When reading "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" for the first time as a child, I never suspected there to be any underlying messages in the text. However, after a thorough analysis of literary criticism on this children's book, I was able to conclude that this book suggests Marxist criticism. It's clear throughout the story that the Whos are a society of people without class structure. The only exception is the Grinch himself who lives north of Whoville, living in seclusion from their classless society. The fact that the Grinch is habitually ostracized insinuates that he may be of the lower class than the Whos. In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens the passage that appears as a necessary part of the novel in order to understand the theme includes details that also contribute to the better understanding of the character. This passage acted as a description of Scrooge, how he presented himself, and the way people saw him. In the novel Dickens uses metaphors and alliteration to help the reader understand the Scrooge’s transformation throughout the novel. Dickens writes, “No warmth could warm, nor wintry weather chill him” when reading that, a reader thinks of Scrooge being in or around the warmest weather and still not able to warm himself, they may also picture him in the coldest weather and not freezing to death.
Dickens uses Fred as an implication of Scrooges is tenancy to exclude any possible happiness from his life and how such decisions will lead him to tedious misery. Fred approaches his uncle with a “merry Christmas!” A delightful atmosphere suddenly created through Fred's upbeat character. We are shown Scrooge does not lack the presence of a family with great love for him, but lacks the ability to uptake the offers his family make, requesting his presence seen to be humid and dismal to others but seen as the presence of their uncle to themselves. The excessive use of exclamation marks shows us Scrooge although rude and dismissive towards others is accepted in the presence of his nephew Fred.

The poem is about the Grinch who hates Christmas so he wants to ruin it for people in Whoville, in which he achieved by stealing the presents from them. As the spirt begins to show Ebenezer the young boy and girl, he develops an appalled look upon him. Dickens describes the two as a “yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish” looking. The Spirt explains to Scrooge that the two below his robe belong to Man. That the boy represented Ignorance and the girl Want. The Spirt begins to warn him of the boy, “…for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased…”

Charles Dickens argues in his writing A Christmas Carol that the poor was being treated cruelly and the rich does not care for the poor. Pg 34 “We should make some slight provisions for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at this present time”. This statement shows that the poor and destitute were not provided with anything and they suffered a lot. ”If they would rather die they better do it, and decrease the surplus population”.
Dr. Seuss’ poem, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” can be analyzed using many different schools of criticism, however, the psychoanalytical school of criticism holds allows us to truly understand the “true meaning” behind the poem. The poem begins with a socially isolated character, the Grinch, who loathes Christmas and wishes to completely destroy it. He wants to completely eliminate Christmas from “Whoville.” The Grinch gets irritated whenever when he hears the singing from the children and sees families feasting together in the holiday season. However, as the poem progress, the Grinch starts to feel the love and happiness involved with Christmas and ends up correcting his wrongdoings to ultimately enjoy Christmas with the “Whos.”
John Dickens was a naval clerk and his mother had always dreamed of being a teacher so she helped as much as she could for her children to succeed. In 1824 his father was sent to prison for debt. Charles decided to leave school and try to help the family as much as he could. Later on, his father would be released from prison, and Charles would go back to school only to be pulled back out at the age of 15 to once again help with the family income (Biography). The Victorian Era was a time that the government was not seen as much because of the changing laws as well as no longer being able to sentence people to cruel and unusual punishments.
