I did a two day observation of ISS/SFAS recess time. Currently ISS/SFAS, does meet the recommended “one daily period of unstructured recess with at least 20 minutes in length” to provide a break from “academic rigors” (Healthzoneschools, n.d., p. 1). During this observation time, I spent the majority of my time listening to IA’s yelling at students not to do this, not to do that through a bull horn and running students’ back and forth to the nurse’s office for variety of minor injuries. No one seemed to be having fun or getting any physical activity. I saw more children sitting under the playground equipment then playing with it. The school did provide balls, but many of them were flat. I am so happy that IIS/SFAS meets the current recommendations, but I wonder if integrating some structure through organized games, activities, etc. would help get more students’ physically active. I would be curious to see if the amount of injuries would decrease?
Part E:
I observe approximately three hours at the Cambridge-Isanti Schools Adventure Center which is an extended after school program. I learned that they try to incorporate movement and physical activity as much as possible. The majority of time is dedicated to unstructured free-play both outside and inside (gym) depending on weather

I got to see some great examples of physical education, health education, and movement is integrated in a school setting; however, I also got to see the reality of how physical activity and health education is not necessarily a priority in schools because of other academic demands. I learned that I can make a difference in my students’ lives if I understand physical activity/health education, model physical activity/health, teach physical activity/health, and become an advocate for physical/health in my classroom. I am so excited to applying everything I learned about physical activity and health education in my future
The poem “Slam, Dunk, & Hook,” has inspired me to take action in my town to raise awareness on the fact that we need more funding for sports. First of all, these are some benefits that come along with participating in a school sport or simply playing sports in your free time. Students who are active in sports, are more likely to have a positive body image and a satisfactory self-esteem. Another benefit is that physical activities are a marvelous way to relieve stress and reduce depression. “When Sonny Boy’s mama died he played nonstop all day, so hard our backboard splintered.”
“Maybe taking play time out of the day is kind of a punishment to this seemingly tortured group of young souls, after all the benifets of recess in schools are pretty powerful”. Play is essential for keeping children
These classes promote health and team building skills. Physical education classes can help students maintain a healthy lifestyle especially during the many changes they are experiencing during
In a class period that is about 45 minutes long, that isn’t a lot of active time.” Gym does not keep children active the whole time through and use all it 's time it 's just being a waste of money and time. Why pay to have children stay inactive almost the whole time gym is supposed to keep
Opening statement Most people will think that oh middle schoolers get enough physical activity but that is not the case. Middle schoolers need recess. Middle schoolers need to get all the physical activity they need to let loose their energy. The first reason is that middle schoolers from most studies done by cnn say “that middle schoolers need an average 50-60 minutes of physical activity everyday.”
Physical education, exercise science, and sports professionals all play a significant role in getting students, clients, and players to meet the goals and objectives of Healthy People 2020 and The Surgeon General’s Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation. Having a healthy lifestyle starts at an early phase in life. According to the text, “Adolescence is an important age for developing health habits that will persist into adulthood (79).” With that said, in order for them to have that healthy lifestyle they must become educated about the risks of inactivity as early as possible. Physical education is an “ongoing process of learning” that is incorporated in schools so that students learn to use that knowledge throughout their lives and also learn to enjoy doing it.
Some believe it is necessary to ban high school student from playing certain intense sports, while others do not. This topic is extremely vital and necessary to argue as it plays a major role in the lives of children regarding not only their safety and the possible risks of these hazardous sports, but the lessons of teamwork and discipline, and sources of stress outlets they bring. This topic will continue to be debated and no researcher, coach, or parent will stop arguing until all studies are proven accurate. So are all of these life and death matters worth the risks and the long hours of research and studying? That's what we are patiently waiting to find
Children have strived for years to make their parents, teachers and coaches proud of them. Kids have come to practice Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday, and Friday to get better, while their academics are suffering. Students have pushed their bodies to the limits, causing extreme injury that will hold them back from sports in the future. Student athletes are not getting the opportunity to play multiple sports during the year, because they are expected to spelize in one sport and focus on it year round, leaving no opportunity to play other sports or do other activities. Youth sports are becoming too intense for young children to keep up with.
1. Describe the students in the classroom. During this recess time all the students were at play, so no one student stood out. No issues arose so everyone got a long and no mishaps or misunderstandings during recess time 2. Describe the purpose of the activity /lesson
Dr. Frank L. Smoll states, “All children and youth need vigorous physical activity as part of their daily lives, and sports provide the benefits of exercise and the potential for acquiring a sense of accomplishment.” (Smoll 1/2).
Throughout the semester, I have gained a better understanding of adapted physical education and sport programs. These programs provide children and adults with an opportunity to participate in sports they may not have thought were possible. The modifications to sport and exercise allows individuals with a range of disabilities to engage in activity. The disabilities can range from a mild learning disability to a permanent condition caused from a serious accident. While observing numerous individuals with disabilities, I was able to obtain a better understanding of the challenges that came with physical activity.
One of the key to the successful teaching of physical education is the use of a broad range of approaches and methodologies. As it is acknowledged that schools, classes and teachers will vary, some methods will suit particular circumstances better than others, and the nature of the strands themselves necessitates the use of a variety of teaching methods. There is a need to examine the teaching methods which will best enhance the achievement of the objectives, taking factors such as the content and context of the lesson into account, as well as the needs of the learner. Teaching means sharing, guiding, changing behavior, impressing, disciplining, counseling, directing and inspiring. Good teaching is a process of producing end products of
Why kids should have a longer recess Imagine being a teacher and having a student coming up to ask you a question. And then all of a sudden, the child starts stumbling over his or her own feet, because the student did not get the proper amount of vitamin-D. As a result of not getting the proper amount {20-30} minutes of recess. This is why kids across the globe should have a longer recess. one reason students should have a longer recess is,The social factor first people need lots of human interaction.
After school, from 3 to 6 p.m, is a critical period of time in a child’s life. After school programs help keep kids safe and inspire them to learn during that period of time. After school programs are organized programs that youth can participate in outside of a traditional school day. Enrolling children in after school programs would provide them with benefits that unenrolled children would not receive, such as reduce risky behavior and promote physical health. After school programs provide a safe environment for children, while positively impacting their academics, safety, and their future.
Class Observation Summary #1 My two day observation took place at Summit Academy high school. It is a school of about 700 students located in the city of Romulus MI. The teacher, Mrs. Jill Carbone allowed me to observe the 6th hour class for two days for 60 minutes each day. This class is composed of 11 English language learners (ELL); ten of the students are Spanish speakers and one student is Urdu speaker.
