In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, the trial of Tom Robinson serves as the pivotal and highly-anticipated moment in the novel which displays the power a white woman has over a black man. Tom Robinson is accused of raping a young white woman named Mayella Ewell. The Ewell family lacks education and money, representing the lower class. The Ewells were described as living a vile lifestyle, “...behind the town garbage dump in what was once a Negro cabin” (Doc A). When Atticus was questioning Mayella during the trial, Mayella claims, “He does tollable, ‘cept when-’ (Doc B). After seen kissing Tom Robinson, her father beat her to her the point where, “her arms were bruised, and she showed me her neck. There were definite finger marks on her gullet-"(192). The trial in this book is about Mayella and Bob Ewell, two white people, claiming and arguing that Tom Robinson, a black person, raped Mayella Ewell. This trial is really important because at that time in the south, white people took advantage of black people and their kindness and thought they would take that or shut up just because they were black.
In Chapter 16, Tom Robinson's trial starts with the attendance of almost every one of the Maycomb citizens except Miss Maudie who doesn’t want to see a man’s fate decided in court. Jem explains the history of Mr. Raymond, a man who came to the trial, to Scout. Mr. Raymond has children and is involved with a black women. Their children are mixed races and have a difficult time befriending either race. This causes their whole family to be outcasts in the town.
The social norms of Maycomb made Mayella feel that her action was a kind of shame. To save herself from further abuse and shame, Mayella accuses Tom of rape. She believes that by doing this, she will gain sympathy and attention from the people of Maycomb, which all of the people ignored Mayella’s abuse from her dad. However, her lies are exposed in court. Mayella's lies also reveal how tragic the effects of silence and abuse are.
Mr. Heck Tate was the first witness to testify at the trial. He says that Bob Ewell told him that Mayella was being raped, so he rushed to the scene. When he arrived at the Ewell property, Mayella was badly injured, with bruises on her arms and face, and there were finger marks on her throat. He notes that most of injuries were on the right side of her face, meaning that the beater was likely left handed. He also notes that no doctors brought to examine Mayella despite her injuries.
