Jefferson purchased the territory because he wanted to have control of the Port of New Orleans. The Spanish had previous control over it before Napoleon and they would not let the U.S. use the port for trade. Jefferson did not know the other territory he purchased so he sent out several expeditions to explore the new territory. He commissioned one of the most famously known expeditions, the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Louisiana purchase and more expansion of the U.S. brought many concerns. First, how was the U.S. supposed to defend the grand new territory? They needed a defense against the Native Americans and the British. The British still had troops in the U.S. and Tecumseh was leading a Native American resistance movement. Second, how were they supposed to pay for that defense? This new acquisition and expansion caused more questions than answers. The tensions between the U.S. and Great Britain boiled over by 1812 and the War of 1812 begins. It is ultimately a war of expansion and ends in a stalemate. The Peace Treaty of Gent ends the war with a draw. had to deal with the Native American resistance movement headed by Tecumseh. He was from the Shawnee tribe in Ohio. He inspired fellow Native Americans to join his movement, He believed the Indian way of life should continue no matter what the cost. Tecumseh believed that the Ohio was the center of the world and it was a very special place to them. His battle was a thirty-year struggle to keep Native American Lands. Detroit of 1812 was his finest moment when he defeats an American army six times the size of his. However, he dies in the final battle of the great lakes. The Indian resistance plan ends with his death. According to the U.S. there is no place in the American Heartland for Native
He believed that he would slaughter the Natives and win in a decisive battle. This overconfidence would ultimately lead to his death. The Native Americans would take advantage of this overconfidence in a remarkable way not losing any men during the

As a fall back plan, in case things in Paris didn’t go as planned, Jefferson also had some negotiators go to Britain to discuss other possible alliances. Napoleon, whom was leading a revolution also needed money and decided to sell the entirety of Louisiana to America for the low price of 15 million. Though the federal government wasn’t specifically defined as having the authority to make a purchase such as that but Jefferson thought about being “troubled by the inconsistency, but in the end decided that the Constitution's treaty-making provisions allowed him room to act. ”(1) This was known as the Louisiana Purchase and it consists of land from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and allowed Americans to expand even further without worry of a foreign entity keeping them from doing so or causing tension between two countries with the necessity of the trade route for the US.
The Louisiana Purchase had many affects on the country. One of the most clear results of the Louisiana purchase was that the size of the US was doubled, making it a world power with a larger population. The US also now had control of the New Orleans port allowing for more of a trade flow, and economic growth. They also gained control of many other waterways that could also be used as ports for trade. Another result that is not forgotten is that many natives were forced to assimilate or move farther
This purchase nearly doubled the size of the United States producing 15 present-day states. This entire purchase cost about 15 million dollars or about 3 cents an acre. This purchase was widely praised and criticized. Obviously, by Jefferson and his supporters, Jefferson himself called it, “an ample provision for our posterity and a widespread field for the blessings of freedom.” Meaning it
Jefferson knew it was a good buy, in contrary, he would have to break his anti-alliances policy in order to defeat Napoleon and his army. He proposed to make an alliance with Britain against France to secure New Orleans. Once Louisiana was ceded by the United States by signing three treaties for $15 million, Thomas Jefferson the strict constructionist was conflicted. He did not want to break the constitution where it says the president is authorized to obtain treaties with a large expanse into the union. The expanse was filled with diverse inhabitants, he ensured that American experiment in democracy would be beneficial.
He made them walk all the way to oklahoma from where they lived. They walked through rain, snow, heat. Most of the Indians died on the way there from phomiame from being exposed to the cold. They slept on the ground with no fire to keep them warm. 1 out of every 4 Indians died in this event.
Not only this, but they where also losing massive amounts of territory in a land not connected to their main country, resulting in a major loss of resources and opportunities that could be useful later on. One of the few positive results would be that they recieved enough money to solve their countries financial problems. With the purchase they also had less territory to worry about governing. Still, they suffered far more negative affects from the Louisiana Purchase than the
He then ordered Congress to sort exactly two million dollars aside in case of unexpected raises in the price during the agreement. Even though the original plan was just to purchase West Florida and New Orleans, the moment that Monroe had arrived in France, First Consul Bonaparte had planned to sell all of the Louisiana area to the United States in attempt to get more than enough funds for his war to reconquer the land in Haiti. On April 12, 1803, the United States had purchased the entire Louisiana Territory (about 828,000 square miles) for fifteen million dollars. 3.5 million of which went to help settle the remaining of America’s claims and debt from the Quasi War with France. This purchase not only granted the United States more land to expand too, but also the citizenship rights to the inhabitants of the land, the right to more French trading rights, as well as the right to acknowledge the Indian rights, which the natives rightfully deserved.
This quote shows that the Indians were willing to stand up for themselves and not go down without a fight because they know they didn't do anything wrong and that they didn't deserve that type of treatment. Many Native Americans suffered from exposure, disease, and starvation while in route to their destinations, and many people died, including 2,000-6,000 of the 16,542 relocated Cherokees. European Americans and African American freedmen and slaves also participated in the five civilized tribe relocations. This shows how President Andrew Jackson didn't care what happened to the Native Americans even if they died. The items listed above are examples of how poorly the Indians were treated and not respected as
He was selfish, he took land that rightfully belonged to the Indians and didn 't feel guilty about it. The battle he is known best for is the battle of New Orleans, he won the battle but that battle was not necessary. He was a sore loser, when he didn 't win president the first time around he accused Adams of corruption. When he became president he wanted to get rid of paper money, he hated it. Think about it for a minute, if he hated paper money, why should he be on it?
In the year of 1803, the Louisiana purchase occurred. The land that was purchased was very, very cheap. Napoleon sold the territory to the United States for only three cents an acre. This land needed to be explored to see what the United States had purchased. Thomas Jefferson hired Meriwether Lewis to go and explore the territory.
