Insomnia In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare shows the consciences of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth and how each one suffers when sleep is altered by their evil acts. This intricate use of sleep deprivation was used to indicate future turmoil. Sleep is a word that many associate with rest and being able to function. However, when used throughout Macbeth, it becomes a reflection of inner unrest. Many believe that Macbeth’s insomnia is closely related to the guilt he begins to carry throughout the play, and his guilt plays a big part in causing that insomnia or disturbed sleep of his. Macbeth is a slave to his insomnia. Lady Macbeth is also very disturbed and walks around in her sleep, trying to rub away the traces of her crime. In William Shakespeare’s play, The Tragedy of Macbeth, the character of Macbeth is easily influenced by his wife and starts to spiral in his attempt to gain ambition. This is evident as he begins to behave in unexpected ways, seeing things, and negative thinking. This actively demonstrates that he is easily capable of changing drastically throughout this play by going through traumatic situations including his wife that calls him a coward if wasn’t be able to do so. In judgment of his character he would be diagnosed with schizophrenia for multipipe reasons. As being seen, Macbeth exhibits symptoms of schizophrenia to include: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking, and negative thoughts.
Macbeth’s mind into committing heinous crimes. And as time continues Macbeth gives up on caring. It is almost like he forgets to care. Killing innocents by the end of the story did not phase him one bit. While Macbeth is forgetting to care you see Lady Macbeth fill up with guilt, that she can't bare anymore.

Choices are what become us, and because of the multitudinous choices made throughout this play, a man lost everything he once was on his path to power. Macbeth’s descent into madness and insanity can be narrowed down to a few things, such as people and it could’ve been the Witches, Lady Macbeth, or even Macbeth himself. The Witches in Macbeth were the very ones who started the whole downward spiral that swept up Macbeth. With their predictions of his future, they implanted illusions that plagued his mind with poisonous thoughts of grandeur.
Macbeth talks about the darkness of his plan to murder, and he personifies nature as a living creature that is dead and all living things are in deep sleep. Furthermore, Macbeth proclaims that dreams are wicked and that they abuse sleep. This can be interpreted as the supernatural forces are guiding his dream of being successful and his ambition leads him to kill King Duncan in his sleep. Even though Macbeth recognizes all his flaws and sins by following the wrong path, he talks about the darkness of his crime and the night. It does not affect him yet it proves that the darkness of Macbeth’s desire and insanity contributes to his downfall.
As a result of her inability to escape the nightmare of immense guilt in sleeping or in wakefulness, Lady Macbeth crosses into the state of eternal sleep, death. In conclusion, William Shakespeare’s Macbeth demonstrates that a guilty conscience is a mind-probing enemy that can strike quietly and become a deadly, overpowering force that can subdue anyone with remorse. Through Lady Macbeth’s character transformation, the effects of a guilty conscience can thoroughly be seen. Macbeth returns after killing Duncan and the guards, grief stricken and afraid. He tells his wife that sleep itself has been murdered and that nobody is immune his treachery (5.1.44). Macbeth’s crime is intensified by the act of murder being done at night and to sleeping rather than awake guards. The moment of guilt that Macbeth felt for his actions represents the hidden innocence behind the crimes.

After Macbeth murders Duncan, he begins to go insane and claim that he can no longer sleep. “Methought I heard a voice cry, ‘Sleep no more! / Macbeth does murder sleep’ . . . ‘Macbeth shall sleep no more’”
