General Cornwallis was a general for the colonies but eventually turned sides after falling in love with a loyalist. He then was a loyalist now becoming a general for Britain. General Washington had just won the battle of Trenton with the continental army and needed to resupply after defeating the hessians from Britain on December 25 1776. Cornwallis heard of the victory and went to Trenton with is 8,000 redcoats to overwhelm General Washington 's 5,000 militia men.

Not only did he care about his soldiers at valley forge but many other times he had too. This battle took place after a demoralizing defeat at Long island. George Washington was forced to retreat all the way across New Jersey back in Pennsylvania. Due to the cold and harsh winter and the defeats in the previous wars, the Continental Army was one the verge of abandoning the rebellion act. Therefore George Washington needed to find something to build up the spirit in his troops. As such he then decides to cross back over the Delaware River and attack the Hessians (German hired troops) at Trenton, New Jersey.

Artillery can trace its beginnings all the way back to 400 B.C. with the invention of the catapult. Using a mechanical action to hurl large objects, usually stone, to breach fortified positions and cause mass casualties with an object from a long distance. Artillery has been a vital asset in every major battle around the world since then. The Siege of Yorktown was a key event in artillery history. The battle demonstrated that a well-planned strategy involving artillery could defeat a superior, fortified enemy very efficiently.

There have been countless battles and wars in the ancient world that have astonished historians. Thousands of bloody, inhuman battles that were fought by opposing sides. None of which have astonished historians like the battle of Marathon between the Greeks and Persians. “The battle of Marathon is one of history's most famous military engagements”(Stern, 11) according to William Stearns based off of Herodotus account. It was here at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania where the Continental Army Soldiers of the Revolutionary War chose to go after being defeated in the Battle of Germantown in October 1777. During this winter, Washington’s troops came to this encampment to recuperate and train for future battles with the British.

As dawn approached, he and his army would attack Trenton with all the force that they had at the time.
