How Did General Ulysses S. Grant Impact The Civil War

The Civil war was important and also a few people Like Abraham Lincoln, Dorothea Dix.,Ulysses S.Grant and Robert E.Lee. Generals on both sides of the Civil War used different military strategies and tactics commanded their troops. Generals Ulyssess S. Grant and William T. Sherman both had different strategies and tactics and their strategies and tactics differed from traditional military practices. Ulyssess S. Grant wanted to use two main military strategies to win the war. First, he wanted to combine military efforts. In order to cut the Confederates off from directing their forces at one place they wanted them to have to split their numbers.

Grant graduated from the Military Academy in the US in 1843, he then joined the army and eventually left it army in 1854 and had a hard time becoming financially stable. When the Civil war began, he rejoined the army and became the 6th in command army general. Then,

At a military school, which was like high school, people thought he would be a fail in the military. Grant grew up kind of poor, but when he got married, he lived on a plantation with his wife. Grant fought in many important wars in the United States history like the Civil War. He was considered to be a brave soldier in the military. In the military, Grant fought for the Union.

Grant admired how Zachary Taylor was so calm when he was the leader, but Grant did not like all the waste and ravage of war. After the war was over Grant became very depressed and out of know where decided to leave the army. After that, he went back home, but they had little money, and he ended up asking his father for help. Shortly after the Civil War started between the Union, and the Confederates and the Union needed an experienced army officer. Grant became a brigadier general in the war.

Fort Sumter The battle of Fort Sumter was the first major battle of the American Civil War. The battle lasted for April 12th to April 13th. Roughly 80 Union soldiers and roughly 500 Confederate soldiers were involved in the altercation. On April 12th Andersen had promised to surrender on April 15th but soon learned that that was not soon enough.

Sherman fought and led in many battles during this time. He had Ulysses S. Grants support and helped the Union win the war. William T. Sherman was a skillful general in the war and through his ‘March to the Sea’ he became famous in the North and notorious in the South. The first battle Sherman fought in was the battle at Bull Run.

Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio in April of 1822. He graduated from West Point in 1843. He was found to be an effective soldier/leader during the Mexican War, however, once the excitement of battle was over he was no longer interested in the mundane tasks of the everyday soldier. General Grant developed a very heavy drinking habit and resigned his commission in 1854. Once the Civil War began he enlisted in the Union Army and was promoted to brigadier general.

The First Battle of Fort Sumter began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate artillery fired on the Union garrison. These were the first shots of the war and continued all day, watched by many civilians in a celebratory spirit. The fort had been cut off from its supply line and surrendered the next day. The Second Battle of Fort Sumter (September 8, 1863) was a failed attempt by the Union to retake the fort, dogged by a rivalry between army and navy commanders. Although the fort was reduced to rubble, it remained in Confederate hands until it was evacuated as General Sherman marched through South Carolina in February 1865.

Because of Grant trying to discipline himself with his drinking he was able to discipline other people better which helped him get a regiment of soldiers into fighting shape in the beginning of the Civil War. Because of this he was promoted

He was a chief in commander even though he had little experience on the battlefield(Coolidge 163). That didn’t stop him from going forth and reading about warfare. He improved many of the Union’s tactics because the Union general weren’t the best and the south exceed them in generals. He is the main reason that the Union was able to beat the south since he influenced the

Abraham Lincoln is one of the most influential people during the Civil war, and may even be integral for it to happen as we know it. This will be about why Abraham Lincoln is one of the most important people to the civil war. There are multiple reasons; three being that he help to inspire soldiers to keep fighting, secondly he created the Emancipation Proclamation which is one of the most important documents during the Civil War, finally his election was the last facter in starting the civil war. The first reason is that he was the person that helped inspire others to keep fighting. During the Civil War Abraham Lincoln gave many speeches and addresses.

If he hadn’t been promoted, Henry Halleck would have remained in command and Grant would have stayed in the West, which could have changed the outcome of the war.

Sherman first saw combat at the Battle of First Manassas, where he commanded a brigade of Tyler’s Division. Although the Union army was defeated during the battle, President Abraham Lincoln was impressed by Sherman’s performance and he was promoted to brigadier general on August 7, 1861, ranking seventh among other officers at that grade. He was sent to Kentucky to begin the Union task of keeping the state from seceding. While in the state, Sherman expressed his views that the war would not end quickly, and he was replaced by Don Carlos Buell. Sherman was moved to St. Louis, where he served under Henry W. Halleck and completed logistical missions during the Union capture of Fort Donnellson.

Grant was a republican and played two roles, or had two very important occupations as an American. He of course was the president, but still led many battles during his presidency being a general. During his term of office, some significant events occurred such as the Transcontinental Railroad. This connected the railroads of the Union and Central Pacific tracks, this happened in Promontory Point, Utah. Also, in New York in 1870, construction of the to be longest suspension bridge in the world, was in construction.
