very small amount of these resources. The ratio of guns between the south and the north was 1 to 32, 1 being the south. Weapons are a necessary part of war, and with such a huge difference between you and your opponent, it is very unlikely you will succeed. The South lost the Civil War because of a lack of resources due to the insignificant number of
The Confederate States had no means of security and economic stability to last the entire war, which gave an advantage to the Union. After four years of hardship, the Union emerged victorious.
During the first half of the Civil War, the South had the upper hand and the Confederate army was taking most of the victories. The leadership of General Lee was a force to be reckoned with and the South had the advantage of knowing the geography and having the ability to quickly obtain fresh reinforcements and supplies, since most of the battles were fought locally. Northern generals had failed to stop the Southern advances and things were looking bleak for the Union. Fortunately, General Ulysses S. Grant was granted the authority to make the major military decisions, and as a result of his relentless pursuit of the Confederate army, the Union won the Civil War.
Even though the Union won the war, it was not inevitable because of the South’s political and military leadership. Superior leadership is often seen as the main reason for the Union victory. However, the Confederacy was well led. Although President Lincoln was more superior to Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee thought Davis was a good fit for the South. Davis worked hard and did his best to motivate Southerners.
One of the primary reasons why the North gained victory during the Civil War was mainly due to the presence of many industries as well as factories. These industries provided not only funds but also the weapons which include guns. However, unlike the Northern states, the Confederates lacked industries for they primarily dealt with cotton growing, as a result, during the war they lacked advanced ammunition supplies. According to statistics, the Northern states enjoyed approximately 81% of America’s industrial capacity as well as 80% of the capital and bank. Presence of both capital and bank aided in providing the required finances for funding the war; hence, the Northern states were sufficiently well-off to engage in the war and also maintain its troops, war weapons, and food.
A grueling three-year battle between the North and the South ended with a drawn-out victory for the North with the Civil War being the bloodiest war in American history. However, there is far more to how this battle was won to bring the South back to rejoin the Union and to abolish slavery. The importance of the bullet, telegraph, and railroad system are the three biggest and surprising factors that lead to the North’s victory. First, the major game-changing discovery was the manufacturing of the mini ball.
This was advantageous for them because it meant that they could produce their own supplies for the war. The infrastructure was beneficial to them because they had a large, expansive railroad system. Their railroad system allowed them to transport both troops and materials easily from place to place. Their strong infrastructure also included their navy and war equipment. During the war, the Union had a stronger navy and better weapons than the South.
Historian, George Frederickson addresses the blue over the gray and sources of success and failure in the Civil War. He emphasizes the North’s advantages providing many plausible explanations of why the North won. He mentions the North’s advantages in manpower, resources, and industrial capacity. The North had an excess of three to one readily available manpower. For every southern industrial worker, the North had a factory or workshop.
The North had beaten the South in the Civil War. The North won the war for many reasons; they had some advantages over the South, a great leader, and the desire to win. The North and South fought many battles before the Civil War ended. Each battle had a different outcome and some encouraging the fight and some ended in despair.
However, they could not fight as well with just cotton. They did not have a lot of weapons just what was in their closets basically. The North had a ton of people that were fighting against the South and although the South had motivation and the battle was in their backyard it just wasn’t enough to win. The North basically had everything needed to win where as the South had nothing. If the South had somehow gained more people to fight and better weaponry there is a good
Not only did the Union have advantage over advanced weapons, but also railroads. Because they own the majority of the railroad tracks, they were standardized which meant that it was able to switch train cars efficiently. It was an efficient and safe system in moving troops and supplies. On the other hand, the Confederates' tracks were not standardized. Therefore they had the disadvantage for transporting people and goods.
The Civil War, a cause not only for the end of slavery, but to bring back the Confederacy as well. Many thought that simply because the North had a clear advantage over the South, such as population or weaponry, the war would end quickly, people picnicked on the first battles of war, watching the battles, but they didn’t fully realize how deadly new weapons had evolved. A single shot could easily kill anyone within range. People soon found how effective technology had become, and how well the South could fight back. Throughout the earlier years of the war the Confederates won nearly all their major battles, such as the very first battle at Fort Sumter, or the following one at Bull Run.
As a result, they were always unequipped and could not keep up. The North therefore used more efficient weapons while the South used ancient weapons. Furthermore, the North was more populated than the thus those wounded in war were easily replaced by the North as opposed to the South. The Civil War lasted longer than it was anticipated. The American Civil War lasted longer than it was inescapable because of the considerable crevice between the warring parties socially, economically and politically.
The Civil War The Civil War was the deadliest war in American history with over 600000 American deaths reported. This war was fought to keep the Confederate States from leaving the Union. The Union won because they had a telegraph system and had more resources. The effect of the Union victory has had a large impact on society.
The North had many advantages over the South the helped them win the civil war. These reasons included a central leadership, more resources, and recruiting black men for their armies. These reasons helped the North win the civil war and play a big part in how successful they would be. With having advantages, better tactics when fighting, and also a higher population, the North would use strategic planning to fight the South and ultimately win the civil war.
One, in particular, would be the North’s abundance of soldiers. Edwin C. Bearss claims, “The South lost the Civil War because of a number of factors. It was inherently weaker in the various essentials to win a military victory in the North. The north had a population of more than twenty-two million people to the South’s nine and a half million of whom four and a half million were slaves”. With the North having more people to go to war with, it was clear their army would be able to defeat the South.
