Although, some of the technology failed in its ineffectiveness, other technological innovations such as weaponry and communicative devices not only caused bloodier wars, but such innovative advancements have also influenced the results of the Civil War.
In order to understand the significance of technological innovation, one must know the different kinds of advanced technology such as the tools the people used for combat, communication, transportation, and survival. The Union and the Confederates used weaponry such as guns, rockets, grenades, and mines for better accuracy and efficient shooting. They also used warships and floodlights for sinking and searching other ships. Not only did the Union and Confederates use weaponry, but they also

These weapons were mostly used by the Union due to the fact that they created many of the weapons such as the repeaters. The repeaters, repeating rifles made to shoot consecutively before reloading, were an efficient way to shoot quickly and effectively before the Confederates have time to reload. Before the Civil War, soldiers used muskets, which took a long time to load and are close-ranged. However, in the 1850s, rifled weapons including the rifled cannons were created and they played a role in the Civil War. These weapons were used for accuracy and distance to easily destroy the other opponents and win the war. By firing bigger and heavier cannons with the use of rifled cannons, forts are easily damaged and destroyed. Although the Union used most of the gun weaponry, the Confederates also used at least some form of gun weaponry. They used machine guns such as the Gatling gun, the Williams gun, and the Billinghurst-Requa Battery gun. Unfortunately, these guns shoot slower and were less efficient than those the Union used; therefore, they were used as a defense instead of an offense. Another gun that failed to be used as an offense was the Winans Steam gun. Dickinson planned to sell the gun to the Confederates, but it was taken by the Union. Luckily for the Confederates, the gun wasn’t used in combat due to the fact that the Winans Steam Gun wasn’t as …show more content…
Not only did the Union have advantage over advanced weapons, but also railroads. Because they own the majority of the railroad tracks, they were standardized which meant that it was able to switch train cars efficiently. It was an efficient and safe system in moving troops and supplies. On the other hand, the Confederates' tracks were not standardized. Therefore they had the disadvantage for transporting people and goods. The innovation of railroads caused mass development of communications by stimulating communication with other nations. Another form of transportation both sides used was a hot air balloon. For the Union, these hot air balloons were used for scouting at battles and provide updates on the troops through a telegraph line. While for the Confederates, they were not very successful in using these military balloons due to the lack of resources to construct these balloons and the capture of their one
It was invented by a Frenchman named Marin le Bourgeoys The musket is a long barreled single shot weapons that was usually shot from the shoulder. The firing range of a musket is about 250 yards. It fired pure round lead balls which was the second most common bullet that was used in the civil war. If a soldier had a muscled they would be designed as a musketeer. The musket was made of wood and metal.
The Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865, so the ability for a Soldier to have a much more advanced weapon like a Lever-Action rifle was possible. Two Lever-Action rifles were available, the Henry rifle and the Spencer rifle/carbine. The Henry rifle was made by the New Haven Arms company and the Spencer made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle company.
Geography Geography Impacted sectional differences that led to the civil war. The northerners were against slavery and the southerners were proslavery. It depended upon what state that you have lived in if you were a free state or not. In the south there were More than 4 million slaves many who worked on plantations. Innovation/technology Technology Impacted sectional differences that led to the civil war .
The technological advancement of steam power helped command the factories and power ships. Steam power gave the north an advantage in war because it was faster and less labor intensive, therefore the South would need to fight back in a way that was impossible for them to match (Steel). The Ships that the Unions factories began producing consisted of iron plating that made them incredibly difficult to sink (steel). The Union was so superior in the navy because “In the South, where iron was scarce and the ability to make powerful steam engines was virtually nonexistent, Confederates were also forced to seek other methods of protecting their ports from an increasingly armored Union fleet” (Steel). The mixture of the steam power and iron ships made it incredibly difficult for the confederates to have any naval advantages and that was simply because the Northern geographic wealth forced them to make technological advancements for the factories which was later put into use of producing powerful materials for making ships of war (steel).
In the north, there was a widespread implementation of rifles. This destroyed the effectiveness of Napoleonic strategies that focused on concentrated attacks. The south tried their best to hold on to the past, “[n]apoleon’s principles continued to be upheld, sometimes with disastrous consequences on the battlefield” (American Military History - Volume 1, 13). The north adapted for a modern time and when the Civil War ended, new tactics developed by the north were implemented.
The Civil War was fought on U.S soil during the 1800’s for the cause to bring the nation back together and later in the war, to end slavery. As a result, The North or the Union ended up beating their opponent, the Confederacy. Why did the Union beat the Confederates? The Union won this battle because of material, economic and population advantages and the role that the African-Americans played in the war. First, the union had advantages in material, economics, and population.
.The Civil War changed the country in many ways. Thousands of men on both sides died during the Civil War. “The Union Army lost 352, 528 men and the Confederate Army lost 258,000 men” (Doc F). Innovative ways to fight came about during the Civil War.
There were many types of cannons used in the the civil war, including the 6-pounder Gun, M1857 12-pounder "Napoleon", 12-pounder Howitzer, 24-pounder Howitzer, 10-pounder Parrott rifle, 3-inch Ordnance Rifle, and the 20-pounder Parrott rifle. One of the more important technological advances at the time of the Civil War was the ability mass produce rifled barrel field artillery, increasing their accuracy and range. Smoothbore cannon were still used, falling into two categories, guns and howitzers, for firing at higher trajectories and shorter ranges.
In that age of artillery, cannons were immobile and fixed into defensive positions such as command posts or battleships. 19th-century artillery was the most active form of war tactic on the battlefield worldwide including the battle of Malvern Hill. Mortars were the backbone of the civil war, key to why the battles lasted so long. The weapon systems were not as accurate but could surely suppress the enemy with shortly fused bombs that would explode 10 meters above ground. Cannon battles were fought at the maximum range of 900 meters at the rate of 1 round every 3 minutes at a direct fire
Both the Civil War and World War I had their respective shares of technological advancements prior to both conflicts taking off. Leadership found the advancements both appealing and appalling. The advancements changed the way the battles were fought, but at what cost in the beginning? With the Civil War edging closer to the horizon in 1861, a new terrifying weapon was being brought to the forefront.
During the American Civil War, the Union utilized a wide variety of weapons. This included large weapons that had to be pushed, such as cannons, to small knives that hung from the soldier’s belt. Solders carried pistols, muskets, rifles and repeating weapons. During time period new technologies were made. Many different rifles were used in the Civil War.
As a result, they were always unequipped and could not keep up. The North therefore used more efficient weapons while the South used ancient weapons. Furthermore, the North was more populated than the thus those wounded in war were easily replaced by the North as opposed to the South. The Civil War lasted longer than it was anticipated. The American Civil War lasted longer than it was inescapable because of the considerable crevice between the warring parties socially, economically and politically.
The Civil War The Civil War was the deadliest war in American history with over 600000 American deaths reported. This war was fought to keep the Confederate States from leaving the Union. The Union won because they had a telegraph system and had more resources. The effect of the Union victory has had a large impact on society.
Traveling for trade’s or for visit was a lot more faster after the steamboat was invented. It was a lot more easier to travel upriver and going against its current. Before the steamboat was even invented, they took more time and a lot more energy when going up steam or against the current. The use of steam speed up the efficient transportation of perishable good and trades. Steamboat was extremely valuable during the civil war.
In the Civil War there were a lot of different variations of rifles and pistols used by the North and South. In some cases, these weapons had a huge effect in deaths. Also most people don’t realise that pistols also could be a deadly at short range. These guns were a big part of the Civil War.
