Patient care experience and the need for improvement toward patient-centered care is aligned with nursing excellence (Stimpfel, Sloane, McHugh, & Aiken, 2015). With the expectation of nursing excellence, the role of the nurse has expanded over the years with the current trend of focus on policy change. These policy changes are geared towards changes in patient care which will have a positive impact on patient outcomes. The nurse can become a leader in advocacy with the goal of raising awareness to health care concerns (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw & O'Grady, 2016). The purpose of this post is to describe two organizations which impact the practice of nursing and show the role these organizations play in nurse education and research. I will also align …show more content…
TJC is responsible for certifying that a facility or organization is providing safe care to patients. The purpose of TJC is to evaluate health care organizations and provide them with feedback which will, in turn, provide the organization with recommendations to provide improved safe, quality care at the best value for the patient (The Joint Commission [TJC], 2014). This impacts nursing practice since the recommendations TJC provides are generally matters which will alter they way the nurse performs, or documents care for a patient. This impact will affect the way the nurse, in the facility, is educated. If TJC recognizes a deficit in an area of the use of abbreviations, this will be brought the education depart. The education department will then devise a plan to roll out the information for allowed and proper use of abbreviations. In this situation, the educational impact is at the facility level. The purpose of the NLN is to support the education of nurses, provide testing services and grants for research, all with the purpose of achieving excellence in nursing (National League for Nursing [NLN], 2013). This organization impacts nursing by supporting nurse education in the development of nursing faculty. Additionally, they encourage research to advance nursing education through evidence-based teaching practices, and the instruction of nurses (NLN, 2013). The NLN role in Nursing Excellence is to influence public policy on nursing by providing backing for education with the expectation of excellence through growth, improvement, and understanding (NLN, 2013). I support mission of the NLN to promote and provide educational excellence standards. This support of nurse educators and expectation of continued education is needed to ensure the patient is receiving evidence-based
In my practice, we use NANDA, NIC, and NOC. Although in the electronic health records (EHR) it is referred to as individual plan of care (IPOC). We as nurses do not use the terms NANDA, NIC, and NOC often, but instead plan of care. Therefore, not everyone realizes that they are using standardized terminology when initiating and implementing a plan of care for the
Despite accepting advanced roles and responsibilities APRNs have often encountered various barriers in the delivery of effective health care based on the variability in the legislative requirements endorsed by various states. To overcome these barriers and improve the delivery of healthcare the Consensus Model for APRNs has been endorsed by 41 various nursing organizations focusing on defining the roles, population foci and implementation strategies across the nation (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2017). Creating a standard expectation regarding the practice of APRNs will help to foster more consistent, quality education APRN programs nationwide (Rounds, Zych, & Mallary,
Each morning patients came in for assessment and the treatment team developed or altered existing treatment protocols. I longed to be part of this team, working to stabilize each patient so they could return home to pursue their goals. The nurses stood out to me as the team members at ground zero in the unit, working directly with patients, and advocating for them in meetings. As a Nurse Practitioner, I will provide this same standard of holistic care to my patients, taking into consideration their biological, social, psychological and cultural needs while developing and implementing treatment decisions.
The Affordable Care Act has shifted focus on health and wellness of patient populations urging hospitals to do a community needs assessment and come up with a strategy to address these needs. Hospitals most often partner with community and professional organizations to address the health need (Stempniak, 2014). This is an example of how the four spheres are all interrelated. Nurses are at the heart of this movement, providing the necessary skills, experience and expertise to address the needs of the population being served (Shamian,
Ultimately, it will be important and a must for the nurse to act as a patient advocate at all times. This week’s lecture also states "to ensure capacity, which is necessary for a safe patient care environment, the professional nurse must be informed and advocate functioning at full capacity (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2014, week 7). Included in my professional role as a nurse is to be as up to date and informed on the patient or patients history and plan of care as I possibly can. I do so by following through with doctors’ orders, and asking doctors questions about the patient and their plan of care. I refer to and read through my assigned patients’ chart including their history and physical to gather the data necessary as well as changes and updates in the plan of care to provide the best quality care possible to improve patient outcomes.
As there continues to be an initiative to improve quality healthcare while simultaneously reducing costs, the importance of the nurse with advanced education in transforming healthcare delivery and healthcare policy will continue to grow. Opportunities for nurse managed health clinics, quality nursing research to improve evidence based practice, leadership of multidisciplinary health management teams and change agents in health policy and improved patient outcomes make the nurse with advanced education the “escape fire” in health care now and in the
Across the United States, it is common to find nurse-managed health centers that offer accessible health care services to the people. Nurse-managed health centers are a basic necessity in healthcare because they provide affordable and deserved care to the unprivileged population, while at the same time educating and training nurse practitioners. Usually, such health care institutions are led by an advanced practice nurse and as a result, need careful and efficient management and leadership skills and models. With the role that these centers serve, there is a need for an advocacy strategy for the nurse-managed health centers as a way of overseeing their effectiveness in service delivery grow. One of the factors that can improve management delivery
Nurses are critical for promoting health in the society. The profession is highly flexible, since they specialize in diverse operations in the medical field. Registered nurses, for instance, are responsible for the administration of medicine and inoculations to patients (American Nurses ' Association, 2000). Additionally, these professionals observe, record, and enlighten doctors of any changes in a patient’s health. Nurses interpret and evaluate diagnostic examinations to determine an individual’s condition, as well as making the necessary adjustments in patient treatment plans on their health progress.
The concept of nurses as advocates within the healthcare system has not changed but the techniques and practices associated with patient advocacy are continuously advancing; there is already an extensive range of existing nursing definitions of patient advocacy (Wellard, 2014). In general, the nurse in the healthcare team is the member with the greatest therapeutic communication, contact and relationship with patients; putting them in an optimal position to utilize their advocacy skills to facilitate contact between the patient and family members and other health care professionals and departments (University Alliance, 2015). Additionally, by pursuing a career in nursing it means fulfilling many roles, such as educator, caregiver, interpreter,
Like other specialty in nursing, a GCNS has a few key roles to perform. One of the key roles that a GCNS needs to fulfil is to mentor and clinically educate junior nursing staff with evidence-based practice in evaluating and using research finding to implement best practice of care with the patient and their families; and another one is to collaborate and participate in the interdisciplinary care of the aging population which is the most fundamental practice of a GCNS (Conley, Burket, Schumacher, Lyons, DeRosa, & Schirm, 20). A nursing profession requires a continuing professional development in order to maintain a high standard of care. These can be done by participating to an ongoing nursing education and professional development that will

In 2008, a blueprint for the Future of Nursing was created by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the institute of medicine. In the blueprint it was decided that nurses should set goals to receive higher education levels and training through an improved education system that promotes ongoing academic advancement. The reasoning for this was because of the advance in health problems, they believe that for incoming nurses to keep up they should have newer requirements. They also want for nurses to take on more of a leadership role, considering they have such a huge impact on the patients care. I agree with what they decided, because without learning the new material necessary, we wouldn't be able to care for our patients as well as we should
Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse. A nurse’s ability to give quality care to their patient is an important aspect to a patient’s life both now and in the future. As such, nurses must exhibit specific qualities in their practice in order to maintain the best standard of care for their patients. Given this, I believe that the standards of knowledge, advocacy, and self-awareness are foundational to the nursing practice and to a nurse’s capacity to provide quality patient care. Knowledge
They are able to connect, communicate and coordinate across multiple departments, professional opinions and voices, and the daily schedules of patients. Advocating and designing care with the patient and family is a true skills set and cultural attribute that adds tremendously to a culture of safety and patient – centeredness but requires the most able leadership to build these bridges across the many professionals engaged in care. Building this culture is a leadership challenge and there is no one in my experience better able to make these changes than nursing leaders ( Maureen Bisognano, 2009). Nurses should not just be at the bedside or within the nursing community but must be involved as leaders and decision – makers throughout the healthcare system. As Maureen Bisognano (2009) points out, the best nurses are accomplished envoys among different players and interests involved in direct patient care, which is a skill needed throughout organizations and businesses, not just in hospitals or
