The Civil War was fought for over 4 years and it lasted from 1861-1865. It was one of the most horrific wars the world has ever known and witnessed.

During the civil war, there were two battles in Saltville, VA. The first battle took place on October 2, 1864, and it resulted in a confederate victory; the following day, the Saltville Massacre occurred. The second battle, the topic of this report, took place on December 20 and 21st. This was the second time Union troops actively attempted to capture the Saltworks. Days before the attack in Saltville, the Union troops fought in Marion and Wytheville.

On April 6, 1862 the Battle of Shiloh began and lasted for approximately a day and half; this battle was fought between General Albert Sidney Johnston and General Ulysses S. Grant and led to the South’s demise in the war. The battle site was named Shiloh due to the small church that stands in the middle of the battlefield. In this particular battle of the civil war, General Albert Sidney Johnston died. He was the highest ranking General of the civil war; on either side. General Ulysses S. Grant, and many others, considered this battle to be the bloodiest battle of the civil war.

The Civil War began on April 12,1861 and ended on April 9, 1865. This four year battle had more than 50 major battles occurred during this tragic time in history. On March 6, 1862 - March 8, 1862 an important battle took place that left the Union Army with a good strategical position for the rest of the war. This battle was fought in Pea Ridge, Arkansas. This battle is known as the The Battle of Pea Ridge.

Battle of Fort Pillow The battle of Fort Pillow was short but very tragic. Some people believe it is the most controversial event in the Civil War. It was fought at Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River in Henning, Tennessee. The date was April 12, 1864.

Soon to be joined by four other states. Southerners felt as the government was getting to strong, they felt as if no one would tell them how to live. South Carolina being the first state to leave the union. The Confederates demanded the Union to leave Fort Sumter after many failed negotiations and demands the confederates opened fire for 34 straight hours. This would be the start of the first Civil War battle.

I choose to write about the Battle of Gettysburg. The first day of the Battle of Gettysburg there was 50,000 soldiers involved but ended up with 15,500 casualties. The first day of the battle was the 12th bloodiest battle in the Civil War. The second day of the battle was largest of the three day battle. There was 100,000 soldiers involved but ended up with 20,000 casualties.

After the Confederacy surrender, President Jefferson Davis set-up a temporary government, made plans to flee to a sympathetic country, and eventually retreated to Georgia after the Union army attempted to capture him. Ultimately, On May 10, 1865, Jefferson Davis was captured by union forces in Irwinville, Georgia, imprisoned, and charged with treason (Georgia Encyclopedia).

The War of 1812 officially began June 18, 1812; however, it did not reach Pensacola in Spanish Florida until November of 1814. General Andrew Jackson led the American troops against the British and Spanish soldiers that controlled the city of Pensacola. The Battle of Pensacola, really more of a skirmish, was one of the last confrontations before the war ended. Although such a small battle, it was a very strategic victory for America.
