Thomas Jefferson's Tension In The Barbary States

•“She was not even listening. She had gotten tired of listening. She knew, as we all knew, what the outcome would be. A white man had been killed during a robbery, and thought two of the robbers had been killed on the spot, one had been captured, and he, too, would have to die” (4). This quote is important because it allows me to understand that Jefferson has to die because he was the only person in the liquor store and was a black man.

During the war between France and Britain in 1793, the U.S. decided to remain neutral. However, the Jay’s Treaty is what infuriates the French government. After the U.S. and Britain signed the treaty and recognized Britain as the most favored nation trading status, the French became annoyed and seized U.S. merchant ships. They also refused to receive Charles Cotesworth Pinckney from George Washington as a minister to France. After John Adams became president in 1797, he sends John Marshall and Elbridge Gerry along with Charles to restore peace from France.

The purchasing of the Louisiana Territory promoted Jefferson’s vision for the country because his plans for this nation depended on western expansion as well as access to the international markets for American farmer products. His vision was threatened when France gained control of Louisiana. Napoleon threatened to block American access to the New Orleans port. Napoleon, for a number of reasons, most to do with money, offered the Louisiana territory to the US for a minimal amount. The US now owning the Louisiana territory more than doubled its size overall.

Thomas Jefferson was born in Shadwell, Virginia, April 13th, 1743. He died July 4th, 1826 in Monticello near Charlottesville. During this time Thomas Jefferson was voted U.S Vice President, U.S. Governor, Government Official, Diplomat and of course U.S. President. He attended College of William and Mary. Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President of the United States.

When Jefferson was elected, he described his election as a revolution, and a major change from John Adam’s presidency to Jefferson’s was the transition from a federalist nation to a democratic- republican. Jefferson and his secretary of the treasury Albert Gallatin rejected the federalist’s idea that a national bank would strengthen the government by giving creditors a stake in its benefits, while John Adams and his federalist party believed in the national bank. They also induced Congress to repeal most internal taxes, and slashed expenditures by closing some embassies overseas and reducing the army. However, the navy was ordered to act upon pirates of North Africa in 1801. Jefferson calculated that going to war would be cheaper than paying

The British are taking American ships and crewmen. If this non-sense doesn’t stop, I’m not going to be able to send my merchandise abroad. Why doesn’t our navy resist these attacks! I read in the Boston Times that the British tried taking crewmen from the Chesapeake. Why isn’t Jefferson doing anything to prevent this!

Here we stand mourning the loss of a good person, Tomas Jefferson. He died on July 4th, 1826, of unknown causes and was expected. But his health has decreased since 1818, when he visited Warm Springs. He first had bowel problems, then problems with his legs and deafness. Jefferson got married to Martha Skelton and had 6 children.

This “wall of separation” was meant to keep the country from having an official religion, if there were to be a declared religion, the country may have been even more oppressive towards people of certain religions. Jefferson wrote that this wall would keep everyone’s freedoms intact, thus the country “building a wall of separation between church and state”. (Jefferson’s Wall of Separation). Some of Daniel Dreisbach’s beliefs and arguments are supporting Jeffersson, while he also believes that Jefferson’s beliefs contradicts the Bill of Rights.

The Age of Enlightenment or Age of reason was a developmental philosopher movement in the 17th –century. The movement highlighted reason and individualism rather than tradition. Its purpose was to challenge the traditional rituals and open minds to a new way of thinking and rationalizing. Contrary to what some people may think these ideas, theories and new way of thinking are still relevant in today’s society. These men had a profound impact on government and their ideas helped shape the government into what it is today.

Without a doubt Thomas Jefferson’s explanation of how to break the law was a very insightful intake on how to properly break the law when the opportunity presents itself. When injustice is present it's the duty of man to stand up for their beliefs and fight for their rights. In order to combat the injustice of the British, Jefferson provided a list of grievances to the American citizens and told Americans that, it was their duty to break the law after asking for a peaceful compromise from the British. Jefferson specifically wrote, “When in course of human events , it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of Earth , the separate and equal station

Thomas Jefferson, born in Virginia in 1743, began his early political life in 1769 when he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. He then later was elected a legislator for Virginia from 1776 until 1779. “During Jefferson’s time as a legislator he gained beneficial knowledge on the leadership characteristics needed to direct a country through a reconstruction era.” Although Jefferson was unable to keep the British from invading Virginia, he did successfully guide the state through the American Revolution. Jefferson served as Vice President to John Adams. As his time as Vice President, he took a stand against the Alien and Sedition Acts.

Thomas Jefferson’s works and ideas laid the foundation for several key aspects on the limits of the United States government, the idea of separation of church and state, and the importance of personal rights. Jefferson wrote many influential pieces of literature which pushed the concept of having limited government power. Jefferson wanted America not to be like the European monarchies that fell due to religious strife, so he emphasized a secular government. Jefferson, following closely with the ideas of John Locke, stressed the importance of the protection of individual rights against the government. Thomas Jefferson believed that a government should have limitations.

He even aimed and tried to establish a more perfect union by sending his men to fight off the Barbary pirates who were harassing the U.S commerce. ”He also sent a naval squadron to fight the Barbary pirates, who were harassing American commerce in the Mediterranean” (Frank Freidel). Purchasing the Louisiana Territory, displayed Jefferson expanding America into a better union. “At more than 820,000 square miles, the acquisition (which included lands extending between the Mississippi River and Rocky Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico to present-day Canada) effectively doubled the size of the United States” (History.com - Thomas Jefferson). The only thing Jefferson lacked was being fair to all, or establishing justice.

Jefferson’s dilemma in the Louisiana Purchase In April of 1803 Thomas Jefferson was faced with many moral dilemmas in the process of buying the Louisiana territory. Though the price for the territory was beyond generous, Jefferson felt that by purchasing the territory he would be going against his beliefs that the constitution should be followed word for word. The constitution said nothing of the president having the power to purchase land from another government, or to use money of the states for the same purpose (“the moral dilemma”). Another problem was once the land was purchased, there was a fear that it could have been a waste since they had no way to know the layout of the land, and what it would be useful for.
