What Role Did Ulysses S Grant Play In The American Civil War Essay

The Battle/Siege of Vicksburg The Battle of Vicksburg was one of the most crucial points in the Civil War. It helped Eradicate the Rebels/Confederacy once and for all. The Civil War was fought for over 4 years and it lasted from 1861-1865. It was one of the most horrific wars the world has ever known and witnessed.

Mr. Grant was born was born on April 27, 1822. When he was about 17 his dad arranged for him to be put in the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Grant wasn’t very superior at West Point, but he was found to be excellent at horsemanship. He graduated in 1843. Soon Ulysses was ship off to the Mexican-American War where he served as a quartermaster.

Grant graduated from the Military Academy in the US in 1843, he then joined the army and eventually left it army in 1854 and had a hard time becoming financially stable. When the Civil war began, he rejoined the army and became the 6th in command army general. Then,

Grant also was educated from a young age. But his passion In his youth, Grant developed a special ability to ride, work with, and control horses. Grant too attended west point. Grant was not a distinguished student as he graduated in the middle of his military class. This would lead to grant to serving as a quartermaster rather than to the cavalry because of his graduating spot from west point.

Lee's first battle was on September 12, 1861, he and his army suffered defeat at the Battle of Cheat Mountain, by the Union forces commander Major Gen. George B. McClellan. After the defeat, Lee quickly regains his strength. He then regrouped and fought a series of battles some of the famous battles like the Seven Days Battles, the Second Battle of Bull Run (Second Manassas), Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, Battle of Gettysburg, and the Appomattox Campaign, which was the place where Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. Among those battles both the Confederate army and the Union were both impressed by the brilliant, and unique way of thinking and military strategy by Lee. According to the research of those battles, Lee, and his army were mostly outnumbered.

Grant was a very prominent figure of the time period and led the Union to victory and helped heal the fractured United States afterward. General Grant began his military career at West Point when he was just sixteen. He was top of his class and when he graduated, he began his four years of service and went into combat in the Mexican-American War. He was promoted to captain as a result of his bravery during the war. After this, his four-year commitment to the army was up, he left and did not expect to come back.

Grant in a series of battles in Virginia in 1864-1865 before he finally surrendered

However, while he may have been a prodigious general who won the Civil War for the Union, Grant was a substandard president. He won the Election of 1868 by a landslide after the highly unpopular Andrew Johnson’s retirement, and served two terms before retiring absolutely broke. As a president of both the historical Reconstruction Era and the Gilded Age, Grant was in a difficult position.

Ulysses S. Grant’s birth name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. Grant was the oldest of 6 kids (including him) his siblings were: Samuel, Clara, Virginia, Orville, and Mary Grant. When he was a boy he showed great ability as a horseman. When Grant turned 17 he joined West Point military academy when being enrolled. An error listed him as Ulysses S. Grant, but he did not want to be rejected from the school so, he changed his name to Ulysses S. Grant.

The Union also had superior resources, including manpower, industrial capacity, and naval dominance, which provided a significant advantage. However, the Union forces faced some challenges.

Ulysses was a very timid and reserved, he was not out of the ordinary as a child. His father was a tanner and he hated the fact of working as a tanner. So his father entered him at the Military Academy at West Point when he was seventeen. When he entered the school an accounting error had him as Ulysses S. Grant, at this time his name was still Hiram.

Ulysses S. Grant (named Hiram Ulysses Grant) was born on April 27, 1822. Grant began his military career graduating Westpoint as an average student in 1843. Grant fought in the Mexican-American War along with Robert E. Lee, a man he would be facing on the battlefield nearly fifteen years later. Grant came to an early retirement in 1854 but after struggling monetarily in civilian life he rejoined the Union army in 1861. Grant was the most famous Union General in the Civil War.

In the military, he was able to trust his fellow commanders to do things well and in a good manner, since people’s lives were at stake. As a politician, he thought that he could trust these same people to do well, and he gave them more free will than he should have. Trusting people too much was something that hurt him in his political career. Ronald C. White, author of American Ulysses: A Life of Ulysses S. Grant, likes to point out that Ulysses S. Grant did not even like politics. He did not want to be a politician, and only did to help the country.

General Ulysses S. Grant was a very powerful man. He was the son of a tanner on the Western frontier. He wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was very modern, and thought you had to work hard no matter what. Grant was a man that did not live in the past.
