There were many causes that led to the beginning of the War of 1812. The war lasted from June 1812 to February 1815. The War of 1812 was a war fought between the United States of America and Great Britain. One of the main reasons that the war began was because Great Britain was using impressment against America. Impressment is when you raid other ships and get whatever goods they have and force the crew into your navy. They took thousands of United States naval men into their army. Great Britain had one of the strongest navies in the world at the time. When Thomas Jefferson became president, the United States and Great Britain started moving away from each other. America’s navy was not very strong at this time in history because they were just emerging as a country. Another cause that started the war was because Great Britain was halting American trade with other countries. Britain started a law called the Orders in Council. This law made it illegal for a neutral country, like the United States, to trade with France or one of their colonies. At the time, James Madison was the President of the United States. This war was fought during the Industrial Revolution. By the end of the war, about fifteen thousand Americans died and about nine thousand British soldiers died. There was a great number of military generals during this war. William Henry Harrison was one of the main ones. He defeated Tecumseh’s army at the Battle of Tippecanoe and was later elected President of the United States because of this victory. Another major general was Andrew Jackson. He had a major victory against the British army at the Battle of New Orleans and this helped him get elected as the President of the United States. On the Native American side, there was Tecumseh. He was the Shawnee leader and fought with the British, but was killed at the Battle of the
