In most stories there is only one universal conflict but in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” there is two, man vs. man and man vs. self. The author, Richard Connell, uses this method to change the protagonist’s harsh viewpoints. The protagonist, Rainsford, is a dynamic character. He is a professional hunter and believes animals have no emotions; however, throughout the story his attitude toward the animals he hunts, and hunting changes due to the appalling experience he lives. At first, Rainsford is on a ship on his way to go hunt in the Amazon. He is having a discussion with one of his companions about hunting. Rainsford says “The world is made up of two classes—the hunters and the hunted.” This demonstrates his insensitivity towards animals; nevertheless during the course of the story his feelings are changed. He changes because in the story the roles are reversed, instead of being the hunter he becomes the hunted. Next, while he is on the ship discussing with his companion, Whitney, she says “We should have some good hunting up the Amazon. While reading Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game”, readers find that the determining fact that makes it so gripping is the intense style in which he develops tension and foreshadowing to create suspense and a sense of uneasiness. Especially when Rainsford tumbles off his yacht in the Caribbean into the “blood warm waters” (15). “His pipe, striking the rope, was knocked from his mouth. He lunged for it; a short, hoarse cry came from his mouth”. Readers are afraid for Rainsford, that maybe he won’t survive the harsh environment of the fierce jungle.

The protagonist, Sanger Rainsford, is being hunted by General Zaroff, the short story’s antagonist. From the beginning of the story, until the last sentence, Rainsford undergoes a series of life-changing events. Albeit, he goes through character development, there are various fixed character traits of Rainsford that remain prevailing.
If this situation were to be connected in a way to The Most Dangerous Game, the reader could make the conclusion that General Zaroff is indeed the hunter making Rainsford his target. Most people when they hear “The Most Dangerous Game” they think of bull riding or other dangerous games that don’t involve death. “The Most Dangerous Game” is a suspenseful cliff hanging story that follows the days of a castaway on the island of a crazed hunter. Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
Rainsford faces many conflicts along his journey on the island, such and man v.s nature, man v.s. himself, and man v.s man. He has to overcome all of this in order to keep calm, and survive. The Most Dangerous Game Conflicts All stories have to have a conflict, the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has three important conflicts. Man against man, man against nature, man against himself are the three main conflicts that take place. For man against man Rainsford and General Zaroff are fighting each other in the hunting ‘game’. For man against nature Rainsford is fighting the sea once he hears the gunshots and is trying to get out of the water.
It is now hard for him to trust anyone after being forced to be hunted. “The pit grew deeper; when it was above his shoulders, he climbed out and from some hard saplings cut stakes and sharpened them to a fine point. These stakes he planted in the bottom of the pit with the points sticking up” (Connell 34) because of this flashback Rainsford starts to get scared about himself hurting another human being. He won’t hunt again because he remembers his times of desperation and how he felt while trying to kill a living person. Another factor of Rainsford’s nervousness is when he told that the man being hunted the day before lost his head.
