Harriet Tubman worked for the Union Army during the Civil War as a nurse, cook, and spy so she knew the land of the south very well. The fact that she knew the land of the south very well was extremely helpful for the runaway slaves when escaping through the Underground Railroad (Maschi). According to the Library of Congress, if any slave decided they wanted to stop their journey and turn back to return to their masters, Harriet would hold a gun at them and say, “You’ll be free, or die a slave”. Harriet feared that if slaves returned then hers as well as the other escaping slaves lives would be in great danger by getting discovered, being captured, and lastly being killed.

The Civil War was a horrid event that greatly affected our modern day lives. From 1861 to 1865 the Union and the Confederates fought to protect what they thought was right. Throughout the war many people turned up and encouraged change in areas they believed were lacking thought such as, abolition, women 's rights, and suffrage. One of this people was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist, which means that she was against slavery.

Undoubtedly, Harriet Tubman was the most influential abolitionist of the early to mid-1800s.  Born a slave in 1820, Tubman escaped her plantation in 1849, and returned 19 times to rescue over 300 enslaved people.  Tubman was called “Black Moses” because she, like Moses of the Old Testament, led her people out of persecution and into freedom. She had narcolepsy (a mental disorder that causes one to fall asleep randomly) but still served as a nurse, a scout, and a spy for the Union during the Civil War.  

In this essay I will examine the Underground Railroad over a period of turbulence that spanned ten years and focus on some of the key figures involved and the significance of their roles. Harriet Tubman and Harriet Breecher Stowe were both central to the movement during this time and although they focused their attention on vastly different areas of the Railroad both women had a profound and positive impact. Harriet Beecher Stowe was a white woman from Cincinnati Ohio. When the Fugitive Slave Act 1850 came into effect it ironically galvanised a new era in the Underground Railroad where Stowe, like many other whites was spurred into action. Not only did Stowe personally aid escaping slaves by welcoming them into her home temporarily

During the mid 1800’s in America, slaves made up a big percentage of the U.S. population. Around 1830, sixteen percent, or two million Americans were slaves. Within just thirty years, this percentage dropped by four percent.

Harriet was the creator of many of the paths on the underground railroad, as well as she acted as an escorter of cargo (Slaves on the underground railroad). On her numerous trips, she saved more than 38 slaves in a span of 10 years” (Document B). She risked 10 years of her life and her freedom to save these people. After Congress Enacted the Bloodhound Act Harriet lead 8 rescue missions, traveling approximately 400 miles past police (Document A). She was the Moses of the underground railroad taking slaves to New Canaan ”Canada”.

One such slave was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman was One of the most well-known conductors of the Underground Railroad. She rescued over 300 slaves over the course of eleven years. Tubman was born a slave in the early 1820’s, originally named Araminta Harriet Ross until after marriage. When she was a slave, she endured the inhumanity of repeated lashings and beatings.

Harriet Tubman (Araminta Ross) was one of the most famous conductors of the Underground Railroad and known as Moses to her people. The Underground Railroad was not actually a railroad, but a secret way of rescuing slaves. She was known as Moses because she brought over slaves throughout a ten-year period to the “promised land” or freedom.

Harriet Tubman mostly known for her abolitionist work was a very influential woman that saved many slaves’ lives. She was born into slavery with siblings and parents by her side. She died on March 10, 1913, but is still remembered for all of her work. Harriet Tubman had a hard life in slavery, worked in the Civil War, rescued slaves, worked on the underground railroad and can be compared to Nat Turner who also lived in the period of time when there was slavery. First off, Harriet Tubman was a slave that suffered many beatings and punishments for her actions that would cause her to have seizures in her later life.

She has helped the United States in many ways. After that she also purchased land to build a home in 1896 for needy and sick blacks. Harriet tubman was the conductor of the underground railroad The Underground Railroad was a bunch secret routes and safe houses that slaves used to escape to free states or Canada. Harriet was one of the people who helped establish the Underground Railroad. She was also known as “Moses.”

Harriet Tubman was a strong and amazing women who was brave enough to take a stand and get many slaves to freedom. She knew that there was a better life in freedom and after seeing her family and herself in bad situations she knew she had help other, “Physical violence

The Underground Railroad was a system of abolitionists that assisted runaway slaves on their path to freedom. The Underground railroad was started by abolitionist and former slave, Harriet Tubman. Once Tubman obtained her freedom, she decided to go back into slave states and help other slaves achieve freedom. On the railroad were conductors, or people that aided slaves on the railroad by providing them shelter and safety. Abolitionists, such as William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass, wrote about the Underground Railroad and spread awareness of the hardships slaves face.
