Question 2: You are using an intervention called "Think Your Drink" to reduce added sugar consumption from beverages in an intervention for older adults. You want to see if your intervention is effective. What dietary assessment method will you choose to evaluate the effectiveness of this program and, if relevant, what instrument. Please discuss the strengths and limitations of your method and, if relevant, instrument in terms of validity and reliability as well as the subject burden and cost for evaluation. Answer: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention called "Think Your Drink” to reduce the added sugar consumption in older adults. Dietary assessment method use – Multiple 24-hour dietary recalls, at baseline, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months for experimental and control group. Changes in the …show more content…
b) What are the differences between an experimental, quasi-experimental, non-experimental and descriptive design? Experimental research design: In the experimental designs participants are randomly allocated to independent variable, which means researchers can manipulate the independent variable and assess the outcome. The experimental design which evaluates the cause and effect relationship and it can perform in lab and real life conditions with one group treated as a experiment and other group is placebo. The experimental designs are highly reliable and controlled, but it needs ethical approval from government. A Quasi-Experimental Design: In the Quasi experimental design, researcher doesn’t manipulate independent variable and also not assign the groups. It seeks to evaluate casual impact of intervention on its target population. In the quasi experimental design the subject are already part of a group based on pre-existing conditions (Non-random assignment) and participants are not blinded, causing low internal validity. Non-Experimental
1. Describe the study design (is it correlational, experimental, survey research, etc.). The study is Level 3, experimental. The participants are within subject design experiences because since the subjects were divided into two groups by gender.
Will you be using a between-subjects or within-subjects design? If you have more than one IV, you need to answer this question separately for each IV. I will be using within subjects design. The participants will be given the same treatment during the experiment.
investigating the difference in results of using two different types of plant food Ans: identification of Relationship because trying to identify difference between two types of food. h. calculating the mean score on a final exam for a class of 100 students Ans: data reduction because trying to reduce everything and shows meaningful part. i. studying whether exposure to a certain type of chemical results in more frequent cancer diagnoses Ans: Inference because it tries to conclude how certain types of chemical results in more frequent cancer diagnoses. 3. Tell which type of sampling is used (random, cluster, systematic, convenience, and stratified and give clear reasons to support your answer.
Outcome Measurements Measuring outcomes is a vital element proceeding evidence-based intervention measures because it ensures that the intended purpose of the interventions has been met. To certain that a program is effective requires evaluation, which is supported by the strength and reliability of the proposed intervention. The goal of implementing the intervention: The Beat diabetes and new leaf for AA programs aimed at reducing the incidence rate of diabetes as indicators of positive outcomes that the preventive measures are effective (Ricci-Cabello, et. al., 2013). The principal evaluation measures for AA at risk for T2DM with the new leaf intervention program will be an improvement of hemoglobin (Hg) A.1c measure (below 6.5%),
The importance of preventing and managing chronic diseases, which include renal failure and cardiovascular diseases, along with their risk factors are emphasized by the Department of Chronic Disease and Health Promotion of the World Health Organization (Desroches, Lapointe, Ratté, Gravel, Légaré, & Turcotte, 2013). However, there is evidence in literature showing a gap of knowledge in the kinds of educational interventions being considered as most effective in compliance to dietary regimen. The study by Desroches et al., 2013 states that there are limitations to their study including that being a short duration, low quality and adherence measures varied widely (Desroches et al., 2013) Hence, these limitations assisted in the generation of research questions, which are: 1) Which educational interventions being used show reliability in compliance or adherence to dietary regimen; 2) What are the detrimental factors contributing to low compliance to dietary regimen among patients with ESRD and CHF; and 3) Can a study performed in a longer length of time produce a higher rate of compliance to dietary regimen among patients with ESRD and
Every 5 years since 1980, a new edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans has been published. The primary goal is to make recommendations about the components of a healthy and nutritionally adequate diet to help promote good health and prevent chronic disease for current and future generations. About half of all American adults have one or more preventable chronic diseases, and about two thirds of US adults are overweight or obese. These conditions have been highly prevalent for more than two decades. Poor dietary patterns, over consumption of calories, and physical inactivity directly contribute to these disorders.
When James Lind performed his experiment, he chose the six remedies with an intention to not have an effect of the variances. He selected 12 men from the ship who suffered scurvy. He divided those 12 men into pairs and provided supplements to their basic diet for two weeks. Based upon the work of Ronald Fisher, why are the following principles of Experimental design important? Comparison: The purpose of comparison is to make sure
Give details so I know you understand the type of research design. a. The research design that seems best fit would be an experimental
Background: In 2007, the Rio Grande Valley area doctors and business leaders formed an association called as the Rio Grande Valley Association of Diabetes (RGVAD) which aims to provide the awareness on diabetes to the residents from Hidalgo County. RGVAD provides programs and services that focus specifically for the areas in Hidalgo County and guarantees that all grants created by this association are used by the people or residents of the Rio Grande Valley region. In recent years, Diabetes has affect approximately 18 million people which is about 9% of the population in the United States. In addition, 13 million people have diabetes and which is unknown to people.
Action Plan Summary For module two my action plan to reach my goal of reducing my chance of developing diabetes by reducing the amount of sugar I consumed was to drink nothing but 2 liters of water at least 5 times a week, as well as cutting down on sugary snacks in my diet. For module three, my action plan to reach my goal of gaining 5 pounds in three months was to perform strength training at least 3 days a week doing routines for different muscle groups each day. I have been going through with my plan, but I have only managed to put on 3 pounds of muscle in the last 2 months. Although I am a little behind on my progress towards my goal, I plan to keep going forward and accomplish as much as I can. For module four, my action plan was to track to food I eat every week and to make sure what I am consuming meets the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
The three descriptive research methods that I will discuss are Naturalistic Observation, Survey, and Case Study. Naturalistic Observation is a research method in which people or animals are observed in their natural habitat without any controls or variables. This type of research method may be conducted if you want to see how people truly act without being watched. For example, this research method may be used to determine who are healthier shoppers, men or women? The researcher would go to a food store and take count throughout the day of how many men and women he finds in the fruit and vegetable isles, and how many he find in the snack isles.
It’s a quantitative method that is specifically used in psychology researches and it examines whether two variables such as events, behaviuors, properties, and characteristics are casually related. In other words, it is a scientific and systematic approach to research, in which the researcher can manipulate and control the variables i,e an independent variable is manipulated and the dependent variable is measured and it could be called a true experiment. The main advantage of this method is that it allows us to determine and regulate cause and effect, and further it allows us to control the effects of extraneous variables. Experimental method involves some kind of measurement and a mathematical calculation is frequently involved.
College Students’ Exposure to Alcohol Drinking Drinking alcoholic beverages among college students is widely common nowadays in this generation. Several reasons can be recognized why students drink alcohol. According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Inc, (2016), improving self-confidence, altering own identity (to adapt), curiosity, lack of parental advice, problems of daily living, running away from family dilemma, experiencing academic difficulty and other mental-related problems drive the teenagers to drink alcohol. Considering the reasons stated above, these can be some of the many ways how young people manage with their personal, emotional and social problems that they are experiencing.
Consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, which include soft drinks, fruit drinks, ice tea, energy and vitamin water drinks across the globe. Regular consumption of sugary sweetened beverages have been associated with weight gain, obesity and diabetes. The role of sugary sweetened beverages in the development of related chronic metabole diseases such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, has not been quantitatively reviewed . How is consuming sugary beverages harmful to the body ?
In quantitative research, variables are identified and defined, and then relevant data is collected from study participants. A strength of this type of research is that the data is in numeric form, making it easier to interpret. It also studies the relationship between independent and dependent variables and can address questions such as does a relationship between variables exist, what is the direction of the relationship, how strong is the relationship between the variables, and what is the nature of the relationship. To be able to discover and answer the cause-and-effect relationship is a strength of quantitative research. Lastly, in quantitative research, the study can either be experimental or nonexperimental, meaning clinical trial or observational study, allowing for different types of research studies to be conducted.
