Why Did Dickens Write A Christmas Carol

One out of every seven people in America live under the poverty line. Even though the Christmas Carol is fictional novella it still illustrates examples of poverty, its effects and what can be done to stop it. Throughout the Christmas Carol different characters who either live in poverty, or are ignorant of it completely. This is a Scenario is applicable to real life. Many people believe that poverty is the fault or problem of those afflicted by it.

Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens in 1843 where there was a lot of poverty in England. Charles was poor growing up so his dad got sent to prison and Charles got sent to a workhouse. This is a story about a man that changes personalities in a little time. Charles wrote the Christmas Carol to show people to be kind and give to all people no matter what and to also treat the poor as equal.

It was a very merry day in London on December 25, 1853 as the village was filled with laughter and joy as families all around celebrated the ecstatic holiday of Christmas together. Wherever you went you would see people of all nature without a morose (p. 5) attitude celebrating with family, even the most unlikely businessman who the town knew as Ebenezer Scrooge. When reading "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" for the first time as a child, I never suspected there to be any underlying messages in the text. However, after a thorough analysis of literary criticism on this children's book, I was able to conclude that this book suggests Marxist criticism. It's clear throughout the story that the Whos are a society of people without class structure. The only exception is the Grinch himself who lives north of Whoville, living in seclusion from their classless society. The fact that the Grinch is habitually ostracized insinuates that he may be of the lower class than the Whos. In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens the passage that appears as a necessary part of the novel in order to understand the theme includes details that also contribute to the better understanding of the character. This passage acted as a description of Scrooge, how he presented himself, and the way people saw him. In the novel Dickens uses metaphors and alliteration to help the reader understand the Scrooge’s transformation throughout the novel. Dickens writes, “No warmth could warm, nor wintry weather chill him” when reading that, a reader thinks of Scrooge being in or around the warmest weather and still not able to warm himself, they may also picture him in the coldest weather and not freezing to death.

Dickens uses Fred as an implication of Scrooges is tenancy to exclude any possible happiness from his life and how such decisions will lead him to tedious misery. Fred approaches his uncle with a “merry Christmas!” A delightful atmosphere suddenly created through Fred's upbeat character. We are shown Scrooge does not lack the presence of a family with great love for him, but lacks the ability to uptake the offers his family make, requesting his presence seen to be humid and dismal to others but seen as the presence of their uncle to themselves. The excessive use of exclamation marks shows us Scrooge although rude and dismissive towards others is accepted in the presence of his nephew Fred.

The school method of criticism that I will use to analyze the poem "How the Grinch Stole Christmas” is a Marxist critic. It is a theory, the consciousness of a given class at a given historical moment derives from modes of material production that were demonstrated through the relationship between the Grinch and the people of Whoville. The poem is about the Grinch who hates Christmas so he wants to ruin it for people in Whoville, in which he achieved by stealing the presents from them. The Grinch’s hatred towards Christmas was directly shown in the poem, “The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!”

This is done in such a manner as to shock and appall the reader, leading to greater emotional investment. Throughout the extract’s entirety, Ignorance and Want are depicted as children, increasing the atmosphere of pessimism that surrounds them. Dickens describes the manner in which the Ghost of Christmas Present “brought two children” – by describing Ignorance and Want as “children”, Dickens creates the impression of innocence, vulnerability, and weakness.

In A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens utilizes a plethora of literary devices such as similes, metaphors, imagery, and denouement to explore the capacity for change. This reveals that changing is never impossible until you’re six-feet under. A simile is a comparison that usually uses the word “like” or “as”. Dickens’ use of similes demonstrates how Scrooge changes throughout the story and because of this, we see how changing all aspects of yourself isn’t impossible. “Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self- contained, and solitary as an oyster.”

As the spirt begins to show Ebenezer the young boy and girl, he develops an appalled look upon him. Dickens describes the two as a “yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish” looking. The Spirt explains to Scrooge that the two below his robe belong to Man. That the boy represented Ignorance and the girl Want. The Spirt begins to warn him of the boy, “…for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased…”

"A Christmas Carol" is a story about a very poor family with a and a very selfish and unbelieving store owner, Ebenezer Scrooge. It was written by Charles Dickens in September of 1843 and published in December of 1843. It is still very popular today. " A Christmas Carol" is a ghost story.

Charles Dickens argues in his writing A Christmas Carol that the poor was being treated cruelly and the rich does not care for the poor. Pg 34 “We should make some slight provisions for the poor and destitute, who suffer greatly at this present time”. This statement shows that the poor and destitute were not provided with anything and they suffered a lot. ”If they would rather die they better do it, and decrease the surplus population”.

Dr. Seuss’ poem, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” can be analyzed using many different schools of criticism, however, the psychoanalytical school of criticism holds allows us to truly understand the “true meaning” behind the poem. The poem begins with a socially isolated character, the Grinch, who loathes Christmas and wishes to completely destroy it. He wants to completely eliminate Christmas from “Whoville.” The Grinch gets irritated whenever when he hears the singing from the children and sees families feasting together in the holiday season. However, as the poem progress, the Grinch starts to feel the love and happiness involved with Christmas and ends up correcting his wrongdoings to ultimately enjoy Christmas with the “Whos.”

John Dickens was a naval clerk and his mother had always dreamed of being a teacher so she helped as much as she could for her children to succeed. In 1824 his father was sent to prison for debt. Charles decided to leave school and try to help the family as much as he could. Later on, his father would be released from prison, and Charles would go back to school only to be pulled back out at the age of 15 to once again help with the family income (Biography). The Victorian Era was a time that the government was not seen as much because of the changing laws as well as no longer being able to sentence people to cruel and unusual punishments.
